Girl forced to walk with broken leg and no crutches

Story here

Warning: this story has a few things that may make some of the more sensitive people upset.

Quote:

TAMPA - Patricia Elalem said she couldn't believe her daughter's kneecap dislocated after what at first seemed like a minor injury.

Even more troubling to Elalem is what might have caused the injury to worsen. Elalem says a nurse at Walker Middle School in Odessa [FL] took away 13-year-old Amber's crutches last month, forcing the girl to walk in pain.

Yes, even though there were a few quick exams the school nurse could have done to determine whether or not she needed crutches, the nurse still took away her crutches.

Quote:
"I was floored," Elalem said. "You don't take medically prescribed treatment away from a child."

They did it all the time at my school. Once, a diabetic girl was sent to reform school for the rest of her academic life. The reason? She had sugar pills in her purse. Even though I had a doctor's note, I had to give my allergy medication to the school nurse, who often wasn't there when I needed it.

Quote:
There is no district policy requiring a doctor's note for crutches, but the district's supervisor of school health has issued an e-mail to principals stating students must produce a doctor's note to use crutches or a wheelchair, Cobbe said.

So if she had been paralyzed and came to school in a wheelchair, they would have dumped her on the floor. Lovely, isn't it?

You know, we seem to have become one nation under paranoia. The family will sue, of course. Naturally, this all could have been prevented, but someone didn't bother to take the time to do that.

This is another thing that bugs me. Of late, people seem to refuse to take the time to do the job right, or listen fully to explanations about motivtions for mistakes.

Of course. It's the true

killijoy; Tuesday, April 1, 2008 - 01:24

Of course. It's the true American way. We tend to do a half-*ssed job and look dumbfounded at the results. And until we start teaching better discipline and work ethic, it's not going to change any time soon.

Ah, yes. Finally someone who sees the flaws of this so called "Great Nation." Though if that trully is our standards we're not setting a good example...

Yes I have dreams, and fate seems to place me among others with dreams like mine.

Here's the reality. The US

Joamette Gil; Tuesday, April 1, 2008 - 02:33

Here's the reality. The US system is responsible for the very problems it tries to "fix." In order for there to be concrete solutions, the US would have to admit that it's doing something wrong. Rather than do that, we have become a nation of "band-aid solutions."

Yes.

My friend and I are starting a gang...we're calling it the 'Band-Aid Gang' because that tan/off-white color that you find on band-aids is the only one not yet taken by a real gang-and-gun gang! XDD

Sorry that was off topic, I actually agree with you Joey, I just had to add my own two stupid cents. Back on topic!!

WaterFaerie; Wednesday, April 2, 2008 - 19:05

That is ridiculous.
In my school last year, there was a tiff because the new principal was making a huge deal about students having cough drops. But then the administration told her to get a grip on herself and stop being a control freak. It was soo entertaining.

So my advice to you is just to be a sweet pickle and everything will turn out for you in life - everything.

That is just appalling....seriously...I feel sorry for American's...
your country is REALLY messed up...
(well there is a word I could use that would be better than 'messed' to describe it...but its inapproprate...*hint, hint*)

yea well I think some of that could be counted as insolence, but some things, like fixing the great depression persay.. What did you expect the "great nation" to do? We were a nation founded on Christian beleifs and if this nation was to be anything amounting to what it was created in the name of, what do you suppose they do, just let all of the shanty homes stay and the ghetos sweep the nation of - prosperity?- oops, nope, its not that is it.. hmmmmm oh yea thats right, its more along the lines of say opression..
But when President Hoover established the New Deal, he risked the debt of our country to save its confindes, there is a way that he planned to get the money back but russia I gues didnt feel the need to cooperate with everything our Country wanted them to do.
