Cartoon Network Terrorist Scare

Note - this was part of a marketing scheme for Aqua Teen Force

By KEN MAGUIRE, Associated Press Writer

BOSTON - Several illuminated electronic devices planted at bridges and other spots in Boston threw a scare into the city Wednesday in what turned out to be a publicity campaign for a late-night cable cartoon. Most of the devices depict a character giving the finger.

Peter Berdovsky, 27, of Arlington, and Sean Stevens, 28, of Charlestown, were each arrested Wednesday night on one felony charge of placing a hoax device and one charge of disorderly conduct, state Attorney General Martha Coakley said.

In a news release announcing Stevens' arrest, she said the men worked together to place the devices. At an earlier news conference she said Berdovsky had been hired to place the devices.

Highways, bridges and a section of the Charles River were shut down and bomb squads were sent in before authorities declared the devices were harmless.

Cartoon Network head resigns after scare

David Doub; Friday, February 9, 2007 - 21:03

[ATLANTA - The head of the Cartoon Network resigned Friday following a marketing stunt that caused a terrorism scare in Boston and led police to shut down bridges and send in the bomb squad.

The announcement of Jim Samples' resignation came in an internal memo to Cartoon Network staff members.

"It's my hope that my decision allows us to put this chapter behind us and get back to our mission of delivering unrivaled original animated entertainment for consumers of all ages," said Samples, who was the network's general manager and executive vice president.

He said he regretted what had happened and felt "compelled to step down, effective immediately, in recognition of the gravity of the situation that occurred under my watch."]

Sinn; Friday, February 9, 2007 - 21:42

I heard that the press conference regarding the two employees charged went something like this:

Employees/evil-doing terrorists: "We will only answer questions relating to 60's and 70's hairstyles."

Reporters: "Did you know that you would be arrested for your actions?"

Employees/ne'er-do-wells: "I'm sorry, that has nothing to do with 60's or 70's hairstyles. We have no further comment."

The cartoon network will pay the city of Boston some $2.8 million for this 'inconvenience.'
I also heard that there was another city where one of these things appeared somewhere in Texas. The person who put it up was arrested as well - for putting up a character making an offensive gesture.

Allright, what bothers me

Sinn; Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 01:21

Allright, what bothers me about this is not Boston trying to use this as an excuse to pry about $3 mil out of cartoon network. I mean, I like adult swim, but if Boston needs funds for schools, public transport, public housing, etc. then, well better it go towards that. What bothers me about this is the "terrorism" scare and accompanying media frenzy on what was ultimately a harmless marketing gimmick.

The first red scare in the

Sinn; Monday, February 12, 2007 - 03:57

The first red scare in the United States began in the mid 'teens and continued until the early twenties, though its ramifications are still felt today. Basically, because of the growing impact of Anarchists, Communists, and Socialists, the government, local police departments, and leaders of private enterprise began conspiring to harass, undermine, spy on, imprison, beat and kill radicals for their beliefs.

You see, socialism was a growing for ce in the US since the mid 1880's when socialists - specifically anarchists - began (and won) the fight for the 8-hour workday. Their ranks began to swell until a wave of police brutality and false imprisonments came down in the late nineteenth century. However, in 1905 a group of radical labor unions held a congress in Chicago to form the Industrial Workers of the World (or the I.W.W.) This radical union served as a forum for radical socialists like communists and anarchists to come together. Since its founding the organization has insisted on promoting workplace democracy and holding a completely democratic union. The goal is first to get better working conditions and wages for all workers,; next, once all of the members of a certain factory or store or dock are unionized a "wobbly shop" (The I.W.W. has the nick-name of "The wobblies"). A "Wobbly shop" elects their manager from the body of workers, and they can replace that manager at anytime, if the need arises. These delgates all send reports back to general headquartersThere's only one paid position in the entire union - that of secretary treasurer, and that position is not only elected, but poorly paid to discourage corruption - plus we make them put out expense reports every month, so corruption's nigh-on impossible.

The I.W.W. and the Socialist party grew quickly in America from the early 1900's to the mid twenties. The Socialist party's charasmatic presidential candidate Eugene V. Debs. The socialist party began getting senators into congress - including the first female senator, a senator O' Hara from Chicago. They also began getting double digit percentages in the presidential elections, forcing more "leftist" policies out of the other two parties. Meanwhile, the I.W.W. continued to advocate peaceful revolution through a massive general strike and peaked at 100,000 members, though in a strike they could garner around three times as many, if not more.

This didn't sit well with those in congress, or in state legislatures, or in the business community, or in various police departments. Their response to this was to create a mass hysteria in the media, to gerry-mander districts to destroy the power of impoverished voting blocs, to infiltrate peaceful strikes with hired goons who'd try and start fights, and, in the case of the police or private security forces like the pinkertons, to just up and attack/jail strikers and protestors. Hundreds of I.W.W. members were falsely charged with treason during World War I, while, in Brisbee, Arizona armed thugs herded hundreds of Wobblies onto train cars at gunpoint only to dump them in the middle of the desert. There they managed to run into an army brigade, who held them prisoner for 3 months without charges. In the Northwest, lynch mobs of businessmen would get drunk and murder I.W.W. members and hang them from trees. Also, the American Foreign Legion took it upon themselves to form impromptu armies and open fire on I.W.W. union halls. Finally, over 140 I.W.W. organizers, along with hundreds of prominent anarchists and communists were rounded up on bullsh*t charges and deported to the USSR.

Then in the 50's there was the era of McCarthyism, which further damaged a weakened American socialist movement, then in the '60's and 70's the FBI used its counterintelligence branch COINTELPRO to infiltrate, imprison, and ASSASSINATE such prominent american radicals as the Black Panthers, as well as destroy the American Socialist Party, and illegally spy on people like MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

gotta love that constitution folks. Guess when the said we have the freedoms to speak, assemble, and peetition, they didn't mean to include us Reds and Blacks, huh?

Anime Punk Joey; Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 04:03

They didn't mean to include anyone that would betray the "founding principles" of or "jeopardize the general welfare" of our "blessed" nation. Ah.. Gotta admit, Madison and the others were world-class crafters of Grade-A bullsh*t.

The fact that labor unions themselves are jam-packed with corruption doesn't offer much inspiration either. People suck.

AFL = Corrupt, IWW = Pristine

Sinn; Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 05:25

Yeah, labor corruption is a garuntee in a bureaucratic organization that seeks to cooperate with the boss. Well-paid negotiators don't have the same concerns as rank-and-file workers, and if they hold closed meetings with the boss they can be bribed into getting their workers worse deals.

Basically, union corruption can be boiled down to the same root as corruption within a corporation or corruption within a state - a seperation of the bureaucracy from accountability. The IWW has never really had, in it's 100+ years of existence, a serious case of corruption that couldn't be handled immeadiately. You see, there is no safe layer of bureaucratic red-tape to insulate anyone in the IWW. All leaders are directly elected by their workers. All contracts they negotiate must be ratified by the union's workers. All positions held can be quickly and democratically recalled. There's only one position that gets paid, and that's the GST (General Secretary Treasurer) and their salary (along with all income and expenses) are publically printed in each GOB (General Organizational Bulletin) which goes out to every member at least 8 times a year (I think last year we had 11).

So yeah, IWW = not corrupt. In fact, have fun trying to be corrupt in it, 'cause you'll get your ass thrown on the curb in a second.

...sorry, one of those "passionate subjects" for me, what with being a member and all.
