Vandalism

Politics Sinn - Wednesday, April 18, 2007 - 00:56

Some Political vandals hit up one of the buildings at my current college (I'm transfering come Fall), and I thought I'd share their message with all you manga punks.

Guys had me in stitches with this one.

Anyway, what I basically wanted to ask was what you kids thought of the idea of vandalism as a valid form of personal expression. Personally, I see it as an exercise in freedom of speech and a form of artwork.

I like the first one. It makes complete and perfect sense.

Sigh...

quamp; Wednesday, April 18, 2007 - 21:25

While the message is important, the method of delivery is important too.
Vandalism really hurts us all. Your school has to pay the cost for cleaning up those pictures, and of course, will pass that cost onto you, the student body.

XDDD While I like looking

Caramel; Wednesday, April 18, 2007 - 23:05

XDDD

While I like looking at graffiti/vandalism/the TRUE voice of the students, it's not very legal. And yet, we have our freedom of expression. Doesn't that contradict somehow? Or is there a loophole?

Also, it's important what KIND of vandalism it is. For example, I would not be very supportive of students using a sledgehammer to smash the walls in. But, I kinda like this kind of vandalism. They have to make sure they don't get caught though.

Quamp, if it were up to me

Sinn; Wednesday, April 18, 2007 - 23:43

Quamp, if it were up to me they wouldn't clean it up at all. I hold the administration entirely responsible for the $12 spent on slapping a coat of paint over this - which is what they did. It's pathetic because anyone can tell that something was there, underneath the big, cobalt-blue splotch, but whatever.

But you're absolutely right - the medium is the message - and here it's a liberation of property, a transformation of the private into the public. It takes an entire wall and proclaims its universal ownership; rendering it a canvas for expression, not the private domain of only a select few. In that sense, vandalism can be seen as a revolutionary act.

At my school, this last

shadowmistress; Thursday, July 19, 2007 - 13:51

At my school, this last year, the seniors decided to get brilliant. They took some simple lighter fluid and burned a gigantic '07 in the beautiful front lawn of our campus. It has been months, and all they have succeeded in growing back is crabgrass. *evil laughs*
Also at my school, the tradition for graduation seniors is to T-P the hill that is the driveway up to the school. What's is awesome is that the administration KNOWS about it, and allow it. How awesome is that? There is just one catch. The seniors have to pick it up later (but somehow they got out of that this year???)
Sorry, back on track. Vandelism is all about the message and the art. Although these kids didn't use the art side, their message was clear. Yes, people have to pay for the damages, but it still gets the message across. Now, if it was something vulgar or inappropriate, i would uderstand, but this is just stating simple oppinions that they agree with and wish to show others.
I have done some vandalism during my life (although nothing on a public building) and it is about the art and the message, so i dont see anything really wrong with what they did. But they could help clean it up if you really want to bug them about it.

True, however...

quamp; Sunday, July 22, 2007 - 23:54

There are other ways to get this message across without having to wreck someone else's property. A cardboard sign taped there would have been just as effective and less damaging to the environment.

Then there's the argument of turning it around. How would you feel if someone painted the slogan "George W. Bush is right! Don't question him!" on the walls of your room? Doing this is the same principle.

I think if it's just an ugly

WaterFaerie; Monday, July 23, 2007 - 13:11

I think if it's just an ugly old wall and it's not someone's name or something, than vandalism is acceptable.

So my advice to you is just to be a sweet pickle and everything will turn out for you in life - everything.

Yea I agree with you on

Dungionman 3; Monday, July 23, 2007 - 13:28

Yea I agree with you on that, but also, I don't think a cardboard sign is the same and will get the message across as strong. Cardboard vandilisim is like....uh, Decaf-vandilisim, or diet-vandilisim: it's not the same. Not that I agree with wrecking a wall, but vandilism gets the frigging point across, cardboard gets taken down in the morning before anyone see's the message! Maby, I'm being a little stupid, but, you get the point I'm making.

Yeah, site's been acting stupid. Make sure to read the very first post on the front-page to find out how to contribute to the solution. ;)

As for links, I find that you can post them as long as you don't use the [ url = ] [ / url ] tags.
