David, Comics, and A-Kon

General Discussion David Doub - Tuesday, April 8, 2008 - 16:02

I was meaning to do more with the site but then I've gotten more and more on my plate, so I've slacked on helping with Mangapunk and I'm sorry about that.

Now what is eating up my time, well first there's my comic. Yes I'm still working on it but we're on the last chapter so it's close to done. If you want to the latest art on that you can go to - http://jolene-h.deviantart.com/ and if you do look please give feedback on the art because all artist can use feedback.

Also I'm doing more and more at A-Kon. Here's a prime example of the stuff they got me doing, A-Kon is going for the Guinness Record - Largest Gathering of people dressed as Games Characters. So I'm the lucky one who gets to run that and tell people that "No sitting in a cardboard box like Snake from Metal Gear does not count as a costume".
More on that at -
http://www.a-kon.com/bm/Attractions/a-kon-goes-for-the-guinness-book-record.shtml

Now to make it up to the site for not participating as much, I was thinking I could do a series of articles about an inside view of A-Kon, but it feels self serving, off topic, and I don't know if there's interest in it.

So ultimately I'm just saying Hey to everyone and trying to be more active. I know I talked with Joey about adding more content to the site, and I do have a review coming at least :)

a-kon

Ren-chancrusade; Tuesday, April 8, 2008 - 20:05

I'm intresed in reading about A-kon. I've never really been to a convention before and am still on the fence about going to one, so articles like that would be rather interesting to me.

Well Ren-chancrusade, as a veteran of many comic conventions, I can say that people either love going to them or hate them. A-Kon tends to be more crowded than most other conventions due to its size. They have the run of the hotel and convention floor and usually it ends up being too much.
I'm still going though. I really can't afford to miss it.

Honestly what I've seen is most people's favorite convention is their first convention. No matter be it a small local con or a huge national con, whatever is your first will tend to stick with you. I think it has something to do with the fact that for your first con there's nothing really to compare it to. Sure you can read about panels and showing and a dealers room, but once you're in a con and surrounded by anime and manga and people that share the same passion about it, it's good feeling.

So yeah, nothing beats your first convention.

Well...

David, as George Bush put it, I must "respectfully disagree" with you on that point.

My first convention was one in 1998 in Dallas. It wasn't that well organized, and it was mostly long lines and getting nowhere. Some of the people they promised didn't show up. However, I've been to several since then that were much better.
I know others in this same situation too.

Well since my data is purely anecdotal, that's very possible. Also I've only noticed this in more recent years. I honestly can't remember my first con, it was either a Dallas Fantasy Fair (comic), A-Kon, or a Star Trek convention by Creation Entertainment. I will say that all 3 cons ran in different ways (an not just in content).
