Lolita?

Plant's picture
Rant Plant - Monday, June 11, 2007 - 10:54

You know what I don't understand? The term "gothic lolita".
As far as I know "lolita" comes from "lolita complex" a sexual desire for underage girls, but not children, like early teens.
I've seen it used in several anime's, such as Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid and SHUFFLE! (both in Japanese).
So if anyone has a clue where the term "gothic lolita" comes from or exaclty what it means (I've heard conflicting definitions here in Oz) put your two cents in please.
PS. If there's anyone who can kinda tutor me in japanese through private messaging or email I'd be very grateful. I've been looking for a site to find a penpal through but I've only found japanese dating sites and mail-order brides =(

I can answer this one!

Hairballed Kat; Tuesday, June 12, 2007 - 00:11

I can answer this one!

Lolita is a novel by the famous Russian author Vladimir Nabokov, about an older French man who moves to America and enters a mutually exploitative relationship with a cruel and seductive but victimized twelve-year-old girl. It is a beautiful but disturbing book, and raised a lot of controversy and general hubbub when it came out. Thus, Lolita became the name for any adolescent girl who was considered seductive, and someone with a Lolita complex came to be a man who was attracted to pubescent girls.

However, Japanese Lolita Fashion is very non-sexual and rooted in a desire for innocence, and sort of means the opposite of the traditional meaning -- it is young women trying to look like innocent girls (innocent like Victorian porcelain dolls), instead of young girls trying to be seen as sexual adults.

Did that help?

Although lolita in hentai is a different story (I have very male friends who like anime), and I thought hentai was bad enough because in what I've seen of it the girl is usually being held down and often crying, but with underaged lookin girls...

Goth Loli

killijoy; Friday, June 15, 2007 - 16:35

Yes, Kat is absolutely right, and before that, I believe it was a midwives' tale, or something, in the Victorian period. It was basically Reason #633 why people didn't want females. All females, the Church deemed, were trying to practice their seduction on men and would thus make the men fall to the wayside of religion. Basically. That's where that term of lolita comes from.

"Gothic Lolita" is a whole different story. It's dressing up to become elegant while retaining your gothic look and maintaining a sense of dark innocence about the whole picture. It's a very interesting concept in fashion and art both. Goth-loli is also normally not used to be hentai-esque, so thus, you really need to keep in mind what true Goth Loli is when reading hentai. Hentai, remember, is for those that can't get any in the real world, so they must draw it. (Although I'm sure your friends and other hentai-readers are nice, and I really shouldn't be stereo-typing people. ...but you get my point.)

Hairballed Kat; Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 01:01

True, Killi, women have been hated by the Church since Eve, but how did the term originate from that time period and/or belief? I've never heard of it used before the novel.

Also, hentai is generally sickening. I think it's one of the worst, certainly one of the most misogynistic kinds of pr0n.

xXRed13Xx; Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 01:09

I'm not really into hentai, but I don't see anything wrong with it really, infact I think it is a good thing. A lot of hentai is basically fulfilling fantasies that can not or should not be fulfilled in real life. And personally I would prefer creepy guys got off on cartoons of girls being raped rather than actually going out and doing it.

Saying that, not all hentai is about bondage, rape, giant demon genitals or lightsabre erections (although lots of it is :D).
Some of it is just cartoon porn and I definitely don't see anything wrong with that, with hentai you can basically make a girl in the image you want, you can give her the perfect eyes, hair, curves etc.

And also I never knew what lolita meant, I always thought it was a type of girl like Hispanic or something :D

If its just erotica (posing and such, not actually sex) I can apreciate some hentai, though I think things that shouldn't be played out in real life shouldn't be played out on paper either.
Killijoy, your pretty spot on about my friend, although he's not a bad guy really.
I don't know what it is men don't like about women, maybe a lot of us just want them either chained to the stove or bed :(

An Explanation:

killijoy; Sunday, June 17, 2007 - 14:24

The midwives' tales, I'm sure, are much like the story - of course, as things get passed down, some things can be misinterpreted. The story I've been passed down is that Lolita was a little girl in France, England, or some place like that. Her mother was single at the time, and teaching her to seduce men. Then, her mother met a man that she was to become the fiancee of and secretly told Lolita to practice her arts on him. Lolita did so with relish, and made the poor man fall utterly head-over-heels. It became a huge scandal, as he was also a school-teacher. Finally, he found himself in prison, and Lolita (I believe) married another man.

The Church did use this story as a way to ward men away from the temptations from the female form. It was just another way to show that females were in deed a vessel for Satan and would do anything to seduce men. It was also the Church's reason (partly) to intimidate pregnant woman into having sons (even though females aren't the ones who control gender of offspring, either...). It's very interesting, really, world history is. Besides, if a woman was a vessel for Satan, why would she be stupid and show it off?

And Plant, I didn't mean to say anything rude against your friend. I'm just saying, generally, the people I've dealt with who read hentai non-stop generally can't get any.

I was agreeing with you, he's a good guy and an ok friend but he's not the type girls dig.
But maybe the church was onto something, have you ever heard girls talk about each other behind their backs? Its horrible! (But I DO think the church was wrong about women, note the last sentence of my previous reply)

quamp; Monday, June 18, 2007 - 23:33

The whole Lolita plot is actually much older than that; if I remember correctly, there was a story in ancient Egypt where a young woman from another country came in and tried to seduce a prince. She managed to meet him, but couldn't seduce him.
Although I don't watch a lot of hentai, I have seen a few of them that aren't as shamelessly exploitive as you make them out to be, Hairballed Kat.

That's not backstabbing... Friends are friends, you arn't always going to be happy with EVERYTHING that they do, but you don't want to insult them to their faces and cause problems. People talk about other people, saying good things and bad things it's not backstabbing it's just showing a bit of tact and not causing unnessacary problems.

Insulting your "friends" behind their back, about a problem they might not even know exists.... hmmmm, whats that called then?
I only insult my friends to their faces, "You can be a ****head sometimes" and so on, as opposed to my female friends, "god she's such a skank, she thinks the's hot but she isn't". True, but they'd never say it to her face.
If your going to insult someone, do it, don't wait 'till their not around then bag the **** out of them.

Joamette Gil; Wednesday, July 4, 2007 - 06:44

Not everything said behind a person's back is an insult. Talking to someone about how you think your friend is behaving selfishly lately isn't exactly mean-spirited. A lot of people do it because they're hoping for advice on how to handle the situation. It may be true that straight-forward honesty is admirable, but it isn't the only way to skin a cat - everyone isn't that confident.

Stereotypes are ugly things.

Either way, it's very possible to back-stab someone without having to go behind one's back.

If they

xXRed13Xx; Wednesday, July 4, 2007 - 11:40

If they really are your friends, then when you are talking about them when they are not around, whatever your saying isn't meant to be hugely insulting and mean. It is just talking about them.

If you are genuinely insulting them and being completely harsh i.e. "Bob is a fat retard I can't believe I actually hang out with him" then you arn't making for a very good friend, and I don't know the sort of people you hang out with, but friends I know don't do that.

Things will be said like...
"Bob stood me up at the last second the jackass"
"Bob never comes out anymore it's really annoying"
etc etc.
These things arn't backstabbing, they are things that have annoyed you about a person and you feel the need to talk about them.
If someone stands you up, they know they have stood you up and they will probably know your a bit annoyed, no point in insulting them to their face, what good does that do?

Hairballed Kat; Thursday, July 5, 2007 - 02:14

This is off-topic, but I agree with Red and Joey. If my friends get a little frustrated with me, I don't want them telling me off and calling me names to my face every single time. I don't really mind if they go to a mutual friend and do a little complaining about how annoying I can be, because I trust that if my friend had a real problem with me, aside from my slight personality flaws which they are generally (but not 24/7) willing to put up with, they would talk to me. That's how friendship works.

There can be a line crossed when talking about your friends, of course, but I don't think it's necessary for me to slap my friends in the face every time one of their flaws gets on my nerves a little.

xXRed13Xx; Thursday, July 5, 2007 - 11:32

Then to be honest they are probably not real friends. Alot of people will only be "friends" with someone because of what they can gain out of the relationship, or because it's convenient or because they used to be friends and they are just still in that groove. They arn't realy friends. And these would be the kind people who would b*tch about their "friends" and really be harsh about them.

Hmmm. What men and women do

killijoy; Saturday, July 7, 2007 - 22:33

Hmmm. What men and women do you hang out with, exactly, dear? Most of what I am hearing from you is how just WOMEN are at fault. How ALL WOMEN are back-stabbers, smily to the face and ruthless when the person's head is turned. I don't know, but I don't operate that way. I operate in a tactful way. When someone has a significantly slight issue with me that I don't feel I should rip into them about, I simply hold my tongue and tell a friend every thing that happened to the best of my ability. Then, we discuss how it may not be relevent to me, but something else that's going on. Solutions for the problem on what I did wrong are addressed and the subject is dropped.

Backstabbing is not like that. A back stabbing conversation may be:
P1: Hey that girl is fat!
P2: Yeah, she eats like a million cheeseburgers for dinner a day at MickyD's.
P1: I can't believe she turned down Rick!
P2: She is such a slut.

Instead, I believe most convos go:
P1: I got upset when Suzy Q told everyone about my boy problems.
P2: Geez. What did she do?
P1: She told everyone how he's cheating on me.
P2: She has no right. Why don't you try talking to him about it and say nothing about the rumors? That way you don't come off like the biznatch.
P1: Sounds good. Thank you!

Which sounds more like a type of backstabbing? Convo One or Convo Two?
If you don't get the difference, please don't persue the conversation. Thanks.

"Jake is annoying me at the moment he keeps canceling plans at the last minute so he can spend more time with his new friend."

"Jake is being such a f*cking pr*ck right now, he keeps standing me up to f*ck off with someone else or some sh*t, I can't believe I'm friends with him."
