I thought some of you might be interested in checking this out: a list of the top 100 most challenged books of 1990-2000, books that risked banishment.

I have read many of those books.

Is it even possible to ban books in America?

Unfortunately, it is

Joamette Gil; Sunday, January 14, 2007 - 22:17

It's not only possible; it's also legal.

Keep in mind that banishment does not mean the book is completely unavailable. Individual libraries or library systems are the culprits more often than not. On some occasions, the government steps in an bans books that they find to be "inconvenient" (such as when Can Such Things Be? by Ambrose Bierce was banned in 1918 when the US War Department told the American Library Association to remove books considered "pacifist", "disturbing", and "anti-war" from camp libraries).

What the constitution says

Joamette Gil; Sunday, January 14, 2007 - 22:31

What the constitution says and what actually goes on are two different stories entirely, I'm afraid. I guess the loophole in all of this is that, techinically, persons running a library have the right to choose what books to carry and which not to carry. Thus people who depend on these conservative libraries must suffer.

In any case, refusing to carry a book does not stop an author from expressing himself in one.

Joamette Gil; Sunday, January 14, 2007 - 22:48

You'll learn very soon (if your social studies teacher hasn't taught you this lesson already) that the founding fathers filled it with loopholes on purpose. Their initial intent was to make the Constitution a document that could be subjected to individual interpretation and that could be ammended to fit the desires of the majority for the good of an evolving society. Politicians today word their bills very vaguely in order to make certain that they themselves have ways of getting around them.

You're right; it shouldn't be that way. But it is.

Here's the sad part: most books get banned because citizens themselves fought for that banishment.

Reiko Kitsune; Monday, January 15, 2007 - 00:47

I see many of these books around. and I've read some of them, I can't imagaine why people would bann most of them,

Loop holes are only good if you're the one exploiting them.

Madcat; Monday, January 15, 2007 - 20:26

Wow. I read about four of those books in school as a class thing. I have to speculate it is a little odd that someone would want to ban something like Where's Waldo? by Martin Hanford or The Witches by Rohl Dahl. Ah well. Some peoples beliefs I guess..Don't want to corrupt our ten year olds with puzzle books and books about fictional witches.

Even your parents can be your worst enemies, it would seem.

Banning a book like Go Ask Alice should be considered child abuse.

DX Why, loopholes, WHY?! Why have you betrayed me??

*overly dramatic sob*

EDIT: I've read a lot of those, too. I guess I can understand why people wouldn't want children reading the Scary Stories series...because of the pictures. Jeez, once it was so scary I wouldn't even touch the book. O_o

But ban it? Why ban it? If you don't like it, don't read it. Plain and simple.

rabbitpiss; Tuesday, January 16, 2007 - 06:45

Those are banned? Then how come your stores still carry them then? I don't understand. Were there just a lot of speculation about banning them? Because if HP was banned, then there wouldn't be camping outside bookstore for the last release of the book anymore. God, I can't wait. The release date has been prophecised as the 7th of the 7th of the 7th people.

Stores can sell whatever

Joamette Gil; Tuesday, January 16, 2007 - 18:59

Stores can sell whatever they please. When a book gets banned, that means that a library (or many libraries) refuse to carry the title. People who depend on the public library near their homes to obtain books are left at the mercy of conservative mothers who right ridiculous letters of complaint.

quamp; Thursday, January 18, 2007 - 00:14

It can also mean that teachers are prohibited from using those books to teach kids. Kids also are not permitted to have them in school, use them for book reports, etc.
Admittedly many of them came after my time, but I have read some of them. It's sad when books that teach independent thinking and questioning of authority are supressed.

Haven't read Lord of the Flies, but when a person in my class suggested that we read it in class, my teacher suddenly looked nervous and hesitant. I wanna read!!

They're made a movie for "Brige to Terabithia" (I'm not sure if it's out yet, though). Can movies be banned? O_o

I don't think it's out yet. All I know for sure is that Disney's making it and they're taking the advice of LotR by filming in New Zealand.

That's a very good question. I'm actually not sure.
