Maybe it's just me, but this is a tad disturbing...

Story here

Quote:
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Preschoolers preferred the taste of burgers and fries when they came in McDonald's wrappers over the same food in plain wrapping, U.S. researchers said, suggesting fast-food marketing reaches the very young.

How does wrapping it in a McDonald's wrapper make it taste better?

Quote:
"Even for baby carrots, kids said the carrots they thought were from McDonald's tasted better," Robinson said.

The same was true of milk.

He said the study supports efforts to ban or regulate advertising or marketing of high-calorie, low-nutrient foods and beverages directed to young children.

Heck, get 'em while they're young, and hook 'em for life! [/profits over people and planet mode]

Are we a society so driven by image that substance is becoming a thing of the past?

It might not even be intentional...

Plant; Tuesday, August 14, 2007 - 12:15

But I do find it concerning. I know a little about everything, and I reckon that the children expect more from the McCarrots so they taste better, just like you can give a person a useless sugar pill but tell them its morphine they wont feel pain until you tell them its a placebo (love that band).
My point being the kids just imagine that the McCarrots are better than they are because the other McFoods are so good. Forget all your (not you specifically quamp) conspiracy theories about "The Corporations" brain-washing children.
In short, the mind holds sway over the senses, thank you and good night.

It's that whole mental

shadowmistress; Wednesday, August 15, 2007 - 20:41

It's that whole mental thing. If youi tell someone something enough, they will believe it. Like some medical conditions. In some cases, peole have actually believed they were sick so strongly, their brain reacted anmd MADE them sick. Look around. There are billboards everywhere advertising a lot of fast food places lok Mickey-D's. Im sure by now a larg number of people would do the same as the children by now. Things like that have been burned into our heads since god knos when. It's like brands of the same food. I like this brand of pizza. Is that becasue the taste is different or is that what we were trained to believe?

People are targeted by the

killijoy; Friday, August 17, 2007 - 19:15

People are targeted by the industries when they are incredibly young - that's why it's discouraged from letting babies and young toddlers watch too much TV or listen to too much radio. Once one is targeted by such companies, one will be targeted by a company for life. Wrapping it in a Mikky-D's wrapper only makes it special in the sense that young children see so many ads about how wonderful the food is, how popular and friendly and happy the advertising children look, the catchy tune, and the gimmick of a toy. Voila - instant childhood addiction. Even without such goodies as to seize the childhood imagination, the images and sayings linger.

"Eat these burgers, and you will be incredibly happy and popular," it resonates. "These burgers will change your life."

It's utterly mind over matter. If you took a dozen or so children from an Amish farm, you'd probably be told that they BOTH tasted gross, or they BOTH tasted equal, prettified packaging or no. They don't have to deal with all the hype of how wonderful it is; to them, it's something to be eaten, either way. What would happen if they were interested in such advertising when they were young too? Probably a similiar reaction to the rest of America.

Of course, it's not the population's fault that they can be sweept so easily away be pretty packages. We can just as easily blame it on the thousands of advertising agencies, the millionaires responsible for inserting that wonderful Mikky-D's "ba-da-ba-ba-ba" into our heads, the thousands of people who have to feed families just as the rest of us, and do it only for the chance to be well-prepared for in life. Or, maybe the blame lies in the huge, corporate industries who only want to hook you on a product forever so that they can end up rolling in your hard-earned dough? But then, they have families and futures to think on too.

So who really holds the fault?

Yeah, basically. As long as there are happy, smiling children advertising and the promise of an amazing time.

I think that EVERY school

Dungionman 3; Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 19:42

I think that EVERY school should trick kids into eating right, It works, but it may be cruel.......

As for the Fast-food for kids, let them eat what they want! They arent gunna die from anything but food poisioning, and they might loose a few teeth early.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People in stone houses should not throw glass.

I think it really is mind

Reiko Kitsune; Wednesday, October 3, 2007 - 21:35

I think it really is mind over matter issue, but I also think that the advertisers are exploiting little children's minds. I think that adds should be made for a bit older kids, not the young ones and I think that adds like that shouldn't be played on any networks that little kids are likely to watch allot, older kids is not so much a big deal because hopefully they are capable to make more independent decisions.

Reverse psychology doesn't

quamp; Friday, October 19, 2007 - 00:55

Reverse psychology doesn't always work. The thing parents realize the most is that kids are just as smart as they are, only a bit more ignorant of things. It might work once or twice, but not more than that.
