So yeah, here's my Flikr account - The photos from the Museum of Science and Industry are the most recent - they were taken over winter break.

MP closing? (Now with question mark because I forgot to add it! Sorry.)

I'm thinking about closing MangaPunk and starting a site that just features general information, links and news to comicking info. I no longer feel a deep connection to Japanese comics and animation. I don't even call my comics manga anymore.

Without Doub managing reviews and with my time sucked up by the weeklies, there isn't much left to run this place, either. I own the domain name and a registered trademark, and I am determined to hang onto them, even to have the domain forwarded to the new site.

I'm just not sure what to do with this anymore. It's been nigh on a year since we switch

The Rules (Read or die!)

Manga Punk loves freedom of speech and encourages you to use it. However, we also encourage you to keep in mind a few things to help fight Site Rot.

What is Site Rot?
Sometimes, you start visiting a great site where everyone is cool and knowledgeable and helpful. Then, as the site becomes more popular as the word of its awesomeness spreads, some people start coming who do things that make the site less interesting and helpful. The forums start going off topic, flame wars break out, and in general, all those cool, awesome helpful people desert the site for one that is less derelict, taking their friends with them, and the once mighty and promising site degenerates into a mere pseudo-chatroom, rife with trolls, which is of no help to anyone.

What the new Manga Punk is all about and how you can help shape it.

So, MP is up. We don't want be elitist like *some* communities, and yet we still want to attract comickers and manga lovers of all ages. This should be the birthplace of Amerimanga and the cradle of the future of comics.

I have already spoken with Joey about starting the web's biggest, most comprehensive guide to comicking right here on this site. We have the power and modules to do it, and I think it would help bring people to us who need that information. No more buying crappy books that don't tell you much at Walden!

What else?

My very first Convention....

Well I got to go to Wizard World in Arlington Texas yesterday... Needless to say after my dad took me there, as I read the map, I realize I would've gotten lost... But that's beside the point.. When I got there, I felt like I was going to explode with excitement, and I almost went in the wrong entrance when I got there. But I saw stands for various comic book stores like Lone Star, and Titan, but no Keith, or Zeus. And the artist Alley was a sinch tot find, but I couldn't locate the two artists I was looking for,( Yes Trunx, and David Doub I mean you.) And I also learned that Artists who work for Marvel, DC, Image, and Various other Comic-book companies were there, and I could've talked to them about being hired, as evident to the various artists I noticed walking about carrying portfolios, while I carried my stuff in a bookbag... What does this mean? I need to set up a portfolio is what it means. But there were alot of freelance artists there, many I couldn't afford on my current salary... I also ran into Frank Cho, and Sonny Strait while I was there, and felt humbled while appearing before their tables. It's actually quite a tale of how I came across Strait, and Cho too...

Is fan fiction about instant gratification?

I think I’ve mentioned before I don’t get fan fiction (and not in a negative way, just don’t get it) but then I saw this comment listed below. Is that a big appeal to fan fiction that there’s a big community to plug into and interact with where the only admission is a love for the characters and ideas? I know there’s no one answer on why people fan fic, but does the following make sense?

Taken from -
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/chicks-on-anime/2008-10-14/2

"Question: ....can I ask you a somewhat controversial question about fan fiction? You always hear a lot of haters saying, “Well, if you're such a good writer, why don't you write your own stories?” What is your response to that?

The Frankenstein Influence Hath struck me

*Listening to The Original Version Of Frankenstein by Edgar White*( I say original because I've been listening to a cover for Frankenstein by Marcus Miller)

Anyway... In listening to Marcus Miller's cover for Edgar White's Frankenstein on my ipod last week, I started thinking about a "Frankenstein" character I developed when I was in the eighth grade based off of Victor Von Gerdenheim from DarkStalkers.

Originally he was alot like Victor, he manipulated electricity that was channeled through his body, and had superhuman strength, but unlike Victor, this character was very articulate when speaking, and he was a villain.(And he had a name, I just can't remember what it was. :P ) However in listening to "frankenstein" on my ipod I started to recall this character he started to become somewhat like the Hulk in these mental scenarios of mine as I thought about the Incredible Hulk and Red Hulk, and in how I also recalled how I learned that the Hulk himself was inspired by Frankenstein.(Of which I just recently learned that the other source of inspiration was Jekyll and Hyde.) And as this new renovation of this old concept came to life in my subconscious, he started to become more of a hero than a villain. And also I seemed to have given him a Hulk like origin that may be mixed with Solomon Grundy's origin in Justice League.

Writers differences. Need someone else's opinion

Hey everyone how ya been? Well my friend and I have been working on this manga for a while together, and we've come to a big crossroads.
And I know that one another are making good points, but neither is willing to budge from our opinions. So I'm going to ask you guys what you think.

Ok well we have these two rival characters and they both have some of the same abilities, and they both can fly, move really fast, and are super strong.
But both have more abilities and way different personalities and they excel in different aspects of their powers.
Well my partner thinks that one character should fly while the other should run. That way they don't have the same powers and the fight scenes can be more different, and that way e can figure new ways out to keep the fight going.

I've had an ephiphany (artistic wise)

Forgive me for not being on here for so long. I never felt myself worthy enough to be on here if I don't have any good material to show for it. But I realized what was giving me such a hard time with making comics. My style. For years I have been trying to draw in the style of anime and manga comics and could never make a cohesive panel. I end up making simple things like this.

http://furubafan3.deviantart.com/art/Toaster-s-adventures-2-80200721

When my usual "manga" art consisted of this.
http://furubafan3.deviantart.com/art/The-Dalles-Family-Portriat-93809222

I end up drawing pretty people who are static and don't do anything. Ugh I want to slap myself in the face for not realizing it sooner. Simple characters mean easier to manipulate easier to exaggerate features, to move! My self made "chibis" were simply little bodies with smiley faces. It was easier to change their expressions around and such...so why not combine the self taught anatomy from my anime drawings to the simple features of my stylized chibis?

I'm at that point again... >.<

*Listening to Indestructible by Disturbed*

First before I say anything, if this is not in the proper forum, would the overseers, and rulers of this site,(sorry to phrase it that way :p) please relocate it to that location... thanks! XD

Anyway... After listening to This for the fourth or fifth time, I became so excited by the scenarios in my mind that I wanted to immediately start bringing these scenarios to life through animation... I'm give it a shot on aniboom.com, but if anyone knows of any other sites I can go to for animation, please lemme know.

Fangirl is not a word

Recently Merriam-Webster added a 100 words to their dictionary. One of these words is "fanboy".

Main Entry:
fan·boy Listen to the pronunciation of fanboy
Pronunciation:
\ˈfan-ˌbȯi\
Function:
noun
Date:
1919
: a boy who is an enthusiastic devotee (as of comics or movies)

Now what is not listed is Fangirl and according to Merriam-Webster, the word "fangirl" hasn't be citied enough in various well-known and print sources.

Mangapunk Meetup at A-Kon?

Since I know some of us will be at A-Kon, I was wondering if we want to do some sort of meetup like I hear about on other online communities. It could be as simple as going over to the Plaza of the Americas to get some McDonalds.

At the very least it will be just me and Chris saying "Hey" as we pass each other in the halls :P

Just a thought since A-Kon is a week away.

BTW, I almost got Rachel to A-Kon this year, but they got the guys from Apple Geeks first, so maybe next year.
