Friendship Online

General Discussion psychobabe13 - Thursday, March 6, 2008 - 23:44

Can people form solid, long lasting friendships online? I refer to a forum topic by someone (sorry, i can't remember your name!) asking where all her friends were from. Opinions? It seems like when you meet someone on the bus and you probably never see them again.

Studies show that 92% of teens would stop breathing if the Aberzombie & Bitch Company said it wasn't cool. Add this to you're sig if you're part of the 8% that would be laughing your ass off.

Sure you can

xXRed13Xx; Friday, March 7, 2008 - 00:04

Sure you can, I've met plenty of people online that I have known for years now, and several of them I have met in real life. To be honest the ones that I have met in real life I am no longer as close to as I was when we were purely online, because people tend to be different online and in real life. If you get on well enough and have enough in common you can definitely form strong friendships/relationships.

Me too. This is one of my first communication experiences online, so I was just ... pondering, I think is the word I want. My mom is like "No communication! Their all pedophiles!"
BS, In my opinion.

Lol. I've been forgotren

Ren-chancrusade; Friday, March 7, 2008 - 02:25

This is also my first real contact with people online, which is why I was curious as to where everyone was from (hence my forum topic). I think online friendships can last provided that people stay active on the site.

Red, how did you end up meeting the said people? By accident or on purpose? That would be kinda cool (though highly improbable for me) to run into one of you guys.

I'm actually romantically involved with someone I met on this very site. So... you can pretty much gather my view of the matter. :)

xXRed13Xx; Friday, March 7, 2008 - 11:01

No it was on purpose :) would be pretty crazy if I bumped into someone from online by accident, and even crazier if I even recognized them :D

So that's a strong solid NO from you then Jo?

Usually

xXRed13Xx; Friday, March 7, 2008 - 22:32

Usually playful banter and insults with you would be most enjoyable... but when you bring my pants into it? That is taking it one step too far... and I feel you should right a handwritten, heartfelt apology to my pants!

What kind of pants are they?

psychobabe13; Friday, March 7, 2008 - 23:13

What kind of pants are they? If they're dockers. they don't deserve an apology.

Hmm well I'm English, so technically my "pants" are my boxers... which would be right now some very fetching black "playboy" boxers... comfy too!

My mother is right. Boys

psychobabe13; Friday, March 7, 2008 - 23:32

My mother is right. Boys don't mature until they turn 25. They're permanently stuck in the 7th grade. *roll eyes*

I'll have you know that I have the maturity of AT LEAST a 9th grader... (I don't actually know what age that is, how do american school grades work?)

But no your mother is wrong, most boys never mature :)
You get the ones who mature super early, out of necessity or because they are just strange... and then you get the average guy, who loves video games, laughs at fart jokes and finds it funny when people get hurt for ever and ever and ever...

Speaking of which I think I'll go watch stupid people hurt themselves on youtube!

I'm a girl and I like that (except for fart jokes...eww.) Also, american grading system works the way you thought. Unless you're my cousin and go to a British School in america.

Kurenai Ichi; Saturday, March 8, 2008 - 21:14

I've found that if you communicate too much online, your social skills in real life tend to fall short of your usual standard. lol or they just deminish entirely, not a good way to go.

The only problem I've dealt

Hairballed Kat; Sunday, March 9, 2008 - 22:52

The only problem I've dealt with having online friends is when I mention them to my in-person friends, who ask me how I know them, and I have to explain "yeah, she lives halfway across the country... >.> we met on a message board." It's a little dorky.

xXRed13Xx; Sunday, March 9, 2008 - 22:59

Yeah tell me about it lol, when I tell most of my friends that I only know such and such a person online, they give me funny looks and act like it doesn't really count... and that I am just sad for having "friends" online and that they arn't really friends they are just random people online!

Joamette Gil; Sunday, March 9, 2008 - 23:11

Because, you know, not being able to see or hear them means they don't really exist! They're magical little faeries (without thoughts or feelings, might I add!) who float around inside your sad, sad, anti-social little head - you poor, pathetic, friendless thing, you. xD

psychobabe13; Tuesday, March 11, 2008 - 21:48

I like the faeries idea. And by the way, my social skills were already nonexistent, so not much change there.
