WHO WANTS TO CREATE A SUPER-HEROINE?

News David Doub - Thursday, December 27, 2007 - 17:06

I know this is technically a contest on another form, but it's open to anyone.

__________________________________________________________

Most contests in the comic book business are geared toward artists. Shadowline is bucking the tide and creating a contest geared toward writers!

According to Shadowline editor, Kristen Simon, “I’d been hoping to see a super-hero book with a strong female lead to act as a counter-point to our popular Bomb Queen series, but none were forthcoming. So I decided to come up with a contest to create a super-heroine for the 21st Century.”

The character will be 100% creator-owned as all Image and Shadowline books are (Trademark and copyright to be shared by writer and artist). The winning entry will be featured in their own self-titled three issue mini-series to be drawn by fan-favorite artist, Franchesco! (She-Dragon, Green Lantern Corps Quarterly) and back-end profits will be split between the creators.

Contest regulations are listed below. Neither Image nor Shadowline can or will be responsible for synchronicity (similar ideas appearing at the same time).

No feedback will be provided on submissions, just a confirmation of receipt.

Contest will be divided into three parts as outlined below, deviation will result in immediate disqualification:

Round One:
Contestants e-mail a BRIEF one paragraph story synopsis by January 31, 2008 to: . Stories/concept must be original with original characters. No pre-existing characters may be used unless owned by contestant.

Round Two:
Ten semi-finalists will be chosen from all entries received by the above date and notified by e-mail. They will then be required to turn in 5 (five) fully scripted pages by February 29, 2008.

Round Three:
The five finalists will be announced and their synopses posted on Newsarama on March 10. Newsarama posters will be encouraged to vote on their favorite. (Writers are strongly advised to direct traffic to the contest via message boards, myspace, etc…every vote counts!) Polls will close on April 4, 2008.

The winner will be announced April 28 with initial concept art/character design by Franchesco. First issue will be solicited with a cover date of November, 2008.

Yeah, a hereoine contest... I should probably submit my character Luciami from my stories "Princess Of The Damned", "Disturbed Leader", and "Doomsday Dance." I'd submit others like Kayame and Lora, but with their powers, and personalities I don't think they'd make the cut. Oh heck I don't think Luciami will make the cut with her powers, and personality. But I'mma give it a shot anyway.

Yes I have dreams, and fate seems to place me among others with dreams like mine.

David Doub; Thursday, December 27, 2007 - 19:07

They're just looking for new and creative ideas, so don't be afraid to submit away. The more you submit the more you have a chance to hit on something that interest them.

The big thing I would focus on is to best describe the character and story in a paragraph. You only have 5 or 6 sentences to grab their interest.

Joamette Gil; Sunday, December 30, 2007 - 08:05

I'm almost done with my first pitch. :)

Everybody remember that your pitch needs to be a BRIEF (5-6 sentences) paragraph summarizing the plot of your potential mini-series, which means you have to explain the beginning, middle, and ending of your story. Don't treat it like a teaser: you're talking to the people who will be publishing it, not to the consumer market. ;)

Just thought I'd throw that out there since I was bit confused about that at the beginning myself (and the post at Newsarama explaining these things is now HUGE).

FINAL CALL FOR WHO WANTS TO CREATE A SUPER-HEROINE SHADOWLINE C

David Doub; Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 19:26

FINAL CALL FOR WHO WANTS TO CREATE A SUPER-HEROINE SHADOWLINE CONTEST
From Jim Valentino

With less than two weeks left to go (final warning, there's still time to send yours in!), we've received hundreds of submissions. Of those, some were marked as potential semi-finalists, some were starred as runners-up, the rest were deleted and all were responded to with a confirmation of receipt.

There were tons of Pandora's, Greek (and other pantheon) Gods, celebrity heroes, sibling heroes, teams, government conspiracies and agencies, aliens, dysfunctional families, lesbians (down boys), pregnant, widowed, unwed mom heroines and second-generation heroes. We saw a lot of duplicate names, origins, powers, etc.including many names of pre-existing characters. More than even we anticipated. So if anyone sees a winning entry that looks similar to yours, you can chalk it up to syncronicity. Similarities abounded.

The synopses of the potential semi-finalists (no more than 50) will all be sent to Jim blind--that is, without the name of the creator attached--and from those he'll select ten. Only the names of the ten (10) semi-finalists will be listed at Newsarama on February 4, not the names of their super-heroine. Semi-finalists will be warned that if they reveal the name of their entry to the public, they will be immediately disqualified.

The ten semi-finalists will then be asked to send in a script for the FIRST five pages of their story. From these scripts, Shadowline will choose five finalists. Decisions made by Shadowline are final, and not debatable.

The five finalists will each have their original synopsis posted at Kristen Simon's forum on the "Who Wants to Create a Super-Heroine" message board ( www.kris-korner.com/forum) on March 10 where they can be reviewed by anyone interested in voting. A link will also be provided in the next announcement from Newsarama. You will need to register to vote. One vote per IP address will be allowed (to discourage ballot box stuffing). All synopses will be posted sans creator names and again, any finalist that reveals their
identity will be immediately disqualified. Polls will close on April 4 at noon, Central Standard Time.

The winning entry will be announced at Newsarama on April 28, along with Franchesco's initial concept art. Thereafter we will be posting progress reports and pages on a regular basis at the message board.

Click here for the original announcement and contest details.

This contest is fully run and administered by Shadowline. Newsarama in no way influences the outcome or plays any role in the decision process.

Not so fast. The only thing you should have gotten at this point was an e-mail that they did receive your entry. Since there are a lot of entries it may take a day or so to hear back. If it's been a day or so and you haven't heard back, it's okay to do a simple follow up e-mail to make sure they got your entry.

That said, all Semi-finalists will be announced in the following manner:
"Only the names of the ten (10) semi-finalists will be listed at Newsarama on February 4, not the names of their super-heroine."

WHO WANTS TO CREATE A SUPERHEROINE SEMI-FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

David Doub; Monday, February 4, 2008 - 17:49

WHO WANTS TO CREATE A SUPERHEROINE SEMI-FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From Shadowline

Below is a list of the individuals who have been chosen as the Top 10 semi-finalists in the Who Wants To Create A Super-Heroine contest.

They have each been sent a letter of instructions, among which is that they are not to identify their winning submission anywhere (we clearly defined what that meant in the letter). They are to turn in the first 5 pages of their script by a specified deadline. If they disregard this or any of the other instructions they’ve been sent, they will be immediately disqualified from the competition. If eliminated, there will be no replacement due to time constraints.

If you entered the contest and your name is not listed below, we thank you for your participation and hope that we can count on you to vote for the winner and support the book when it is released, in a show of solidarity.

The five finalists’ synopses will be posted without creator names attached on the following message board: www.kris-korner.com/forums. Further rules, regulations and timelines will posted there as well.

Synopses will be posted on March 10th, 2008. Voting will begin on March 10th at 12 noon (CST) and end on April 4th at 12 noon (CST).

We thank everyone who entered, and especially Matt and Mike at Newsarama for all of their help and support. And, of course, Franchesco! who will bring the whole thing to life!

The semi-finalists are (in alphabetical order):

Tom Arguello
Corey Brotherson
Kat Cahill
DeWayne Feenstra
John Karoauk
Dirk Manning
Rev. C. Edward Sellner
Joe Sergi
Aaron Settle
Kristopher Waddell

Thank you again for your participation and interest,

Jim Valentino, Kris Simon

Here's my unworthy entry! :D?
-----------------------------

Renee Otalpe is a liaison between the power-players of this world and the inhabitants of a surrealistic parallel dimension. These inhabitants, known as "Ideals", such as Courage and Innocence, have been a source of human inspiration since time immemorial. While engaged in a hunt (commissioned by a US government agency) for a specific piece of knowledge within this dimension, Renee learns that there are other humans who share her abilities and that a movement is being organized to seek out and destroy the Ideals. This will limit the human scope of consciousness. After being attacked by a human assassin sent to kill Ideals, Renee only escapes with her life because several of the Ideals come to her aid. She vows to return the favor by doing whatever necessary to protect the Ideals from their would-be murderers. The final confrontation takes place once she tracks down the assassin again and engages her in the first successful battle of her new alter-ego's career.

That's not...

DreamingSoul; Saturday, February 9, 2008 - 20:27

That's not so bad... I would've love to see it actually... But I feel my idea wasn't good enough either... Here it is:

I am proudly going to submit my protagonist Luciami
from my story "Princess Of The Damned." Long Story
short, Luciami is the Anti-christ, born in Hell, and
raised among the humans, by adopted human parents. In
doing so, and having no memories of being in Hell for
a century as an infant, Luciami thinks that she's a
mutant.( Mainly from watching X-men as a explanational
reference of her powers.) At age 10 Luciami is
attacked by a catholic monk, chased into a museum,
where she sees a painting of Lucifer. Upon taking note
of her resemblance to the person in the painting,
Luciami weeps then vows to free herself from all ties
with Lucifer. So far as her personality goes, Luciami
is a walking contridiction. She can be meek, and shy,
but when the situation calls for it, she can be very
brave. In a sense Luciami is somewhat of a tomboy due
to her demonic nature of being rough, and enjoying
battle, and destruction. But despite that, she is
mostly compassionate, and cares for her friends, and
is very protective of her highschool human friend, a
shy gothic/emo girl named Anna.

You can shoot me later if you want, I'm growing use to it...

Yes I have dreams, and fate seems to place me among others with dreams like mine.

Superheroine Contest Entry/Submission Pitch 1

David Doub; Wednesday, March 12, 2008 - 20:25

I'm a little slow apparently. If you want to vote on the finalists you can go to:

http://www.kris-korner.com/forum/index.php?topic=984.0

But anyways on to my first pitch.

A young teacher struggles to do more in all aspects in her life. She wants to help her students in all ways, from school issues to personal issues that range from drug abuse to child abuse. She also wants more out of her personal life with her new relationship with a man she thought was "the one". This is all complicated when she finds out that she has an auto-immune disease in her digestive system. An experimental treatment is used to help treat her and while it does nothing to help her auto-immune disease, an unnoticed side affect is that the rest of her system is "enhanced". While reveling in her new found abilities, she inadvertently finds about the student ran drug ring in town. With everyone involved being inexperienced and a tad naive, the teacher gets hurt and finds out herself in the hospital once again. She tries to confide in her boyfriend in what happened and her thoughts about maybe using her newfound "gift' to try and help other kids in needs. The boyfriend is sympathetic in with her desires to help others, but he can reconcile that with his fears about her getting hurt again, so he gives her an ultimatum that she never user her "powers" again or he'll leave her. So despite the pain and heartache it causes her, she chooses to continue to user her powers for good and the boyfriend leaves her.

Superheroine Contest Entry/Submission Pitch 2

David Doub; Wednesday, March 12, 2008 - 20:26

Sandra Smith thought she had an "easy" enough time being one of the few African-American kids in the city of White Bear Lake MN, so she thought to "simplify" her life even more by becoming the only female African-American police officer in town. Since everything for Sandra was fairly "easy" and "simple", fate decided to complicate things one evening while Sandra was responding to a burglary in progress. Instead of being killed by the criminal perpetrators, Sandra found herself being saved by a woman clad in old Viking gear, calling herself Karita and claiming to be Sandra's Fylgja. According to this Karita, she was called forth to help aid Sandra in defending the descendants of Scandinavia from a horrible catastrophe. That catastrophe being a terrorist plot of setting off a nuclear weapon in what they consider "a prime example of middle white America" and then let the rest of USA sit in fear as the nuclear fall out drifts to the more populated and influential American Northeast.

WINNER NAMED IN SHADOWLINE'S WHO WANTS TO CREATE A SUPER-HEROIN

David Doub; Friday, April 11, 2008 - 16:18

WINNER NAMED IN SHADOWLINE'S WHO WANTS TO CREATE A SUPER-HEROINE CONTEST
Press Release

With over 5,000 entries to go through, five finalists were announced in what may have been comics’ first contest for writers! For the first time ever the fans were allowed to choose their favorite, which will go on to be published through Shadowline as 3-issue mini-series, drawn by fan-favorite artist Franchesco!

The clear winner was Tom Arguello’s Incredible Journey:

Journey Dominguez was a normal teenage girl with big dreams living in a world full of superheroes. All she ever wanted was to be one of them. Everything changes one day when she finds a strange necklace on the street. She puts it on only to find out that she cannot take it off, and that it gives her the ability to summon a temporary superpower for whatever situation she’s in. There’s only one catch; every time she uses a power, she is really stealing it from one of the Superheroes, leaving them permanently powerless and the world increasingly defenseless. All Journey Dominguez ever wanted to be was a super hero. Now, she must convince the world she is not a super villain!

Shadowline Editor-in-Chief Kris Simon and President Jim Valentino would like to congratulate Tom and the four runners-up for their participation over these last 3 months:

1. Kat Cahill: I Hate Galaxy Girl
2. Dirk Manning: Hope
3. C. Edward Sellner: I’ll Fly Away
4. Kristopher Waddell: Challenger

But it doesn’t end here! Over the next several months we will be showing the entire process of creating a comic from plot to script, from layouts to finished art giving an insiders view into making a comic step-by-step, warts and all (another first?) with a lot of help from the artist, Franchesco! It should prove to be an educational experience for anyone interested in making comics.

Please join us at www.kris-korner.com in the ‘Who Wants to Create a Super Heroine’ forum and watch as the book progresses through its many stages.

Shadowline would like to thank all of those who submitted, voted, our final five and yes, even all those who nitpicked, griped and were otherwise rude…at least we got you talking and hopefully, thinking. And now, you’ll excuse us as we’re about to embark on an Incredible Journey!

You can shoot me later if you want, I'm growing use to it...

well I think this was only not accepted because it doesnt fit the theme.. lol, I mean, if you wanted to make it more superheroine type of deal, you shoukld have put more about that part in there, otherwise, the people reading this are going off of nothing but a background of a character and seemingly little to a plot line. write more about protecting the greater good or something for this.
