Misery

Stephen King is arguably the most popular novelist in the history of American fiction. He owes his fans a love letter. "Misery" is it.

Paul Sheldon, author of a best selling series of historical romances, wakes up one winter day in a strange place, a secluded farmhouse in Colorado. He wakes up to unspeakable pain (a dislocated pelvis, a crashed knee, two shattered legs) and to a bizarre greeting from the woman who has saved his life: "I'm your number one fan!"

Annie Wilkes is a huge ex-nurse, handy with controlled substances and other instruments of abuse, including an axe and a blowtorch. A dangerous psychotic with a "Romper Room" sense of good and bad, fair and unfair, Annie Wilkes may be Stephen King's most terrifying creation. It's not fair, for example, that her favorite character in the world, Misery Chastain, has been killed by her creator, as Annie discovers when Paul's latest novel comes out in paperback. And it's not good that her favorite writer has been a Don't-Bee and written a different kind of novel, a nasty novel, the kind of novel he always wanted to write, the only copy of which now lies in Annie's angry hands.

VAMPIRE KISSES 2: KISSING COFFINS

Kissing Coffins by Ellen Schreiber is the second in her series Vampire Kisses. As the name may imply, this young adult novel involves spooky castles, cemeteries, a Goth club, and predictably, Vampires.
Our heroine Raven is a teenage Goth girl with a dilemma: she’s in love with a Vampire. The story begins with the disappearance of said Vampire boyfriend, Alexander Sterling. Raven is determined to find Alexander, and she is quite crafty in her ambition. The story takes her from her hometown “Dullsville” to “Hipsterville” where her hippy actress aunt lives. When she gets close to finding her love, she must contemplate a life undead in order to save herself from the mysterious villain Jagger.

Vampire Kisses 1

In her small town, dubbed "Dullsville," sixteen-year-old Raven -- a vampire-crazed goth-girl -- is an outcast. But not for long... The intriguing and rumored-to-be haunted mansion on top of Benson Hill has stood vacant and boarded-up for years. That is, until its mysteriously strange new occupants move in. Who are these creepy people -- especially the handsome, dark, and elusive Alexander Sterling? Or rather, what are they? Could the town prattle actually ring true? Are they vampires? Raven, who secretly covets a vampire kiss, both at the risk of her own mortality and Alexander's loving trust, is dying to uncover the truth. Ellen Schreiber's spooky and stirring romance tells the story of two outsiders who fall in love in a town where conformity reigns, and ends with a shocking surprise.

A Book Review

When Nicholas Nickleby is left penniless after his father's death, he appeals to his wealthy uncle to help him find work and to protect his mother and sister. But Ralph Nickleby proves to be hard-hearted and unsscrupulous, and Nicholas finds himself forced to make his own way in the world. His adventures gave Dickens the opportunity to portray an extraordinary gallery of rogues and eccentrics:Wackford Squeers, the tyranical headmaster of Dotheboys Hall, a school for unwanted boys; the slow-witted orphan Smike, rescued by Nicholas; and thegloriously theatrical Mr and Mrs Crummies and their daughter, the 'infant phenominon'.

Nineteen Eighty-Four: A Critical Review

Nineteen Eighty-Four takes place in what is believed to be by the protagonist, Winston Smith, the year 1984 in Oceania’s Air Strip One, present day London, England. Winston lived in a time when one supreme party ruled over the nation of Oceania. The Party had three slogans: “Freedom is slavery. War is peace. Ignorance is strength.” Unquestioning obedience and reverence to the Party was the norm, and the slightest hint of intentions to deviate was answered by swift eradication courtesy of the Thought Police. Winston, harboring vague memories of the days before the Party, wondered (a crime in itself) if life had been better before the reign of “Big Brother.” He ultimately rebelled against the Party by allowing himself to fall in love with Julia, his silently rebellious co-worker and admirer.
