Quote of the Day

General Discussion Joamette Gil - Wednesday, November 21, 2007 - 19:48

"I hate the idea of causes, and if I had to choose between betraying my country and betraying my friend, I hope I should have the guts to betray my country." -E. M. Forster

I'm interested in seeing your responses to this quote. Do you agree with it? Disagree with it? Like it? Dislike it? Does it remind you of anything that's going on in the world today or that has happened before?

Just, you know, throw out your thoughts on it. :)

Look Its Nichole; Thursday, November 22, 2007 - 02:23

I would hope that I would choose friend before country, but it all depends on the situation.

I am glad I live in America, but I won't die for my country.

Care to elaborate upon a situation in which you would choose country over friendship? I'm curious. :)

Look Its Nichole; Thursday, November 22, 2007 - 03:29

Well, if I feel my friend is wrong it what they did I would choose my country. Because while I don't love the US, I'm not going to side with my friend if they want to kill a government official. I know enough to know that if my friend wants to do that, they aren't worth it anyway.

It depends on the severity of the situation.
God, I dodn't know.
If betraying my contry involved killing a mass of people...
No no no. I couldn't do anything to my friend either.

It's hard to betray friends...but if it is a choice of the world as we know it and my friend...

I think I choose the world.

Plant; Thursday, November 22, 2007 - 05:46

Like is it... Handing over a US nuclear weapon to terrorist is exchange for your friends life? Or maybe going to a function for a political party which supports comunism with a friend?
PS. Is there still and American Comunist party? I reckon it's a good idea on paper but it's doomed to become corrupt.

Communism is a great idea on paper!

It just never works out like it should...

And I think there may still my communists in America, because we do have freedom to believe what we want.

But is there a communist PARTY?

Plant; Thursday, November 22, 2007 - 10:02

I think there's a very small one in Australia but I don't really know.
I studied Marx and communist Russia for a little while. The only thing I didn't like about Marx is that he believed
1: That cummunism could only work if the previous government had been overthrown in a violent revolution, and
2: It was imperative that a dictator hold power until things are sorted and then hand over power VOLENTARILY once a senate thing had been asembled. Yeah, THAT'll work...

Communism

xXRed13Xx; Thursday, November 22, 2007 - 13:52

Communism would work fine if we were mindless, emotionless drones... but we are human, so we naturally suffer from greed, jealousy etc. Plus in order for it to work at all, you really have to get every single person in every single country in the world to become communist.

Joamette Gil; Thursday, November 22, 2007 - 18:42

Goodness, there are plenty of communists running around in the U.S. :P

Just for the record, this quote was used to introduce a novel called The Killer Angels, which deals with the events of the Civil War and the theme of warring against your fellow brothers and sisters, your countrymen - which was more important: your loyalty to your government (the people you're taking orders from when defending "your country") or the people you love and share the land with (the people that actually compose "your country")?

WaterFaerie; Thursday, November 22, 2007 - 22:10

I feel country is a thing in which someone should be proud of but I would not die for it unless I was saving lives.
I would also die for a best friend.
Indeed a tricky question...
And I am sorry if this is flaming to someone who is communist/agreeing with them but;
Jane Fonda - American traitor and B*TCH

So my advice to you is just to be a sweet pickle and everything will turn out for you in life - everything.

killijoy; Wednesday, January 2, 2008 - 19:38

Honestly, I would always choose my friend over my country. Always. Well, unless millions of civilians were going to be burned alive, or something equally as horrible unless my friend got turned in, then I'd turn her in and find a way to sneak her out - save millions and my friend, all at the same time.

To be honest, I'm a bit of an anrchist, although it could never work. But it'd be a nice, you know? Like, an honorable thing to have all the people in a country/world live on an undefined code and have no need for laws or a government at all. Although, obviously it couldn't happen because we as a global society are much too greedy, jealous, enraged, etc. - we'd have to be perfect to achieve such a high level of un-government. Unfortunately, imperfection is what makes us human. It's a lovely thought though.
