1 in 4 teenagers have an STD

quamp's picture
General Discussion quamp - Tuesday, March 11, 2008 - 23:43

Story here

Quote:
CHICAGO - At least one in four teenage American girls has a sexually transmitted disease, suggests a first-of-its-kind federal study that startled some adolescent-health experts.

Quote:
Some doctors said the numbers might be a reflection of both abstinence-only sex education and teens' own sense of invulnerabilty. Because some sexually transmitted infections can cause infertility and cancer, U.S. health officials called for better screening, vaccination and prevention.

Education about things wouldn't hurt either.

Quote:
Only about half of the girls in the study acknowledged having sex. Some teens define sex as only intercourse, yet other types of intimate behavior including oral sex can spread some diseases.

Among those who admitted having sex, the rate was even more disturbing — 40 percent had an STD.

Well, considering how much of our society is focused upon sex, this isn't too surprising. It is very disappointing, however. Teens have a tendency to think "this won't happen to me." Then it does.

Most STD's...

Plant; Wednesday, March 12, 2008 - 08:18

(now officially known as STI'S, I for infection, not D for Disease) aren't spead solely by sexual interaction, the worst of them can be passed on just by sharing a water-bottle.
Shouldn't it be "have or have had"? 1 in 4 having an STI at this very moment is very disturbing, but if it's just have had one in the past or have one now, that's not so bad.
What girls have to remember is that while protection is every-ones business, most guys think sex with a condom on isn't REALLY sex, so make him wear a glove. And you CAN get an STI from giving a girl oral sax so remember dental dams.

I've never heard of an STD, particularly a severe one, that can be transmitted by sharing drinks. Are you thinking of type 1 herpes, which usually causes cold sores on the mouth?

Meningitis can be spread through the mouth. I am not sure if it is an STD but it can be spread through close contact, kissing, huggin, sex, w/e.

So my advice to you is just to be a sweet pickle and everything will turn out for you in life - everything.

iloverevenge153; Wednesday, March 12, 2008 - 23:29

You can get STDs from sharing drinks?
Oh my. I share my drinks with Everyone! I thought all you could get was Mono. ;_;
Now that I think of it, I shared my juice with 3 people today.
Oh dear. D;

I'm terrified of getting an STD. I went straightedge because of that stuff.

xXRed13Xx; Thursday, March 13, 2008 - 00:07

I got scared when I found out that you don't necasserily have to have had sex/intercourse/etc to have an STD and that people are actually born as carriers or with dormant STDs and symptoms...

The first 2 girls I went out with and slept with were virgins and went on the pill so I didn't think anything of not using a condom... then when I was told they could be carriers even though they were virgins... :O scary stuff!!!

I'm kind of scared to get tested aswell, just in case I do have something, what would I do then :|

No. Generally, if you get a disease from a drink, that means it is not an STD, because STD stands for Sexually Transmitted Disease. If it isn't predominantly spread through sexual contact, but by something more common like saliva, skin, or airborne contact, it's by definition not an STD. You can get a lot of diseases from sharing drinks, including mono, meningitis, and herpes simplex 1 a.k.a. cold sores (which can be transmitted to the privates, but only by direct contact with the privates!)

Please guys, don't get hysterical.

AIDS of course is spread with every bodily fluid.

Plant; Thursday, March 13, 2008 - 03:43

Hepititis B is spead in all bodily fluids if I remember correctly (A I'm not sure of and C can only be spread by blood to blood contact, I gotta check myself out for that). Herpes (although considered different diseases depending on whether at your mouth or genitals) CAN be spread from genitals to mouth, mouth to mouth and mouth back to genitals again (that's why I mentioned dental dams and condoms).
I know a girl, she told me once "I don't use condoms because all my boyfriends are virgins". Well, quess who's pregnant?
And remember, it's officially STI's now, and no person has ever technically died of AIDS (it's a cold or common infection that actually kills you).

Plant I couldn't really be bothered to correct you before, but your statement about them now being called STIs is incorrect.
It's not that STDs are now called STIs, it's that STDs and STIs are technically different.

I also used them incorrectly in my last post mainly out of laziness, but and STD is a VD that is active and showing symptoms, an STI is a broader sense of the word and can also be a VD that is dormant ie if someone is a carrier.

Some STDs can be spread by saliva, sweat etc (although unless you are very unlucky it would normally take like a bucket of saliva ^^) while VDs only known as STIs are 99% only transferred by sexual contact or blood.

And as for your friend... learn to use the pill? But she still should of been using condoms :)

I'm not sure about America,

Plant; Thursday, March 13, 2008 - 16:26

But the term STD is no longer in existance in Australia, one of the many reasons being that there's a certain stigma that goes with disease that infection doesn't have.

Most people in the US get

Hairballed Kat; Thursday, March 13, 2008 - 19:30

Most people in the US get vaccinated for hep B. I find it odd that there's so much rabble rousing about young girls getting the HPV vaccine, since getting the hep B vaccine when I was young certainly didn't make me think to be promiscuous. I didn't find out that it's an STD until recently (it is spread through sexual contact, dirty needles, and sometimes sharing things like razor blades); when I got the shot they only told me it was a liver disease.

Like Red said, some STD's are spread by bodily fluid, but it is more difficult to pass most STD's by saliva, sweat, etc. so I'd say the chances of getting an STD from sharing drinks are nil. Also, while traces of HIV can be found in bodily fluids such as saliva and tears, there are NO recorded infections from those alone.

YAY!

Plant; Friday, March 14, 2008 - 00:15

You'd be surprised how many people don't believe me when I say HPV is an STI (the same that causes genital warts in fact).
Australians get Hep B and a dozen others (most of which I can't spell) as teenagers and since last year girls 14 and over get the HPV vaccine (which is BS since while men can't develope cervical cancer, HPV definatly doesn't help them, and girls do have sex before 14 I'm afraid).

Well

xXRed13Xx; Friday, March 14, 2008 - 02:11

Well I have no idea about what goes on in Australia, but in the rest of the world simply put, STD means a VD with visible symptoms whereas an STI can be a VD where the symptoms are not or are not YET visible.

And HPV isn't one disease... it means Human Papilloma Viruses and it is the term for a group of like 1-200 diseases (only a few of them cause genital warts)... and it's (or they are) not technically an STI, it's a sexually transmissible disease, meaning it CAN be transmitted through sexual contact but that's not the main way it is contracted. (Like Meningitis.)
(I had to teach sex ed at my school for 6th form teaching week :D)

Well, from what I've heard, not all people are like that. Some of us have tracable amounts of blood in the saliva. Some don't. I'm not really sure what the criteria for that is, though.

killijoy; Friday, March 14, 2008 - 13:40

Plant, honey, you're wrong. AIDS can only be spread by four of the bodily fluids: semen, blood, breast milk, and (as it is rudely put, but I don't really klnow the correct term for it, sorry) secretion of the female. Tears and sweat and all of the other types of bodily fluids carry the HIV/AIDs virus, but you cannot catch it from them. As Kat said, it is MUCH harder to spread such a disease through sweat and tears and saliva.

And I wouldn't freak out about this too badly, either. I understand that it means that as Americans we are a very sex-induced culture. (I've heard some people refer to this generation as the Orgy-neration, which is funny to me. It's a funny name!) But things that were taboo only fifty years ago (kissing in public, for example, or talking about politics in front of any one) are now done and discussed at ease, and much worse actions and discussions are also taking place, even at the dinner table! It's a culture that only can be discribed as a "twenty-first century" kind of attitude, and it isn't about to go away any time soon.

As for catching an STD? First of all, whether or not you partake in intercourse is your decision. But be smart about it! Use a condom, and take birth control! Also, get as many vaccinations that you can lay your hands on to PREVENT STDs. Practice safe sex. Get regular check-ups from your doctor to ensure you don't have an infection of such a nature. Don't have it unless you are absolutely, positutely, no bars-hold ready to do it. If you have even the slightest doubts in your mind, then don't do it. It's not like you can't have intercourse, ever. Just, you should want to practice it with the utmost safety - for you and your partner. That's my view on it, at least.

And, as my parting line, I just have this to say: if one in four girls have an STD, than how many guys have one? Did they do that study yet?

To be honest...

xXRed13Xx; Monday, March 17, 2008 - 22:04

To be honest I don't really rate protection during oral... unless you really don't trust the person and have reason to think they might have something...
Personally I find that oral with a condom or a femi-dom is beyond pointless...
I have never had any problems (as far as I know :D) but obviously it would be safer with protection.
Small side point aswell, unless you special order them or go to a special place, oral-condoms always come in like one size, and that size is not very big... so even more discomfort :) Obviously I've never tried on a femi-dom so not sure about those :D

Even this approach, I think, is a little lax. I think you're safe, Nichole, but any unprotected contact with someone who has had previous contact with someone puts you at risk. For example, even though I'm pretty certain that I'm clear of any infections, my ex-boyfriend cheated on me (with slutty guys, without a condom... I know, he's a jerk) so even though my current boyfriend trusts me and I trust him, I want to get tested before we do anything oral. Unless you can trace your history back so that there is absolutely no physical possibility of transferring anything, and you trust that your significant other can do the same, it's probably a good idea to either get tested or use protection.

Testing is great for committed relationships. Do it once, do it together (then go out on a date, yes?), and when the results come back you're worry-free, in terms of conscience and fiddling with condoms. (Envision a disclaimer about still needing pregnancy protection here)

I am 100% sure my boyfriend has no sexual contact before me. I know I have never had any sexual contact before him.

And I am very responsible when it comes to my health. I would never consider something that would endanger me, or someone I care about and trust.
