"How could I possiably pay attention to a book with no pictures in it," Alice says.

General Discussion petersjm - Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 12:21

Meaning no insult to you guys I am wondering if you would enjoy a shojo manga with no pictures in it. You see I am not an artist as far as drawing goes. I'm just a writer. I wanted my story to be drawn as a shojo manga but I just don't see that happening anytime soon. Anyways, I'm just wondering if you guys would like reading a thouand words instead of just a single panel drawing.

Look Its Nichole; Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 12:46

It would really just be a short novel. And if you are going to write it like a novel you may want to make it longer. Because half of a comic is the pictures explaining where the characters are and stuff.

That's a paradox dear. Manga

Joamette Gil; Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 13:07

That's a paradox dear. Manga means "comic." A comic has pictures. No pictures means no comic.

A novela is what you want to write. I say go for it. ;)

I believe there is a Chibi Vampire manga and then there is a Chibi Vampire novel.

There's a current trend where publishers are translating and bringing over Japanese novels. Some Anime and Manga actually were first written as novels and then adapted into Anime and Manga.

Personally I've enjoyed the novels for Slayers, Boggiepop Phantom, and Vampire Hunter D. I have and plan on reading the novels for Kamikaze Girls, Scrapped Princess, and Battle Royale.

Sometimes the novels can further expand and explore things in your favorite Anime/Manga story and also it's good to see the source material and get what the writer originally intended. Sometimes from novel, to manga, and then anime, different creators can put their own spin on the source material.

OOhh... Battle Royale. Heard it was a good film. Must watch it someday.

Nope, I wouldn't read it if you were going to package it as manga but it had no illustration. Should be called what Joey said instead.

You don't understand

petersjm; Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 00:21

You people sooo don't understand what I was trying to say. But perhaps Joey is correct. I should just call it a romance novel. At least, until I can find an artist willing to draw the shojo manga version of my story.

I don't like calling it a romance novel, however because it is sooo not one of those cheesie and cheap pieces of c***p that white trash women read because their husbands are a bunch of fat and drunk losers who wouldn't have a clue how to be loving and romantic if even a women taught them how. What it is is everything I love about shojo mangas. All the various dramas two people have to deal with when they are young and in love like in Marmalade Boy. The loser boy somehow managing to get not just one girl but at least half a dozen of them to fall in love with him like in Love Hina, Tenchi Muyo, Maburaho, Maid Team, Negima, DearS, and I know there are several others but I can't think of them right now, d**n it. The love/hate relationships between a boy and girl who obviously are in love with each other but to stubborn and annoying to admit it like in Inuyasha and Ranma 1/2. How some girl helps some hopeless romantic get the girl he is in love with like in Chobits, DearS, Oh My Goddess, and Video Girl Ai but ends up with her instead. And of course let us not forget the best part about pretty much every manga and anime out there. The half naked hotties, the perverts, and the various hilarious "accidental" encounters and ass kickings of these two most hated/beloved enemies/lovers.

Anyways, the point is that yes my book is a novel since it has no pictures but the theme/genre of it will always be shojo manga, the greatest of all romantic literature!

Yet again, watch you

Joamette Gil; Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 02:39

Yet again, watch your language, please. Some people have school filters to deal with when trying to come here, and profanity on the site certainly doesn't help them any.

Anyway, back to the topic.

My dear Peter, "manga" is not a genre. It's a medium. You cannot simply redefine terms willy-nilly because you can't draw. A novella (which simply means "short novel," and a romantic novel doesn't necessarilly have to fall into the category of smut) would do just as well. In all honesty, I have gotten a thousand times more out of reading a novel than I ever have from reading a comic book.

Johnny likes your words

johnny_punk; Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 06:18

Johnny thinks words are powerfull, Davinci would say that pictures are powerful too... look at Picasso Gernica or Heronomus Bosch visions of hell... Look at the iconorgaphy of the sacred institutions and the naturists images that invision gia herself... power, drama, emotion and learning, we can have both, we need it all...

Joamette Gil; Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 13:12

You're right, Johnny. I've just never seen any remotely powerful images in a comic book. If any of you have, please inform me of the titles--I want to believe comics can contain as much substance as a novel.

Hmm. Maybe we just have the wrong people in the comics biz?

CatChewer; Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 19:14

I don't know, some comics are pretty deep too. I think it all depends really. Maybe we do have the wrong people in the comics biz :D

I'm not really understanding your point petersjm. I mean, a comic without pictures isn't a comic right o_O? You seem to already have a story in mind. Have you written it already?
The fact that it's a comic or not doesn't change the story itself, just how it's told. Like Joey said, manga is a medium.

Sorry dear, but you're

EpsilonZero; Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 06:21

Sorry dear, but you're writing romance, and the sad, stereotypes come with the turf. As a comic artist, I have to deal with people complaining that my characters aren't effeminate, emotional, or gay enough because it's what some people have come to expect of manga-esque comics. Because I choose to tell stories through comics, I am banned from having two male characters get within 3 feet of each other, thanks to the yaoi fangirls! And, since you can't draw, you are writing a (presumably) romantic novela. Too bad for you, that means dealing with textual porn. We each have our demons, so suck it up and learn to rise above them.

HOW DARE U! WE R NOT "WHITE TRASH"! AND WE DON'T READ ROMANCES FROME WISHING THAT CRAP! I may not read that BS, but I M writing a mostly-romantic book! And it is NOT for losers who don't know how to pick a good husband who need help with everything like you described!
