almost 2 in 5 teens think plagiarism okay

quamp's picture
Rant quamp - Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 23:08

Story here

Quote:
Seven in 10 teens contacted for the annual Teen Ethics Survey, conducted by Junior Achievement and Deloitte & Touche USA, are confident they can make ethical decisions.

However, almost four in 10 of those teenagers say their personal success sometimes necessitates unethical behaviors like plagiarism, violence and stealing.

Maybe it's just me but this is disturbing. It's NEVER okay to plagiarize. It's NEVER okay to steal. I don't care how bad off you are. If you are down and out, there are charities that will help you. Your generation (for most of you) is really starting to disturb me.

Of course, in the realm of fanfiction, plagiarists usually steal the really bad stuff.

Quote:
Of the one in four students who sanction cheating, more than half say a personal desire to succeed is a justifiable rationale, and that number is higher for teens that feel overwhelming pressure to succeed.

When you cheat, you're only cheating yourself. Ever hear of Richard Nixon?
Of course, our wonderful president is setting such a shining example for this. [/sarcasm]

Cheating = suspension.
End Of Story.

So my advice to you is just to be a sweet pickle and everything will turn out for you in life - everything.

I agree

xXRed13Xx; Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - 14:28

I agree that cheating is wrong, but that saying "When you cheat you are only cheating yourself!" is such a crock of sh*t lol.

I agree. Ridiculous

I agree.
Ridiculous statement: Cheating is ok if you have to get 100% or else your dead grandmother will come from the dead and shove tuna up your nose until you are dead.

OK, fanfiction is very much

killijoy; Thursday, January 10, 2008 - 15:09

OK, fanfiction is very much not cheating. I understand that it can be viewed that way, especially because you are taking someone else's characters, but I think it's OK, as long as you have a different story. Plus, that would be more of an "Aww thank you" thing to me, then an "OMG I wi' kee you cos you tookee my charra...!"

But plagarism is WRONG. I am such a writer - I hate it when other people take my story lines and pretend they were the ones to come up with it. It's like, "Graargh!!" No one should do that.

Sorry about the vocabulary, I just passed this really hot guy in the hall, and I think my brain has permenantly turned to mush. =)

I can understand the

Hairballed Kat; Friday, January 11, 2008 - 02:19

I can understand the pressure... that doesn't excuse anyone from plagiarizing, but there is a LOT of pressure to succeed for some teens and that plus the "cruel world" attitude (you have to cheat to survive, etc) that a lot of people have makes teenagers willing to do unethical things in the face of failure. And once one student goes that far to get ahead, it creates an unfair advantage that spurs other students to cheat in order to level the playing field.

In short, the competitive school system is sick.

Pull down the future with the one you love.

The key here is to separate

Joamette Gil; Friday, January 11, 2008 - 20:20

The key here is to separate moral ideals from real life. Research shows that it is the children with higher brain capacities who will lie to their parents to get away with something and the less bright ones who tend to be honest 100% of the time.

You know what bothers me most?

The fact that our society has a tendency of pushing people into corners, of making stealing, cheating, and lying so necessary to survive.

That's not what I'm talking about. There are stories online that have several authors have claimed to have written. These are the EXACT SAME WORDS put online by several people.
Basically, the plaigarists take other people's fan fiction and claim it is their own.
That's not good. Especially when one considers that the stories that are stolen are just awful.

Here's an example of a plaigarized fan fiction I recently saw in the Beyblade fandom:

Quote:
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Yes, that's the entire story. Stick around for the next chapter, BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB.

Wow...

DreamingSoul; Sunday, January 20, 2008 - 20:53

I never really guessed that actions that could cause one to lose his freedom or life were seen as logical courses to take by some of teens... Youth really is wasted on the young... Some youths don't have the brains to conprehend the grave nature of consequences.

Yes I have dreams, and fate seems to place me among others with dreams like mine.

It also won't let me edit it either. :(

Just a question.. Why on

Kurenai Ichi; Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 16:58

Just a question.. Why on earth would someone steal something as stupid as AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB... unless they just thought it was halarious.. at any rate, it's rediculous.. And I wouldn't count something like that as plagerism because it is more along the lines of a rediculous joke.. That is the way I see it. However if I were to find my work plagerized I would be pissed, and thats why people get things copywrited, to protect their hard work. Though as alot of you have already said, things just shouldn't have to be that way.
