Now God is a gansta...(?)

Story here

Basically, the DISD ordered a young woman that wore a rosary to school to remove it because they consider it a gang symbol.

I've never heard of this. Is this for real? If not, why are they doing this?

Apparently, showing one's religion is not acceptable anymore. =\

"Because I want to live in an ivory tower just like Republicans in America do!" Isn't it nice to know that sexism is still alive, well, and thriving in other parts of the world?

Man lodges complaint against bilingual sign

Quote:
DALLAS -- The marquee in front of an east Dallas elementary school has one nearby resident complaining. Half of the sign at Alex Sanger Elementary School is in Spanish, and the homeowner believes that is bad for the Forest Hills neighborhood.

Dear, I think our new neighbors might be... ETHNIC!! (for all you Dead Milkmen fans.)

Quote:
Most schools have a marquee in front of the school to inform parents of the latest school news. At Sanger elementary, one side indicates the school made the Exemplary list in English while the other side has the same message in Spanish.

Teacher fired for performing magic trick in class

Quote:
Well, another Pasco County substitute teacher's job is on the line, but this time it's because of a magic trick.

The charge from the school district — Wizardry!

Substitute teacher Jim Piculas does a 30-second magic trick where a toothpick disappears then reappears.

Okay, how exactly is this so traumatic to kids? What he was doing was trying to make the learning experience entertaining. Several studies* have shown that when the student enjoys learning, they learn and retain more.

Ignorance about sex rampant in Florida

Story here

Quote:
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Florida teens who believe drinking a cap of bleach will prevent HIV and a shot of Mountain Dew will stop pregnancy have prompted lawmakers to push for an overhaul of sex education in the state.

Are we really making kids this bad?

I guess drinking a cap of bleach could prevent HIV... but it also has the effect of being fatal.

I've heard in some third world countries, soft drinks are used after sex to prevent pregnancy. Since many are based on carbonated water (a weak acid) it can act as a contraceptive. However, it also has some nasty side effects as well.

Warning: this story has a few things that may make some of the more sensitive people upset.

Quote:

TAMPA - Patricia Elalem said she couldn't believe her daughter's kneecap dislocated after what at first seemed like a minor injury.

Even more troubling to Elalem is what might have caused the injury to worsen. Elalem says a nurse at Walker Middle School in Odessa [FL] took away 13-year-old Amber's crutches last month, forcing the girl to walk in pain.

Yes, even though there were a few quick exams the school nurse could have done to determine whether or not she needed crutches, the nurse still took away her crutches.

Quote:
An eighth-grade honors student who was suspended for a day, barred from attending an honors dinner and stripped of his title as class vice president after he was caught with contraband candy in school will get his student council post back, school officials said.

He buys candy at school from a classmate and gets suspended for it? In most schools, they have students selling candy. Apparently, someone didn't listen to the Supreme Court when it ruled in the 1960's that "Students do not shed their first amendment rights at the schoolhouse gate."

Your time online may get limited soon

Story here

Due to the amount of traffic on the internet, ISPs are now considering limiting the amount of time we spend online.

Quote:
Now, Internet service providers are starting to limit the availability of dishes that are popular with the big eaters (controlling traffic). They're also considering telling us to stick to two helpings per person (limiting monthly downloads). They might end up doing both.

If this trend continues, you will be limited to so many hours online per month and only able to download so much. Does this make you angry? It does me. For starters, how are you going to enforce this on businesses? Will our public libraries only have internet access for a few hours each month, clogging up already long lines in some places?

"Real Manga"

My friends and I have worked really hard on this zine, displaying our artwork and comics. We self published and distributed it throughout the school and quite frankly I was really proud of our accommplishment. I mean it was really neat to have a goal reached.

Now a friend of mine claims that we had no manga in our zine despite the numerous comics in the japanese style. Now I always thought manga just meant comics in japanese; and manga didn't have to be in graphic novel format as long as it was in the japanese style. Of course he goes saying we shouldn't call it a "manga magazine" because none of the comics exceed 20 pages.

Males, the silent victims of PC

Have you always noticed that guys suffer thanks to political correctness? Take for example cancer, women get breast cancer. Millions upon millions of dollars go toward pointless (pointless as cancer isn't curable, people just refuse to realise that) research for breast cancer. There's heaps of official days besides national breast cancer day that while officially raise money for all cancer sufferers most procedes go to breast cancer. Meanwhile more men are dying of prostate cancer which is harder and much more "uncomfortable" to test for (women get to feel they're breast for a few minutes every now and then, men have to have a doctor put their hand up his rear at least once a year).

Can the creators unite?

http://tammy212.livejournal.com/28296.html

On Tamora Pierce’s blog (she does YA books and did a comic for Marvel), talks about the frustration of dealing with Marvel and DC and how those 2 companies show a disrespect to female writers. Reading her post, I thought about how what she was saying applied to the young women of Mangapunk who are trying to make comics, but it became very clear to me that there is a clear generation gap in female creators. There’s the Wonder Woman on one side and Fruits Basket on the other. Yes there is crossover to a point (better than men for sure), but I’d also argue that a lot of women aren’t aware of their comic choices.
