Colorado Ammendment 48: bad for us all

Story here

Quote:
A proposal to define a fertilized human egg as a person will land on Colorado's ballot this November, marking the first time that the question of when life begins will go before voters anywhere in the nation.

In other words, it not only outlaws abortion, but stem cell research as well, plus a whole host of other things.

Quote:
And the amendment carries broader implications, critics say, such as limiting medical research involving embryos, inviting intrusive government oversight of pregnancies, and banning certain contraception, including the morning-after pill and the intrauterine device, or IUD.

The RNC

The republican national convention, or more accurately the protests outside the republican national convention, showed the whole political spectrum in this nation. There were numerous notable liberal anti-war protests, replete with jeering republican delegates; there were black-clad and well-organized anarchists fighting the brutality of the riot police, who attacked civilians, protesters, children, and reporters with potentially lethal rubber bullets, tear gas, and the ever-present batons. My familiarity with these protests, having not actually been there, comes from my religious study of reports coming out from corporate media sources, www.infoshop.org , and the twin cities indymedia reports coming out of the besieged city. These reports largely focused on my comrades, the anarchists. Some of the stories I'm about to tell may shock and disturb you, but they all come from trusted sources that have proven their veracity to me time and time again.

Let's all have a moment of silence today, during which we can:

Pray (or hope for the best) for the families who suffered losses on this day 7 years ago.

Be grateful for the well-being our own loved ones.

Contemplate the state of our world.

Recognize what our country has become since 9/11.

Palin: Are we really supposed to fall for that?

Unfortunately, it's true:

Just like some people are only voting for McCain because he's Republican (even though they hate him), just like some black people are voting for Obama just because he's black, McCain's team is hoping that having a young, one-time beauty pageant winning pair of boobs is going to make him a more attractice candidate.

Yes, there are a lot of feminists who feel Hilary was treated unfairly and really want to see a woman get elected. And I'm sure that the few of them who care more about that than actual politics will probably vote for her.

I cannot see how McCain could have possibly picked another old white man to be his vice president and expected to have any chance of exciting voters to side with him.

Yet another reason to hate McCain

Story here

Quote:
WASHINGTON - Days after he cracked that being rich in the U.S. meant earning at least $5 million a year, Republican presidential candidate John McCain acknowledged that he wasn't sure how many houses he and his wealthy wife actually own.

You can't remember how many houses you own? Then how are we going to rely on your memory when it comes to more important stuff like national defense? Good gravy, this guy is turning into George W. Bush!

Quote:
Later, the McCain campaign told Politico that McCain and his wife, Cindy, have at least four in three states — Arizona, California and Virginia. Newsweek recently estimated the two owned at least seven properties.

Okay, picture this: you've been found guilty of misappropriating $20,000 in funds from a predominantly minority college. You have kidney cancer and have to use a wheelchar. Since it's your first conviction, the judge decides to cut you a break: 30 days jail time or publicly apologize for misappropriating the funds. What do you do?

Quote:
DALLAS -- A former Dallas City Council member has chosen to serve a month in prison over apologizing and admitting publicly that he embezzled public funds.

This guy is not really that bright, is he?

Quote:
U.S. Congressional candidate Tony Zirkle is facing criticism from one of his primary opponents, and a host of people on the Internet, for speaking at an event over the weekend that celebrated Adolf Hitler's birthday.

Zirkle confirmed to The News-Dispatch on Monday he spoke Sunday in Chicago at a meeting of the Nationalist Socialist Workers Party, whose symbol is a swastika.

China may have to worry about clouds of smog and black soot due to its lax environmental policies and large scale adoption of inefficient partial-combustion obsolete technologies, but one thing it won't have to worry about at the 2008 Beijing Olympics this August is rain – that is if everything goes according to plan.

So everyone will get to breathe the most polluted air in the world without any interruptions. [/sarcasm]

Female referee removed from game... because of her gender.

Story here

Quote:
Just minutes before she was scheduled to referee a boy's varsity basketball game at St. Mary's Academy, Michelle Campbell was told she would not be allowed to work the game because she is a woman.

Just how does being a woman impair her ability to be a ref?

Quote:
St. Mary's Academy, near Topeka, Kan., is a controversial religious school that follows older Roman Catholic laws, but many argue that religious beliefs does not give the school the right to discriminate.

I agree with that. Cosmically speaking, isolating males from females is a very bad thing to do.

Quote:
RICHMOND, Va. - A judge who ordered a woman to drop her pants and decided a custody dispute by flipping a coin was removed from the bench by the Virginia Supreme Court on Friday. The decision against Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Judge James Michael Shull of Gate City was unanimous.

APEC and the right to protest

So I don't know how many of you have heard, but good ol' George Bush and 20 other world leaders have gathered in Sydney to talk about 'international issues'. As far as the Prime Minister tells us, this is mostly security and technology agreements, with global warming coming a flimsy third.
Because of the nature of the summit there is MASSIVE security, including a huge police presence and resulting in most of Sydney being put behind a big wall (literally...it goes for 5 km and is 3 metres high).
There's also a lot of protesting...and a group of comedians famous for their semi-legal pranks joined in and made national news.
