"Real Manga"

Rant furubafan3 - Sunday, January 20, 2008 - 01:46

My friends and I have worked really hard on this zine, displaying our artwork and comics. We self published and distributed it throughout the school and quite frankly I was really proud of our accommplishment. I mean it was really neat to have a goal reached.

Now a friend of mine claims that we had no manga in our zine despite the numerous comics in the japanese style. Now I always thought manga just meant comics in japanese; and manga didn't have to be in graphic novel format as long as it was in the japanese style. Of course he goes saying we shouldn't call it a "manga magazine" because none of the comics exceed 20 pages.

Gr.. I'm just so annoyed to have something I worked so hard on get shot down. I'm sick of the little boy cult of comickers at my school always critisizing us. Girls can draw comics too! Who cares if I don't draw mechas or wannabe X-men characters my bunnies and toasters will kick your butt!

Now I want to know if my terminology is correct or not. I've backed myself u with numerous sources but I just want to double check. Here's a conversation me and my guy friend had.

Boy: i'm not comin down on the art in the zine, it is just that it CONTAINS NO MANGA.
art's great.

Me: Manga means comics in japanese. We have comics in the zine. Therefore we have manga. We just call it manga instead of comics because we draw in the japanese style. MANGA DOES NOT EQUAL GRAPHIC NOVEL. There is such thing as manga strips, or comic strips they are both ultimatley the same thing. Images with words and dialouge to tell a story.

Boy: no such thing as manga strips.manga actually means involuntary sketch. and fail.

Me:And your source is?

Boy: history texties, oh and common knowledge.

Me: Well I have sources as well.
Deviantart says manga is.

Traditional manga comics that are sequential images that tell a story and are part of an ongoing book, web comic or strips.

So there is such thing a manga strips. I can also source the definition of the term manga. It MEANS comics in japanese. Sourced from Manga the complete guide by Jason Thompson. This book has been published in 2007 so it's probably more recent then your history texties.

Oh and ask anyone on Mangapunk.com a forum for manga artists and fans what the definiton for manga is. Is that enough common knoledge for you?

I don't mean to fight but we all worked hard on this darn zine and I will defend it to the death. It may be small now but it's getting bigger and better.

You said you drew your own manga then that's great! Good for you. Can I see it? If you consider it "real manga"

At least we had the guts to distribute it. At least we had the guts to organize.

I always thought manga was

Dungionman 3; Sunday, January 20, 2008 - 04:08

I always thought manga was the style, not the pages it had, Slap that sun-uh-vuh for me, will you? I think it's manga if it follows the Japanese style and it is only OFTEN graphic novels and written backwards! Am I right?
Wait, if Manga is Japanese, what is anime?

Manga to me is the style of artwork

Plant; Sunday, January 20, 2008 - 07:26

Manga didn't mean comic originally, back in 1600 and something it came to be, and it meant incomplete or incorrect scetch, not involuntary (the whole story has something to do with graffiti or something, I don't have the book any more and don't remember it too well).
After world war 2 the manga we know and love came to be, and this is when manga came to mean comic.
Also the size of a comic has nothing to do with a manga, there's heaps of 4 pannel manga serials that have even been made into full length mangas and animes.
PS. Wikipedia says: Manga, literally translated, means "whimsical pictures".

Wow again...

DreamingSoul; Sunday, January 20, 2008 - 21:25

don't mean to offend you, but wow you've got some irgorant friends... Yes manga is comic in Japanese, and from what I understand if it's a magizine that show cases multiple titles each comic doesn't need to be 20 pages...( It ultimately depends on the zine creator.) And lastly Yes girls can draw Manga... Sailor-Moon, Fushigi-Yuugi, Ceres Celestial Legends, Tokyo Mew Mew, and Inu-yasha were created by women... Besides your friends need to read some webcomics...

Yes I have dreams, and fate seems to place me among others with dreams like mine.

How about this: "Manga" is a

Hairballed Kat; Sunday, January 20, 2008 - 22:17

How about this: "Manga" is a buzzword that has lost all meaning, kind of like "goth" and "punk," and arguing about it is futile.

There does seem to be 2 camps of thought about the word manga.

David Doub; Monday, January 21, 2008 - 15:17

There does seem to be 2 camps of thought about the word manga.

There’s the technical camp that understands the meaning of the word and recognizes there are various techniques, styles, even formula that help from this type of sequential storytelling. Rachel Nabors is a very good example of this. She makes sequential stories that uses techniques from Manga and Comics, but doesn’t squarely fit in current pre-existing categories. Some might say that this is a form of evolution for the art form as different ideas and schools of thought start to change how the various troupes of Manga are used.

Then there’s the more cultural camp, and not cultural as in they’re more into things Japanese, but the hybrid anime/manga culture that has formed in the US. These are the same folks who have taken the word Otaku, a clear insult in Japan, and have turned it into a badge of honor in the US. This group is interesting because while they feel their actions and beliefs are more “pure” Japanese, they are very outspoken and proud which is clearly an American type response and not a Japanese one. Japanese culture is more quite and reserved and a Japanese “fan” would typically only “argue” fannish things with a member of their inner circle, far away from public view.

But yeah, like you noticed above, neither are right or wrong considering you viewpoints. To be a good sport, I would suggest to offer that guy a chance to write an article in your magazine explaining why it isn’t manga. Mind you it has to actually be decently written so it’s just not a bunch of “This mag sux0r!1!”. Good journalism does try to show various sides on a subject matter.

someones a dumba$$

Hiurro; Tuesday, November 11, 2008 - 03:34

First, manga means "wimsical image" acording to some website that may or may not be wikipedia. Second there are several manga less than twenty pages. In fact there is an entire type of manga called "4 koma" that is basicly a manga strip 4 panells long. so tell that kid hes retarded and get it over with. He prabably one of those people that pronouses manga wrong.
