What the new Manga Punk is all about and how you can help shape it.

General Discussion Rachel the Great - Thursday, January 5, 2006 - 21:25

So, MP is up. We don't want be elitist like *some* communities, and yet we still want to attract comickers and manga lovers of all ages. This should be the birthplace of Amerimanga and the cradle of the future of comics.

I have already spoken with Joey about starting the web's biggest, most comprehensive guide to comicking right here on this site. We have the power and modules to do it, and I think it would help bring people to us who need that information. No more buying crappy books that don't tell you much at Walden!

What else?

Ah, the joys of Barnes and Nobles...

Sinn; Wednesday, January 11, 2006 - 19:00

Speaking of B&N, there's this great collection of letters that the CrimethInc Ex-Worker's Collective has bundled into a book printed for-cost called Evasion. I was reading through it the other day, and I came across an entire section dedicated to one Straight-edge Vegan Punk's cross-country journey that was entirely funded by shoplifting from none other than Barnes and Nobles. B&N has a "no chase" policy (last I heard), and their security measures are pitiful at best. Inside each book there's a 2X2 white square with a spiral pattern attatched. Holding it to the light reveals a small, semi-flexible circuit within. With paperbacks, this tag is often stuffed somewhere within the text of the book, though this isn't always the case. For hardbacks, look for the tag to be attatched to the inside of the back cover (often in one of the corners). To conceal one's removal of the little bastards, simply scratch at the tag absentmindedly as you read a random page from somewhere towards the middle of the book. Allow the pages to flop over your hand as you scratch to better conceal your efforts. As with any sort of ... "liberation" be sure to 1) check for cameras, and 2)do this in an empty aisle. One tactic to aid in concealing one's actions is to crouch down and hunch over the lower shelves; this effectively blocks any camera's line of sight. Also, I shouldn't have to add this, but we all make stupid mistakes, so let me remind you to NEVER WALK PAST THE CASHIERS WITH THE ITEMS YOU JUST STOLE*!! Not without sticking them beneath a coat at least.
*unless you're "left-handing."

I understand if you disagree with theft for moral reasons, and I don't wish to shove my conceptions of good and evil down anyone's throat; though I think they're unusual enough to warrant explanation. I don't support stealing from public facilities like libraries or small, independent institutions. Taking from these actually hurts someone (i.e. the public or the family that owns the small store), while stealing from the massive corporations that own and control the vast majority of our society's resources is an act of revolution, albeit extremely petty. Still, such penny-ante shite deprograms us of the belief that "the authorities" - whether they be store managers, police, politicians, deities, etc. - are omnipotent and all-knowing. Honestly, it's a liberating experience that helps you realize that you actually can do anything. That being said, I feel it's also right because of the oppressive heirarchy of capitalism, but's that's another rant altogether. Finally, when stealing from Corporate bookstores in particular understand that: 1) the publisher has already been paid, so they lose nothing and 2) if those books aren't sold, the store will rip off the cover and send it to the publisher claiming that the book/comic/magazine was damaged, demanding a full refund while throwing the rest of the perfectly good book/comic/magazine out, which rips off the author and their publisher...
Which brings me to my last point in this rant, if YOU WANT FREE BOOKS WITHOUT STEALING check the dumpsters behind the store. These are often filled with the still-readable, coverless husks that the store uses to get MASSIVE, illegitamite(sp?) refunds from publishing companies. Jump in and start diggin' there's treasure to be had. You can even re-cover the books with a hand-made or photoshopped cover and a bit of binding glue. These books can then be used for you r own enlightenment, then given away to friends, children, and all other manners of the less fortunate. Thus redistributing the wealth a little more evenly, creating equality out of passive repression...

mmmyup... that's my little story

Your philosophy makes alot

Joamette Gil; Wednesday, January 11, 2006 - 22:56

Your philosophy makes alot of sense from one perspective; but then it's hard to differentiate between the deprived and the cheap. We have a tendency as a species to look out for ourselves regardless of how it reflects upon our moral fiber--or lack there of. But then who defines morality anyway? All I'm saying is that if you go after what you want at all costs, then are you really any different than the capitalists you're supposedly defying? The majority of us would do the same thing the system would if we were a part of it, despite what we may say and do as members of the broke class. It's because we're broke that we know any better.

Your info's definitely something to keep in mind, though. Lol.

Damn Straight!

Sinn; Thursday, January 12, 2006 - 21:16

Joey, you rock! One of the points that I SHOULD have mentioned back there, which you caught on to, is the need to do these actions for the right reasons. One shouldn't steal simply out of material desire - that's just buying into the consumerism that brings nothing but emptiness to our lives, though it doesn't help the system perpetuate. When our lives revolve around the crap we have, then there's no point to living save the acquisition of petty material goods. The book I mentioned earlier - EVASION - actually discussed how such materialism can be spawned from dumpstering and shoplifting, as well as illustrating how kids combat that materialism while continuing to live off of the scraps of the system. The sudden abundance of food and goods that comes from such tactics can instill exactly the sentiments we're trying to combat! Motivation at this point can break down into something that occurs in order to procure some external object/service; thus life becomes "driven by extrinsic motivations" (that is, centered around sensations, rewards, and feelings that exist OUTSIDE the self). This takes away from the point of the whole process - to live without contributing to a system based on heirarchy, authority, greed, and oppression - which is the intrinsic motivation (as it originates from one's own views, beliefs, and dreams). Generally, the preferred methods to battle such invading taint and keep one's theft and scavenging pure and good include: setting up a "Food Not Bombs" project and give out dumpstered food to those in need (remember, even those who dumpster need food, so tuck in to that vacuum-sealed, unexpired cesar salad you found inside that Trader Joe's dumpster - tastes like freedom!), refusing to aid those simply dumpstering for profit (which is why I ain't letting in those cheap, prepskool slaggin' corporate wannabes at my college in on this stoof),
and only taking what one "needs;" though this last one raises such questions whether the social bonding that comes from ripping, watching and giving away a DVD could be considered a "need." Some songs have kept me going when I was considering suicide, so if you steal a cd from Best Buy, rip it, and give it away, does the potential emotional support constitute "need?" Also, the freely-taken-freely-given use of a stolen good could also be seen as a positive alternative to the money-based system currently employed. In fact, wikipedia and CrimethInc. both employ such tactics as their products are either free or simply cover the costs of production, and their copyright allows any and all reproduction, even plagarism, so long as no profits are garnered from the resulting works... but yeah, this is a topic more suited for the rants section, methinks... (i like "methinks" ;) )

You're a smart cookie, you remind me of a Yippie, along the lines of Steal This Book and such... *frowns* Although I could never steal from a store (even Hot Topic, even though they practically beg to be shoplifted) I may actually start dumpster-diving, especially for books and at fancy food stores like Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, looking for pre-packaged goodies (how I loathe them and their delicious mustards).

Joamette Gil; Friday, January 13, 2006 - 03:50

The whole bootlegging thing does make even me feel hypocritical at times...but then, I somehow can't feel bad about stealing emotions, inspiration, or messages. That's what I use anime and music for in any case. It's a more complex "need" than food or drink, but a need nonetheless, I suppose.

And muah. I made you write two essays in a row! I'm so on a roll. >3

The few facts I've managed to pry...

Sinn; Friday, January 13, 2006 - 05:23

out of my mother's past are that: 1)She was at the Democratic convention in '68 when the cops got caught going apeshite on national television; and 2) she was a Yippie. The way she evades any questions about Abbie Hoffman seems to imply that she knew him, but I can't be certain... Figures she never let me in on this stoof until long after my formative years (*sigh*). Ah well, C'est la vie. So, yeah, instead all I got was my father's conservatism and some glints of truth from my an uncle, still, with my childhood infected with patriotism it was simply pearls before swine. Things change though, and plagues fall before the medecines of the mind...

"Backed up against a wall, the animal makes his final stance, he spits and growls and shows his teeth, he's a foriegner in his own land! When there's no where left to run - You're a rebel! No more battles can be won - You're a Rebel! Stands out there with his pride, and fights with no one on his side - You're a rebel!" Iron Cross, "You're a Rebel" from Live for Now!
Grab those torches friends, Rome won't burn itself down!

Well, I might be able to a review or two now and then. It depends if I have the time or not.
(Although much of what I read is stuff the people around here may not be interested in.)
As for the IBM & clones vs. mac debate, it really depends on what you're using it for. Macs are best for graphic-intensive work. IBM & clones are best for number crunching and word processing. I use a HP pavillion. Technically, Macs are PC, as PC stands for personal computer.
As for the dumpster diving debate, there is an anime store near where I live, and they have a huge stock of manga. I generally am allowed to thumb through some of the titles.

Walden is a subsidiary of Borders, much like Borders Express. It is found only in shopping malls, never as an independent store, such as ordinary Borders. I don't know where exactly they are and aren't, but I can tell you that they're all over the central plains. I don't know about East Coast. But basically, it has the largest selection of manga of any chain book store; at least 4 times more than Barnes and Noble, and slightly more than Borders. The thing I like about them is that, while the books cost a dollar or two more, they tend to ship more frequently. (Every Thursday to be exact.)
