The Almond Model

Rachel the Great's picture
Tutorials Rachel the Great - Friday, January 20, 2006 - 22:03
The almond model is great for doing older, eviler, or more Asian characters as it essentially creates narrower eyes. A lot of so-called Amerimanga artists (you know who you are) use this method, which is really too bad, as it is not the norm in manga. Most manga artists structure their eyes with the box model or the Naoko Takeuchi method which results in a much more flexible eye, capable of showing more emotion. Alas, American artists think that a few poorly drawn kimono and some of these eyes are all it takes to create "anime inspired" comics. I spit on those people for their misuse of technique and terminology. Thou art shunned. So, aspiring manga artist, please do not over-use this technique, okay? Basic almond shape.

Step 1

Draw a nice almond or narrow oval shape.

Note the cat-like eyelashes.

Step 2

Add your lashes to the upper lid and lower outer corner. Notice how they join (unlike in the other models where there is a break between the upper and lower lashes).

The circle.

Step 3

Add a circle to become the eyeball. Optional: Erase the place where the lower lashes join the lower lid.

Ooh la la!

Step 4

Black in the lashes, add a crease above the upper lid, add shines and pupil to the eyeball, and sketch on some wispy lashes on the lower lid.

Actually, I don't do eyes

Caramel; Wednesday, June 14, 2006 - 18:47

Actually, I don't do eyes the almond way, but wouldn't hurt to try!

Oh, and I'm American....

It's not always good to

Barabara; Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 17:18

It's not always good to follow the crowd. Many talanted JAPANESE manga artists use varitations of this this style. The eyebrowls, or other facial movements, can show the same emotion, combined with the eyes, as a large box eye.

However, the tutorial was really good. ^^

Doesn't hurt to try... like they say, you should mimic all styles before developing your own... or something.

A gun is not a weapon, it's a tool, like a butcher knife, or a harpoon, or... or... and alligator. You just need more education on the subject.

would'nt hurt to try using

would'nt hurt to try using this. I tend to do a cross between realistic eyes and manga eyes.

Personal Style

kristenm; Saturday, November 3, 2007 - 05:24

This is a great tutorial on these eyes; However, I think that every artist should develop their own style -- Not just copy "traditional" art styles. If we had only copycats, where would we ever get new beautiful art from?

You're right, Kristenm. This

Anime Punk Joey; Saturday, November 3, 2007 - 08:07

You're right, Kristenm. This tutorial is only here to show people how to draw an eye in one particular style; however, you can't draw an eye in any style, old or new, until you know how to draw it somehow. ;)

I do agree, luckily I often find that even when I am using tutorials I end up drawing with my own personal style.
