I'm callin' it quits ladies, and gents...

DreamingSoul's picture
General Discussion DreamingSoul - Monday, March 31, 2008 - 20:56

Well I've been sending out submissions for about 11 months, and even though it's only been only eight submissions, I'm thinking of just forgoing the method of looking for a publisher, and just move on to either self-publishing, or just wait, and see where the winds carries me like always. Reason being: Out of all eight submissions I only got two response, and it was a responses that I hoped for... But other than that, no responses. And this after I repeately ask in each letter "Please reply as soon as possible." It's getting irritatting, and I hate waiting, so I'mma quit...

Well I have at least 6 submissions I wanted to send out. So I'm going to send those out, and if I don't get any replies, then I'm going to quit sending out stuff, and wait...

Yes I have dreams, and fate seems to place me among others with dreams like mine.

Don't quit- I know they take

WaterFaerie; Monday, March 31, 2008 - 22:52

Don't quit- I know they take a long time to get back to people (mine took about 4 months) but they really are considering whatever you gave to them (the publishing companies). Don't give up! Persistance pervails in the long run!

Okay... I'm not being truthful...

DreamingSoul; Monday, March 31, 2008 - 23:48

Okay, Imma quit lying to myself... MY STUFF SUCKS! XP Besides, I've heard what happens in how your submissions may get overlooked, and never viewed. I figure that's been happening... So even if I get the mailing procedures right, my submissions will still be overlooked. How do I know this? Simple... There's obviously some bigger plan that's suppose to unfold later on in my life, and I'm taking the wrong approach...

If that's how you feel about

killijoy; Tuesday, April 1, 2008 - 00:38

If that's how you feel about it...I'm sorry. I quit liked your stuff. But you're right, everything happens for a reason. Good luck on your reason!

Yeah it's a family secret...

DreamingSoul; Tuesday, April 1, 2008 - 00:49

Yeah it's a family secret... Though through this secret I won't be able to publish my current stories because they tarnish the image... So yeah... Destiny has me in shackles...

Patience, young grasshopper...

quamp; Tuesday, April 1, 2008 - 01:29

I had been trying to get published for over seven years before I was finally accepted. It's not just how good you are; it's also who you know. One time I showed a story to an editor at a comic book convention, and he said:

Quote:
Yea, you're good, but I don't know you, so go away.

One way to do this is go to anime conventions. I see people all the time going around to the artists and asking for critiques on their work. I've given one or two as well. If you can come, the next big one in Texas is A-Kon May 30-June 1 in Dallas. In addition, There is CAPE, a free con (it has a mixture of anime and non-anime in it) held at Zeus comics on Free Comic Book Day. (That's May 3rd this year.) There's also Animatrix in Kileen (July), San Japan in San Antonio (August,) Dallas Animefest (September,) Onicon (Houston in October) and many more.
Also, if you're still in art school, I recommend going to the Art Institute of Dallas. A lot of the good artists from this area went there.

Another little secret that companies won't tell you is this: They say they take submissions, but don't actually do so. Why? They want your business. They feel that if they tell you they won't take your work, then you won't buy their products.

You list in your influences Fred Perry. Have you tried submitting for the Gold Digger Swimsuit or annual? I've heard submissions are down a lot this year. Sure, they don't pay a lot, but they do allow you to pimp your site. That will get people coming to see your work.

I tried hunting down your artwork, but you seem to have removed it already. I know this can be daunting; I've often wanted to quit myself on my trek. However, don't quit until you've exhausted every avenue of reaching your goal.

In looking at your original fiction, I say you do have a lot of potential, but the little semantics are getting in the way of telling a good story. I recommend reading some more about how to write fiction before trying again.

You shouldnt quit o_o
Also I agree with Quamp, submitting to the GD annual is a very good idea ^_^ its been awhile since I had something in one (mostly because I've been seriously behind on reading the comic and seriously lacked ideas for pinups ect. )

Just keep in mind that J.K.

Anime Punk Joey; Saturday, April 12, 2008 - 01:08

Just keep in mind that J.K. Rowling was outright rejected by 5 different publishers when she first tried to find a publisher for Harry Potter... no matter how good/marketable your story is, the other trick is finding a publisher who believes in it.

Hell, Gone With the Wind was rejected 18 times before it was finally published....

On the other hand, I don't really see the harm in trying out for some anthologies or with going ahead with self-publishing. Either way, you're gaining valuable experience in your field - and when is that ever bad? ;p

Okay...

DreamingSoul; Friday, April 18, 2008 - 06:06

Wow Quamp, you're made of pretty tough stuff if you can get rejected like that, and still keep going. Besides I think publishers worry too much,( not that their worries aren't unfounded with the way alot of people are.) But me, I'm still going to read their material if I get rejected... And as for submitting to "Gold Digger Swimsuit" or "annual?" I'd have no such luck... And here's the reason why. I mean Antarctic Press, just rejected "High School Guardian." what makes you think they'd take one of my fan made comics?

Also, I have to work on the days of "Free Comic Book Day,"( Which is a friggn' drag, man! >.<) and A-kon,( Another drag, because I just made a pair of keyblades a few weeks ago...) And even though the thought of going to Houston, and San Antonio for San Japan, and Houston for Onicon, they're too far away. Not that I wouldn't mind the road trip, I'd love to travel that far, but I'm stuck with a "stay at home family," and I'd need a really convincing reason for going other than "I'm going to advertise my comics, and search for publishers."
Also, I'll be going to a community college in the fall... So the art institute will have to wait... And that also excludes advertising my comics at the conventions in the fall too.

@ Nella

That was rather spiteful of you... And I really don't see the point in submitting fan work right now... It's really not going to get me where I desire to be...

@ Anime Punk Joey

I've got a question do I look like any of those authors to you? They got lucky...

That's my point. No offense,

Anime Punk Joey; Friday, April 18, 2008 - 19:08

That's my point. No offense, but if Margaret Mitchell had such a tough time getting published, how can you (a lesser writer) expect to get published any faster? No one on this board is a Margaret Mitchell, and yet there are those among us who have gotten published; they certainly didn't achieve that by giving up.

If you've lost faith in yourself, I'm really sorry. That's a shame. No one is "meant" to be or do anything: the level you achieve will be tantamount to the work (and often struggle) that you put in.

ROFL

DreamingSoul; Saturday, April 19, 2008 - 05:54

*Laughs* That is so true, and truth be told we're meant to do that which we consider our purpose. I believe writting, and comic creating is my purpose, why? Because I have the skills for it. If I wasn't meant to be a writer, I wouldn't have this " Child-like imagination," as I so often like to call it because of how artistic comic creators, and or story writers can be percieved as childish for their vivid imaginations,( Or maybe that's just me.) But yeah, I ain't given up, I'm too stubborn t'quit...

Come on, you should not quit

Kurenai Ichi; Saturday, April 19, 2008 - 12:30

Come on, you should not quit something that is your passion! Ive been preaching this all year! If your not making money now, dont worry it will come to you, and if it's not the money your worried about ( which I would be if it were a career i'd insue) then get a side job X)

But on topic, you realy should get an editor, a promising one who is interested in getting you published. And as for your art work, I remember you asking me to look at it and I said it was like DBZ, maybe that is your inspiration? In any case, anatomy training is the key, since you have inagination you can do it!

Yes...

DreamingSoul; Saturday, April 19, 2008 - 17:11

Yes Akira Toriyama was an influence on me... Though I am using other designs for my characters, as well as working on their anatomy. I've even developed my own style for drawning Mecha, Though it's not as cool as other styles of mecha that I've seen. >.< ( Tested it out yesterday while I was at work, and production was rather slow...)

Well, it's understandable

quamp; Friday, May 9, 2008 - 01:13

Well, it's understandable that you would quit art - it's about on par with my level (and I haven't had an art lesson since sixth grade.) However, you really should decide what do to with your life, and go for it full throttle.

DreamingSoul; Friday, May 9, 2008 - 15:17

Oh, I intend to do just that... Imma go for broke basically. I'm still gonna write, and do manga... I just need to find a freakin' publisher who deems me worthy... Oh, and Here's Some Of My Art Most of it's digital, and the only traditional piece is the "Disturbed Sketch."
