Really it's the parents fault, that why they created ESRB. Stop buying grand theft auto form for your eight year olds!!!!!!!
Live Life With No Fear
I don't think so, really. If everyone who played games and that made them violent, most people out there would be killing everyone who looks at them.
--- Brilliant. --- Shameless plugging, hurray!
Maybe inherently violent kids play violent games...
The most important think I learned from psychology classes was that correlation is not causation. Just because two things go together (kids playing violent video games and acting violent in school) does not mean that one causes the other. Why doesn't anyone realize that?!
Pull down the future with the one you love. ~Television.
Ain't ad hoc grand?
Mayhaps it has to do with our predominantly Christian culture? Many of the religious right dislike such games to begin with, which might play a role in them being so quick to blame it for violence in their children. People love blaming things they hate--it gives them an excuse to hate it. It could also be that using games as a scapegoat keeps them from having to admit that they're parenting skills need some sprucing.
One possibly negative thing I do believe violent games contribute to is desensitization. The more of something you see, the more normal and unimpressive it begins to seem.
I've seen it happen, but only in EXTREME cases. And it could easily be attributed to other influences. One of my friends is addicted to WoW, and literally plays it 14 hours a day. He's become much more violent and he cusses constantly, which he never did before, not to mention that he's always tired and irritable because he's living on 3 hours of sleep. But I don't think the game is the cause of his behavior so much as the people he plays with and the lack of sleep. Sleep deprivation causes stress which he relases through irritation and a short temper, which turns into violence. And his friends cuss even more than he does on their Team Speak channel. I know that I didn't just start saying curse words on my own, I learned them from my friends and subconscously picked up the habit.
So, while it could be attributed to games, I don't really thing the game is the cause so much as the means for the change.
I've played Grand Theft Auto and I'm one of the nicest people you might ever meet XD I don't really think G.T.A. did anything to me. The only video game that acually had a real impact on my life was L.o.Z. and all I really do is want to get the triforce tattooed on my left hand, dye my hair blond, and get blue tinted contacts.
Plus, my little cousin has played G.T.A. since he's been like 5 (because my uncle is immature and still likes video games) and hes just fine. He has just a little temper though.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------- LIES!!! LIES AND FRUITCAKE!!!!
Everything depends on each individual's personality, basically.
Suddenly Jack Thompson comes to mind, I laughed so hard at what he did.
I don't think violent video games make people violent, in a way we do to ourselves.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I've never has a heart, Never know love.
Yet you expect me to care, to care about you.
Now you're staring at me, You stare at me as your love fades to grey.
What did you expect, Did you expectg me to love, love you with a heart I've never had?
I don't think video games make people violent, but I do think that naturally violent people may be influenced by violent acts, including those they see in games and on TV.
And on another note, WoW and video games in general are completely different... WoW is not a video game, it is the spawn of Satan. It eats people, and devours their souls (I really don't like WoW).
I have plenty of friends who played computer games a fairly healthy amount we were all avid gamers but for the most part no one had proper addictions. Then WoW came along, alot of these people no longer have social lives to speak of, I barely see them anymore and on top of that I can barely understand them anymore...
"WTB 5 RCoP, then I'm off to grind 45 with my Lock, I have a 62 BELF coming so basically being PWRD"
Seriously... what the hell are they saying :S
People play WoW and it's not just the game that effects them, it's a whole other world, only the people living in it are generally much more immature, swear alot more and don't tend to sleep or leave their houses... and being in that enviroment you start to become like that...
I strongly beleive that the WoW discs are made from crushed devil horns and demon poop. And when people agree to the terms and conditions and send off their monthly fees, they are actually sending off a little bit of their souls each month too...
(WoW sucks...)
I have been playing GTA since I was ten, listening to Rammstien and similer since I was 11. I have not been effected. They're using such things are a scapegoat for some childrens pure stupidity and the fact their parents use television/video games are a babysitter. Then they complain when they're child gets fxcked up.
{---} "And me I'm in my bedroom drawing in my notebook because my hand thinks I'm an artist but my heart knows I'm a poet It's just words they mean so little to me"- Saturday As Usual
Please write "f*cked," Cray. ;)
And that is one of my favorite quotes.
Oh my god if my friend heard what you said about WoW, he would like freeak out. He got pissed at me when I didn't know what it was and called me Noob for weeks!
Yep. Can you believe people dare to say "That's not what they do on TV/But on TV this and this happened/etc."? Then I berated them and they don't talk back. :3
Parents blame everyone other than themselves for what their child learns/does. They blame TV for curses, videogames for violence, internet for pr0n (not all parents do, but I know some.)...
Though my parents don't really blame anyone. Heck, they say sh*t in front of me and asked me what it meant when they first heard it 9So basically I taught them? Wow. Isn't it usually the parents?) O_o;
XD LOL that may be the stupidest thing I've read/heard/seen these past few weeks...
I read about some study they made, and they concluded that violent TV shows are more likely to affect you than violent video games. But I don't know *shrugs* You can make studies about anything really, and interpret results in biased ways.
Personally I find game addiction scarier. Like kids who drop out of school just so they can stay at home and play computer games!
I think most kids are able to tell the difference between real life and video games. Heck, if playing violent video games gets rid of all that pent up aggression, I say better unleash it in the virtual world rather than the real world!
~ Barking at the Moon ~
That reminds me of the introduction to the JTHM collection; it talks about how humans are animals who naturally feel agression and violent urges at times and that it's healthy to let such violent acts play out in your imagination for the sake of your own sanity.
Well, I can't realy say that GTA is any harm, I play GTA3 sometimes, and I'm actualy calmer. But as for my brother, that's a shampoo of a different brand. He gets realy-realy PO'd and starts yelling at the computor ant hitting me when I want to sharpen my pencil. (the sharpener's between tha printer and the monitor) My anger has actualy gone down when I'm payng attention to a medium of some kind. Is that weird? Whell, in closing, computor games have an effect that depends on your personality and luck.
People in stone houses should not throw glass.
....
I threw my Wii Remote at the Tv when I was losing at Baseball...
:P
DENISE, gets really pissed off at video games though, Miss Rip-out-the-gamecube-cables :P
Violent video games relieve my stress. There's just something about killing mythical 3-D beasts in an endless dungeon that calms the soul.
So my advice to you is just to be a sweet pickle and everything will turn out for you in life - everything.
Well, If your talking about WOW, (witch I doubt) I prefer Jeroids Landing for a good place to kick @$$. But you not talking about it, so I'll keep my mouth shut.
WoW :@ WoW is an evil invention designed by blizzard to suck out the souls of gamers... As soon as you buy it your soul is linked to the game, you stop going out, you stop talking about anything other than WoW, to anyone other than WoW players, your bank statements start saying nothing but blizzard fees...
Too many of my friends have been eaten by WoW, I went on a rescue mission into the game for 14 days and managed to bring back to of my friends, but others are hooked for life... and they try and get me hooked. BRAINWASHED I TELL YOU!!!
WoW is the satan of all games, and not in a good way. Not meaning to sound prejudice (although I obviously am) but if you play WoW you need to be put out of your misery and shot!!!
*cocks his magnum 6 shooter*
:O
That sounds cool!!!!
I'ma go buy it when I get a better computer!
That was DEFINITELY not the idea of my WoW induced rant... if you wish to never leave the house again and die infront of the computer because you become too addicted and lazy to move from your computer then go ahead and buy WoW, if not then go buy something decent.
SOMEONE STOLE MY JtHM QUOTE!!!
But it's true. If you're stupid enough to take everything in the world around you that is entertainment as a semi-religious way to conduct yourself, you shouldn't be around other people to foist it upon them!
Squee! was the sequel to JtHM, if anyone is interested, and it talks about the same things too. How everyone else in this world blames everyone else for the problems they themselves caused. If you are going out and buying your three-year-old a game station in the first place, you can't blame the manufacturer when your kid gets hooked.
Duh.
.:suzu-chan/killijoy/Joeys Cupcake:. .:"No time for goodbyes," he said, as he faded away. "It's hard to imagine, but one day you'll end up like me." Then he said, "If you want to stay alive, hold on for your life.":.
Good point.... fact is some people are more mature, and more self controlled than others...
Yes I have dreams, and fate seems to place me among others with dreams like mine.
You must be unhinged from the start. Games like GTA I think are TARGETED at people who would like to do things like that in RL. Games like WoW and Halo (in halo you're a 7 foot tall super human in a suit of armour) and others that aren't even close to realistic couldn't turn anybody violent.
I have a tendency to wear my mind on my sleeve, I have a history of losing my shirt...
HEY! DON'T EVER INSULT ABUS WARCRAFT-DOR IN FRON UH' ME.
Sorry, I felt like quoting.
BUT STILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Warcraft is the bes thing ever made by nerds!
Us Blood-Elves, Tauren, Undead, Dwarves and so forth need to kill stuff in Jeroid's landing, The Moor, etc, we need to duel! We need to find two professions! WE NEED TO FIGHT AND TALK ONLINE WITH THE SAME THING!
You get the idea! The only reason I don't play anymore, is kuz my brother sold his to me for a bag of cotton candy and didn't say there was no time on it! Plus my dad doesn't play and I had some caricters on that. Also, my step mom doesn't play either!
Alas, I am forced to stick with NosTale! It's OK, but I hate some of the things in it:
The way that you get a leven 12 or so pet and have to start over from lvl!
Moving with the mouse rather than A, W, D, and S.
Shut up, you're gonna make me wanna play it! >.< I'm an RP, and RTS nerd among other things, but I have never played WOWC( World Of War Craft). Reason being: I don't want to scare people... Besides I play rated M games all the time, and even play First person shooters as a kid, and you don't see me going nuts...
And to headshot 4 players in a row from the opposite end of Narrows, then tear through the entire enemy team with a laser sword, die, then start all over again (not meaning to boast but I'm rather good). But I'm not going to go doing anything like that in RL. It's all just another thing we can pin the blame on and pretend humans aren't inherently violent animals.
Yeah I guess so... But what about when we were younger...
You know the type, they shoot a little plastic suction dart, the shaft has a quarter cut out so it fits into the barrel (the barrel has a notch to stop anything but the dart fitting in). People in Australia will remember they were banned here because some idiot kid filed down a pencil to fit in the gun, put it in his mouth, shot it and killed himself (accidentally, he was just stupid). Still, really shooting people with fake guns didn't turn me violent so why would killing digital people with a virtual gun make them so?
That's because you have good sense... Not everyone is dare I say... blessed with it...
Dude! I never said you should play it, I said don't go around insultin' it an' saying it's evil and the devil an' all that! Just because we kill stuff and duel doesn't make it evil!
He's entitled to his opinion, Carolyn. No one mentioned the devil.
Sorry for not clarifying, what I mean to say was, "You make it sound like so much fun."
If by fun you mean not moving from your swivel chair ever again, then yes it's a regular laugh riot. I have found through experience and loss of friends that it is easier to cure cancer than WoW addiction. I am actually witholding the rage I feel towards this game, I never thought it was humanly possible to hate a game this much! Many people I know who used to have social lives now tell me... "No sorry I can't come out tonight/this week/for the next fortnight, my guild has some important raids coming up which I can't miss" Disgustingly addictive pay to play game...
I don't want to get on my soap box, and spill my arrogance, as I rant about what humans what call being social is actually slowly killing them. The fornicating, drinking, smoking, and going to wild parties that involve all of the above. If that's all a social life truly is, then I'd be content to sit in front of my computer screen raiding other fictional nations, and conquering other clans.( If I didn't have a dream to fulfill.) But I'm not completely blind, I still have one good eye... I understand that there are those who have a social life that doesn't involve killing yourself with the government's poisons, but rather bettering themselves as human beings,( Or rather something greater, due to my messed up perception.) But they're too small in number for me to take a permenate note of.
Lots of people do stupid things that cause them harm, but I don't see how wasting your life (and eye-sight) on a video game is any better than having wild s/ex. At least the latter is more natural... actually, that's pretty much just an opinion. Having wild s/ex all the time (if done safely and responsibly) isn't a certifiably "bad" thing at all. o.0
I'm 18 in 4 months and haven't got to 2nd base. Truth be told it's half because I'm not going to take advantage of some intoxicated and/or under-age and/or "emotional" (irrational due to being dumped, losing a friend etc) girl. But still... Now to my real point. I'm new to WoW, I've only had it for a month but my friends have all had it for over a year. They still leave the house and go to parties etc, nothing much changed. WoW's a topic for conversation like any other, no more common than anime, manga, girls or school/work. The only thing that did change was one of my friends didn't have time to download me anime any more :'( Curse that lanky....
"To each his own" thankfully...I see now that my perception of existence wasn't wrong... As for videogames making kids violent, well as I may have stated they don't grasp the concept of fiction, and reality...
