Your time online may get limited soon

quamp's picture
Rant quamp - Tuesday, February 12, 2008 - 01:04

Story here

Due to the amount of traffic on the internet, ISPs are now considering limiting the amount of time we spend online.

Quote:
Now, Internet service providers are starting to limit the availability of dishes that are popular with the big eaters (controlling traffic). They're also considering telling us to stick to two helpings per person (limiting monthly downloads). They might end up doing both.

If this trend continues, you will be limited to so many hours online per month and only able to download so much. Does this make you angry? It does me. For starters, how are you going to enforce this on businesses? Will our public libraries only have internet access for a few hours each month, clogging up already long lines in some places?

Quote:
The consumer ISPs at the forefront of these trends are cable providers. Comcast Corp. has become the poster case for traffic control by hampering some file sharing, and Time Warner Cable Inc. is testing monthly bandwidth caps.

This is hardly an accident, because congestion is a greater threat to cable companies.

Of course. If you can't get online, then they suggest you watch cable TV instead.

Quote:
But these solutions [of upgrading] cost money. Stan Schatt, an analyst at ABI Research, estimates that cable providers need to spend $24 billion through 2012 to upgrade their networks.

It's simpler to limit what people can see and then give the profits to the shareholders, isn't it?

Quote:
Phone companies like AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc., which operate digital subscriber lines, aren't immune to congestion. But since phone lines aren't shared, bottlenecks for DSL service are deeper in the system, on routers and fiber-optic links that are easier to upgrade.

So you're pretty much screwed no matter which way you go.

It's sad that companies choose profits over service.

Just another problem

Plant; Tuesday, February 12, 2008 - 04:40

Kevin Rudd and his ill-thought out plan of laptops and internet access for every student and unlimited broadband internet access for every school (even though the state just took over complete control of every public school's entire telecomunications network and brought them "up to scatch", dramatically slowing my former school's internet access and changing the maintenence response time from 2 days to 3 weeks) will raise internet access prices by at least 50% here down under. On top of that he's trying to introduce mandatory filtering by IPS's (meaning the user has no choice in what's blocked), it wouldn't be such a problem if he wasn't a christian idealist. Today they filter out child pornography, tomorrow it's islamic news sites, regular pornography and any websites that don't support the political party that's currently in power.
2 or 3 years ago there was talk of the US government trying to buy-out the nodes that every telecomunications cable in the world run through (basically a giant switch that everything in a city, state or even entire country branches off from, all of them are joined together and the makes up the world wide web). I only heard about it once and they said the UN was trying to stop them.

ARGH! (again)

Plant; Tuesday, February 12, 2008 - 04:53

I tried to edit and it just duplicated the post!

In conclusion: it's just another problem on the list (the internet thing, not the dupliction thing).

Me! Me! That is so effing

WaterFaerie; Thursday, February 14, 2008 - 00:50

Me! Me!
That is so effing stupid. If the internet is getting clogged, make it bigger. Don't freaking limit time on the internet. That is so idiotic I cannot find anymore advanced vocabulary to describe the horror. *cries*

So my advice to you is just to be a sweet pickle and everything will turn out for you in life - everything.

I hate watching TV, how is

Kurenai Ichi; Saturday, February 16, 2008 - 17:28

I hate watching TV, how is that equil? The internet offers way more than any ammount of purhcased cable.. ever! I think they should just get rid of cable and let the internet take care of all those needs and we can pay a little more instead of using cable.

**fuuming!!**

Watching anime etc over the internet is part of the problem.

Plant; Sunday, February 17, 2008 - 02:12

It takes up lot of bandwidth. What they ought to do is clean up the internet, get rid of all the crud like child porn, scam websites, myspace etc.

Well, about dishes...

I saw a story about this recently on PBS. It seems that there is a shortage in space of areas where communication satellites can be sucessfully placed, especially over North America. In fact, the report said there would be no room for new satellites in 2013. Additionally, the cost of putting up a new satellite is very expensive. We're talking $50 million to reserve a space, and another $45 million to launch the satellite. (But renting someone else's satillite is about $110 million!)

What they really need are satellies that have more capabilities and not rely on older designs. Also they shouldn't rely too heavily on satellites, and use more earthbound equipment.
