What Do Untrained Soldiers Do Best? Copy TV, of Course!

Untrained soldiers have claimed they have used torture techniques they've seen on television on prisoners in Iraq because...

Tony Lagouranis, a veteran U.S. Army interrogator who worked at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq wrote:
"We got an open-ended interrogation rule of engagement saying you can basically do whatever the hell you want. And so, in the absence of training, because we weren't trained how to torture, we turned to what we saw on television."

Just the fact that there's no oversight is an open invitation to torture. The government knows it's happening. They just don't care.

"And just like that, it was over... The last flames flickered and died amidst the rubble of an empire[.] As the smoke rose into the blackened sky, we realized that the world we had known was gone forever." - Eric "Doc" Griffin on the fall

Hell, kid. The government is encouraging it.

In the view expressed by the Justice Department memo, which differs from the view of the Army, physical torture "must be equivalent in intensity to the pain accompanying serious physical injury, such as organ failure, impairment of bodily function, or even death." For a cruel or inhuman psychological technique to rise to the level of mental torture, the Justice Department argued, the psychological harm must last "months or even years."

Basically they're saying if you don't cause organ failure or death (difference?!) or long-term psychological damage, it isn't torture. How kind of them to make that clear for us.
