Doctors let her down

Plant; Wednesday, February 27, 2008 - 04:40

How unusual. She could probably sue the orthidontist who didn't check her jaw in the first place, she's American right?
Well at least she can get it fixed. I broke my right hand then my right wrist 4 years later, both needed surgery but didn't get it. Even though both turned out better than hoped for I know how she feels and if I had paypal I'd send her a few bob. Remind me in August, I should be able to help her then.

This will probably stay up on the front page until she doesn't need it anymore, so it'll be hard to forget it. ;)

Would if I Could

psychobabe13; Thursday, February 28, 2008 - 21:29

Sorry, Rachel, can't. I don't think my parents would appreciate me spending money on somebody elses teeth.

<3,

I sealed a card with a $10

Hairballed Kat; Sunday, March 2, 2008 - 19:56

I sealed a card with a $10 bill enclosed today, but it probably won't be mailed for a few days (though it shouldn't be more than a couple of days in the mail). I wish I could spend more, but I haven't been earning anything lately and I've got a lot of expenses coming up soon, what with being a senior and all. It's good to know that what I'm giving is a drop in the bucket compared with the generosity that's been flowing her way.

My dad's union wiped out our dental plan a little while ago, and I'm starting to think that my growing wisdom teeth are messing with my jaw, so I feel for Rachel a lot. I hope everything works out.

And guys, it's easy to sit here and say we hope for good things to happen, but it was honestly just as easy for me to write a nice note, grab a little money (the same amount I'd spend on a date or a school field trip), and address and stamp an envelope. That's really all I did. It wasn't heroic. Maybe you have legitimate reasons not to, and I don't want to accuse anyone of being lazy or making excuses, but Rachel is the reason we're all here on this website and I know she's inspired a lot of us. It really doesn't hurt to help.

I have $50

Plant; Monday, March 3, 2008 - 03:41

And I need that to buy pants, 2 days out of 3 I need to wear a recycled pair of shorts.
I said August because I'll either be starved to death or I'll have a job and be doing OK and be able to set up a paypal account, you need to be 18 to make one right?

xXRed13Xx; Monday, March 3, 2008 - 14:00

I don't really like sending money by post, but I will try and set up a pay pal at some point. I have been a bit busy with work at the moment, so I don't have much time, but I do have money :) so I'll send some soon!

And Kat $10 dollars (like £5?) on a date? You cheapskate :D I spent almost £100 taking a girl out on friday :) And I don't earn a huge amount :D

Hairballed Kat; Monday, March 3, 2008 - 21:33

Heh, we usually split the bill unless my boyfriend is broke... but yeah, I am cheap. We usually just eat Chinese food (in the deserted carryout restaurant -- classy!) and watch a DVD. You silly boy, spending so much on girls. The best things in life (except good health O.o) are free!

Or touch another human

Anime Punk Joey; Tuesday, March 4, 2008 - 02:44

Or touch another human being, or anything, ever. Can't forget about them germs!

Oh, and don't ever fall down the stairs. And make sure you aren't born into a family with a history of cancer or diabetes (very important).

Sorry, Plant. That was just too silly. :P

What % of heart dissease deaths are NON-smokers?

Plant; Tuesday, March 4, 2008 - 12:24

What's the chance of developing type 2 diabetes if you eat right even if you DO have a family history?
Even your likely-hood of developing cancer drops if you eat right (eating right doesn't mean forking out $$$ a week at health food stores by the way).
As for germs, if anything less than a laboritory-developed biological weapon kills you then you deserve to die without passing on your genetics, like it or not it's the way of the world.

As for the stairs, just take the elevator or install a ramp ;)

There are people who are

Anime Punk Joey; Wednesday, March 5, 2008 - 18:11

There are people who are BORN with diabetes, which you are well aware of since you made sure to specify "type 2" in your argument. You also seem to be saying that because your "likely-hood" of developing something is lowered that it *most definitely* won't happen to you - wrong. And that statement ("As for germs, if anything less than a laboritory-developed biological weapon kills you then you deserve to die without passing on your genetics, like it or not it's the way of the world.") pretty much makes it your moral obligation to die quietly should you ever develop some potentially fatal, albeit treatable, illness. Come to think of it, it also makes it your moral obligation to drag yourself to outings should your legs ever break because wheel-chairs are for underdeveloped weaklings who deserve to get run over by cars for lacking the bone strength to remain on their feet throughout the whole of their lives - at least, according to your logic.

Good luck earning the money to buy that wheelchair without any legs or insurance in a world where, you know, you deserve to die for this show of genetic inferiority anyway.

By the way, for everyone who doesn't know this already, Rachel's jaw bone's so weak because she fell down the stairs and broke it when she was younger. Talking and chewing are painful to her, and without the money to fix her jaw she can kiss her teeth good-bye before she's 40.

Plant, I am not going to tolerate any further talk of people being worthless because they need f*cking health care on this site. Accept when you are wrong.

*sigh*

Plant; Wednesday, March 5, 2008 - 23:56

I read the article, I know about her falling down the stairs and I never said anything about someone suffering an accident not deserving treatment, please take care not to put words in my mouth, you're putting your foot in your own.

My point is people have resistances to germs, if people without resistances are saved by drugs they pass on their genes and a few generations later everyone is dependent on drugs. And when the drugs stop working (and some of them already have) a huge chunk of the population will die. Sounds like Science Fiction but it's not.

As for

I DO plan to lie down and die quietly should I even develop an illness that I would pass down with my genes. Well maybe not quietly, I'd wanna have some fun on my way out.

And all that stuff about wheelchairs and insurance, you really have no idea what my logic is, I never mentioned either. All I was trying to say, is that a lot health problems are somewhat avoidable.

Re: *sigh*

David Doub; Thursday, March 6, 2008 - 00:27

Okay, we're getting way off topic here. The issue here is helping out someone in need. No more, no less. If you don't want to help, that is your choose, but please keep any politics or philosophy out of this thread.

The basic issue is here that because of insurance and malpractice lawsuits, Doctors tend to charge a lot. The problem with that is if you’re self-employed (like Rachel) you have to carry the burden of the full cost of any medical expense. Good or Bad, that’s the currently the way it works and if you want to maintain a certain quality of life, you’re going to pay for it (well someone is going to pay for it).

And personally I find this idea of “Survival of the Fittest” quaint, simple and naïve. It totally ignores the complexities of human life, experience and emotions.

Indeed

Plant; Thursday, March 6, 2008 - 02:51

Life and death ignore emotion, people die even if they are loved. So it's simply the other way around, thinking that "human life, experience and emotions" alter the reality of life is naive.
As I said in the first reply, I'll send a few dollars in August, as I'm still only 17 and don't have paypal.
Maybe by then the recession America isn't going to have (according to Bush) will have the US dollar low enough that a few Australian dollors will make a difference.

I sent $10. I would send

quamp; Friday, March 7, 2008 - 00:52

I sent $10. I would send more, but I'm a bit strapped for cash this month (that and I'm going to Anime Matsuri.) I did post this over on two message boards though.

Something I saw today in a restaurant was a jar with a picture of a boy that has cancer in it. He needed an operation and the co-pay alone was $30,000. Rachel, you might try doing that as well. Get a bunch of jars, cut a slot in the lid, and see if you can leave them at various places.

I had maxiofacial surgery when I was a teen. Man, my jaw hurt for weeks after the surgery. I was only barely able to eat soft food for a week. The surgeon also broke one of my front teeth and made a replair on it. I didn't find out about this until two years later when it broke and fell out. I still have that tooth broken.
