Rules of 'finding a publisher'

Rachel the Great's picture
News Rachel the Great - Saturday, January 6, 2007 - 05:01

Have you ever thought to yourself, "Gee, I'd like to get a comic published?" Before you walk down that long, long road, maybe you should have a chuckle over this little tongue-in-cheek number by Christopher Butcher:

http://comics212.net/2007_01_01_archive.shtml#116797143815896852

I say that if you want to make comics, you should go ahead and make them. Don't expect to get published. Don't expect to get rich or even famous. If you can still keep making comics (and good comics) without those prospects, power to you!

Unfortunetly its to late for them.

Yet you expect me to care, to care about you.

Now you're staring at me, You stare at me as your love fades to grey.

What did you expect, Did you expectg me to love, love you with a heart I've never had?

Wow, that was certainly depressing and disheartening...

Yup. It certainly was, Mel. Let's become filthy rich comics moguls and make him look bad! ;p

He's being brutally honest.

Rachel the Great; Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 22:11

He's being brutally honest. I know what he's talking about. A lot of good, nice, hardworking people are trying to get into comics and they probably will come up empty handed because they just didn't have what it takes. Heh, when I was seventeen, he probably would have said the same thing to me.

Anime Punk Joey; Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 22:25

I know he is. I'd just rather take such things as a reason to try harder rather than an excuse to stop trying. People need to be sure to take this article as a warning to be smart about what they do and not get lost in delusions of grandeur. The more sensitive sect of comickers is likely to be fatally wounded if they don't make the distinction between brutal honesty and brutal bashing.

If a hopeful comicker is put off by the above article, then they won't survive the submission/rejection process.

I just think it's fair to let them know that in advance. Those not born strong can become strong after all. :)

Discouragement

ragdoll_sensei; Monday, January 8, 2007 - 10:51

I dunno, maybe I'm just being sorta bitchy myself with this, but I have a really hard time coming to terms with the notion that an artist/writer/creator has to be so completely detached from their emotions to "make it" in the art/comic book industry. Seriously, man, since when are artists supposed to be mentally stable individuals? How can you have even an ounce of passion for your work and not get upset, devastated even, by some random fanboy geek telling you you're just not "good enough" and you should just quit while you're ahead. An article like this could completely kill a young girl's desire to even TRY creating comics, when in reality even if she worked for years on it and it never went anywhere, the process of creation itself could have been profoundly cathartic for her.
I mean, I can see where this guy is coming from as far as: yeah... breaking into ANY field of entertainment is extremely tough; but my point is solely that there's just too much of this negative bullsh*t going around. And when someone as resilient and f-ing determined as me can question whether it's worth it or not just from reading this article, I shudder to think what it has done to the potential creators who haven't been plugging away at it for over a decade.
I want to see my comics in print and sitting on a shelf at the store. It's just hard to hear about how much of a one-in-a-million chance I have of that actually happening (regardless of my skills) while I'm smack in the middle of penciling a particularly gut-wrenching issue.
*breathes*
Sorry... just had to get that out of me.

Anime Punk Joey; Monday, January 8, 2007 - 14:45

Yeah, I get you, Mel. The article reeks of Social Darwinism. I wonder if he gave any constructive advice to the people he mentioned in the beginning of the article other than, "If you suck, don't try."

Keep at it don't stop b/c one person doubts your ability. If you let that stop you, then you'll never make it in any industry.
