Ageism/Adultism

WaterFaerie's picture
Politics WaterFaerie - Friday, April 27, 2007 - 20:09

Alright.

Ageism/Adultism is Assuming things or having a stereotype about people because of age.

Your parents may have had that when you were a kid. You may remember fiascos like this; "Don't go near that, you'll just break it."....."I'm older, I know best." (when their wrong).....Grabbing things from your hand or pinching your cheeks without respecting your free will of who touches you and when.

You may roll your cheeks, but maybe teenagers should reflect and see if people stereotype you because you're a teenager, if people pretend that you can't make a decision for yourself because of age.

Go to youthrights.org if you want some more info. This really is a problem.

There is aslo an inspirational 30-something page story that is very inspiring to read.

I hate ageism. My parents ASSUME they're smarter than me because I'm a teenager and they are like 30.
Yet, I know more than them.

Yep yep I show them.

Joamette Gil; Saturday, April 28, 2007 - 00:42

Hmm. Assuming is never a wise thing to do; however, everyone should know when to realize that someone is wiser than they about a given subject, whether that person is younger or older than you. I know a lot of things that my parents don't, but that doesn't mean that I have as much life experience than they do or can spin them a tale about "life" and how things go that they didn't live through themselves already.

It's never good to treat people based on stereotypes, but it's also necessary for a person to acknowledge that stereotypes always have a basis (sometimes really stupid ones and sometimes well-grounded ones). Generalities are alright to dabble in as long we remember that each person is an individual and we should take the time to treat everyone as such, or else not deal with them at all.

YES!! *dances happily* I didn't know the proper word, but I've suffered from it long enough!

Not from my parents, though. They acknowledge that I can be smarter than them (Then they say they know things I don't), so it's mostly teachers, people trying to sell you stuff on the phone, etc.

This doesn't only happen with adults, though. Many of my classmates think they are superior over the sixth grade and down. This happens every time they graduate...>_> *Sigh*

I hate agism - in any form.

killijoy; Monday, April 30, 2007 - 16:15

I hate agism - in any form. From thinking that a teenager doesn't know what they're talking about and that they don't have a well-formed opinion to thinking that all old people are crazy.

Here's a thought: why don't we stop sterotyping and stop being all b*tchy? Hmmm? Why don't we learn that differences are a good thing that we should accept??

killijoy; Saturday, May 5, 2007 - 20:48

I also love the "because you're a teenager, you are too melodramatic and over-react."

Maybe I do. But probably not.

"Because you're a teenager, you can't experiance love."

Wrong there. Unless "real love" feels different than what I've felt. But gee, to me, it feels the same.

"Because you're a teenager, you know nothing of the world."

Wrong again. Because I'm a teenager, I can make informed decisions about the world. Because I'm a teenager, I can sit back and say, "I don't know, this seems that way to me, instead of the way you're thinking." Because I'm a teenager, people don't tend to notice me as much, and I pick up more tidbits about the humanity is. Point proven in the "AAARRRGG!" forum.

Maybe if I said, "Because you're older, you're more stupid" they'd shut up. But I can't. Because if I did, I'd be going on par with them, and really, is that how you win a battle like this one?

Again, anything to lord over someone else and look "special". (Please refer to aforementioned topic.)

Joamette Gil; Sunday, May 6, 2007 - 05:42

While I'm thrilled with the level of intelligence a lot of you display at your age(s), I find it hard to condemn adults for the practice of ageism. The amount of stupid teenagers and children I have encountered in my life ("stupid" meaning "think they know a lot, but really don't know up from left") outnumber you guys 1,000,000 to 1.

Alright, maybe 100 to 1.

Then again, the case is similar with adults. I suppose I know more intelligent adults than intelligent youths because the adults have been around longer and have had more of a chance to soak up what's good in the air. Plus, I have a hard time taking a lot of younger people seriously because I myself have thought I was right and completely justified before only to grow a few years older and realize how idiotic I was being at the time.

We can't assume someone's dumb because they're young, but we also can't assume that someone's wrong just because they're not us.

Anyway, Killi, your mental capacity seems pretty impressive to me. ;)

Killi pwns everyone! :DD

I've met plenty of stupid kids, too. Actually, I think most of the people in my class right now are "stupid". Or maybe it's just me.

We shouldn't assume anything, period. v_v Assuming gets us nowhere, if it doesn't make things worst.

Joamette Gil; Sunday, May 6, 2007 - 14:11

Actually, Killi, come to think of it, why aren't you busy making your own "as told by me" essay collection or starting an advice 'zine or something? I'd read something like that written the way I'm sure you'd write it. Share your ideas with those 100 stupid kids corresponding to your 1 on-track mind! :D

killijoy; Sunday, May 6, 2007 - 19:50

XD

Actually, I started a blog on Livejournal. You'll find it if you type in angellius.livejournal.com I'm going to try to battle the forces of stupidity with thoughts and things on different subjects (love, humanity, etc.) Lately, everything that's been my opinion has been slightly biting but rather informative, even for myself, to read.

XD And thank you for the compliments!! I feel luffled! However, it's not my mental capacity so much as my ability to be able to read situations and people rather well, take those "readings," compare them with other people's "readings," and make a "majority-assumption" (I guess we could call it) about how humanity works on certain levels. However, the "readings" do change over time, but lately I've been pretty dead on.

And that's enough for tooting my own horn.... XD

And remember: Assuming makes an "*ss" out of "u" and "me."
