The voices in your head may be ads

Story here

Quote:
NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- New Yorker Alison Wilson was walking down Prince Street in SoHo last week when she heard a woman's voice right in her ear asking, "Who's there? Who's there?" She looked around to find no one in her immediate surroundings. Then the voice said, "It's not your imagination."

Indeed it isn't. It's an ad for "Paranormal State," a ghost-themed series premiering on A&E this week. The billboard uses technology manufactured by Holosonic that transmits an "audio spotlight" from a rooftop speaker so that the sound is contained within your cranium.

So now they have a way to broadcast messages right into one's head. This really opens the door for lunatic fringe groups to get loads of subliminal messages out.

This reminds me of some psychological experiments done in the 1960's in a movie theater. To the movie soundtrack, they added a disembodied voice saying things like "buy more coke" and "popcorn sounds good now." Sales of various items at the conession stands went up as much as 25%. Other things tried were inserting a single frame of popcorn or a cold drink into another film. Sales jumped another 25% there.

They banned that kind of thing shortly thereafter.
This is very dangerous and it should be banned now.
*thinks* Hmm... maybe this is how Bush got reelected last time around.

Wow. This is even more

Joamette Gil; Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - 02:27

Wow. This is even more disturbing than usual for your headlines, quamp. o_o

I really wonder if having the voice directly in your head will make that big of a difference, though. We already think in terms of name brands, and our mind associates day-to-day things with various television ads. We quote advertisers constantly in everyday conversation. It's pretty ingrained in there already, I'd say.

Technologically speaking, of course, that does make it a pretty awesome billboard... 0.o

You should be able to choose whether you notice an ad or not

Plant; Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - 02:41

This is worse than the people who bluetooth ads to your phone as you walk past their building.
I reckon most people people wouldn't be impressed by this and even boycott the product (I boycott products if the ads are tastelessly sexual in nature, I'd sure as heck boycott and product advertised to me on the sly)

Hmm. You've got a good

Joamette Gil; Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - 02:48

Hmm. You've got a good point, Plant. Now that I think about it, doesn't this qualify as a human rights violation of some sort? I mean, we're practically guaranteed to be brainwashed by something or other in a consumer culture (whether or not we at some point get over it); something like this takes away what little power we have to try and avoid it.

Bluetooth? What'sit

Dungionman 3; Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - 14:10

Bluetooth? What'sit mean?

Anyway, quamp, you watch too much sci-fi. Or Stephen King movies. Or both.

Bluetooth is like sending files through radio signals

Plant; Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - 15:04

Like you've got all these "wireless bluetooth accessories" for phones and computers but they really just work the same way as the signals that command a remote control car (different bandwidths though).

Actually, I don't watch that much sci-fi or read Steven King novels. (In fact, the only thing I read of his was an exerpt from his book on the writing process.) I just believe that people shouldn't have things directly beamed into their brains.

Bluetooth is a program found in most portable electronics (laptops, cell phones, etc.) that allows communication between those devices.

What if the company who spammed us some how managed to do what "Paranormal State" did? "Go download Fairy Tail" "Go download bleach".

Anyways, is there anyway to stop the companies from subliminal messaging, cause that's just plain creepy. Also, Carolyn, are you by any chance refering to Stephen Kings book "Cell", because that seems to remind me of this conversation

Ofcourse there is, I haven't recieved any of these subliminal messages, so I can only assume that my telepathic mutant abilities are blocking them.

You all need to hurry up and evolve to my level so your mutant powers manifest.

Red don't you mean devolve

Reiko Kitsune; Thursday, December 13, 2007 - 21:33

Red don't you mean devolve to your level? Sorry, that was a bit uncalled for.

This is cool, but really should be banned, or at least let people know that they are entering an area that has this kind of ad, and mark the sidewalk to let them know that if you stand there, you will be subjected to this.

I don't have much of a complaint as long as this technology is used well, and never against someone's consent.

mutants and ads

Ren-chancrusade; Friday, December 14, 2007 - 01:58

I've always wanted to be a mutant like the x-men. I loved nightcrawler.

Anyways, i like your idea Reiko, but i can totally see companies complaining that this would be a waste of money.

Yeah Nightcrawler is cool, not as uber as Colossus though. Anybody on MP actually read any of the X-Men comics or know much about X-Men?
Hmm I've got a bit off topic here... but yeh I would quite like to get some of these psychic advertisements, would love to see what they feel like :D

People...

quamp; Monday, December 24, 2007 - 01:39

Let's snap back to reality here.
There is no such thing as telepathy, at least the kind that's scientifically provable.
The whole point is that there are dangerous technologies out there and you have to be aware of them and take steps to stop yourself from falling victim to them.

If you've ever seen the anime Welcome to the NHK, you'll have some understanding of what I'm talking about.
