I need some help in seeking a publisher

DreamingSoul's picture
Help! DreamingSoul - Wednesday, June 25, 2008 - 06:49

Okay I know many of you are familiar with the plot of my story, Princess Of The Damned and well I've been submitting it to alot of publishers recently, only to get rejected. And upon thinking of the type of work the publishers I've been submitting it to represent, I began to wonder what genre does Princess Of The Damned represent? I mean there's a religious nature about in seeing that Luciami seeks God's grace. There's an action/adventure feel seeing as how she's traveling the world, while battling demons and misgiuded priests. There's of course the Psychic/Supernatural feel with Luciami's encounters of psychics, ghosts, demons, and other paranormals.
And lastly there's the gothic/occult/fantasy, in the fact that Luciami tends to act gothic here and there, not to mention her friend Anna who's a gothic emo. Plus there are occult activities,(Stereotypical occult activities, if you will. Kind of like what may be seen in HellBoy) that occur while occultists persue Luciami, and as she unwilling fulfills her destiny of opening a portal to Hell.

So since some of you are already published, or are more familiar with this than I am, which kind of publishers should I go after? Or should it be all of thee above?

Finished pages are honestly

David Doub; Sunday, June 29, 2008 - 04:14

Finished pages are honestly a big clincher for a lot publishers. It shows what the product will actually look like and it will show that you can actually see a project through to a finished form. On this end of comic creation you typically have to assemble your own art team.

Now if you're talking about book publishers and not comic book publishers, then I don't know.

Hm.... Problem....

DreamingSoul; Sunday, June 29, 2008 - 19:13

There's a problem with that though.... Alot of publishers I submit Princess Of The Damned to only request queries, and synopsis. And if they like what's in the query and synopsis, they request to see the manuscript... So in essence I can't show manuscript unless it's requested.

Well you may need to show a previous work history. Short stories in Magazines and in anthologies. Enter into writing contests. Show that you can do the work.

You know it's not that simple....

DreamingSoul; Monday, June 30, 2008 - 17:45

I don't have short stories in magazines or anthologies. From what I understand I'd get a hard time trying that too. And you know that winning a writing contest isn't that simple.... My entry is one out of thousands, it would literally take a god given miracle for me to win...

Google comic book publishers. You could possibly find some on the internet. You should investigate before you submit any art work. There are all kinds of muchers who would love to get their hands on some fresh ideas.

Don't remind me... I worry

DreamingSoul; Monday, July 14, 2008 - 17:23

Don't remind me... I worry about that everytime I submit a story... Which almost makes it pointless, because I think at times... "Oh what if my story was stolen from me? All that hard work... WASTED! >.< I'm surprised there are even published authors on this site...

Maybe you need to look into

David Doub; Monday, July 14, 2008 - 18:21

Maybe you need to look into self publishing then? Rachel used self publishing when she started out. With all the Print-On-Demand stuff online now days it's fairly easy and cheap to become a self publisher. That and it help teaches you about all sides of the comic industry.

You basically go to a site

David Doub; Tuesday, July 15, 2008 - 16:30

You basically go to a site like Comixpress, Ka-Blam, Lulu, Dimestore Productions, or Cafepress. They all have various print on demand services. Most have little to no setup fees and you only pay for what you print. So if you sold your book purely online you could print only what you sold.

Well they say when you do

David Doub; Friday, August 15, 2008 - 13:34

Well they say when you do submit you comic pitches to a publisher to make sure you know you know enough about the publisher to know if it's a good fit. An easy example is submitting you comic to Marvel wouldn't work because they don't do creator owned stuff. So I think that's what they mean when they say when they say talk to a fantasy publisher, as in a publisher that has and does print fantasy comics so they're interested in the material.

Or they could have meant to actually send you pitch to book publishers who do fantasy because a lot of them are now looking to get into Graphic Novels. Don't be shy to ask such companies because the worse they can do is say no.

I would suggest just talking to publishers first and see what they're looking for (or if they're looking at all). At the very least you'll establish a relationship with the publisher so when you do send a pitch to them, they'll be more inclined to give your pitch a closer look because they know who you are.

Oh... Okay... thanks, though

DreamingSoul; Sunday, August 17, 2008 - 18:56

Oh... Okay... thanks, though the only time I did that was with Baker Mark when asking about submitting a graphic novel series of the psychic/supernatural genre, but what if you say is true,( And it most likely is.) Then the only way that I'd be able to submit Princess Of The Damned to a psychic/supernatural publisher is if it were a graphic novel... But I always thought is was the story itself that was the problem. (I mean who wants to represent a novel where the Anti-Christ defies, and kills Lucifer? (If I misinterpreted your words, I'm sorry :p) But I'mma try that among other things.

David Doub; Monday, August 18, 2008 - 01:14

You can submit Princess of the Damned as a prose story, but that's outside of my experince. But I have found that Graphic Novels are a lot more "hot" than traditional novels are currently.

BTW don't worry about the story itself. I was just at a sci-fi/fantasy book con and you wouldn't believe all the different types of stories they had. From very dark to very silly, so your story shouldn't be that much of a problem. What a lot of publisher (comic or book) are more concerned with is the quality of the story and not it's topic.

DreamingSoul; Monday, August 18, 2008 - 16:04

Then that shouldn't be a problem... However it somehow is. I don't send my manuscript with many of the submissions, but for those that I have, it seems it wasn't suitable for them... I've even submitted to publishers of both Gothic, and Fantasy literature due to the gothic intent in the story, but even the those two turned me down. Though I can understand if the material is in need of more proof reading, and what I sent was in serious need of proof reading because it looked as if a special person may have written it. I honestly am lead to believe that there is no one out there who would represent a story that deals with a demon rebelling against, and hunting its own kind. (Though there is a story like that already, and yes I'm referring to HellBoy which was one of the three major influences on this story. :p) I almost wanted to think that there wasn't a literary publisher who wouldn't represent such an outlandish tale, until I came across the subgenre of Apocalyptic Fiction just a few minutes ago. And seeing as how Princess OF The Damned is more or less an Apocalyptic story dealing with Demons and Religion, I would indeed be able to find a publisher in at least that category. I just need to get it licensed first, so as to protect my property and hard work, but I need a state I.D. first... :p

Okay, a couple of things

David Doub; Monday, August 18, 2008 - 20:26

Okay, a couple of things about this and forgive me if I’m not as delicate about it as I could be.

1. Sending cold submissions (as in the publisher is not expecting one from you) is a hit and miss proposition. They may get it and just don’t respond to it for a long while, reject it without replying, or don’t even take submissions anymore. Sometimes it’s best to start up a simple relationship with an editor so they’re aware of you and you’re aware of what they’re looking for. You can do this by talking to them via e-mail, at shows, on forums. Oni is a publisher that’s a great example of this. The only way they take any submissions is from people they actually know either be it from conventions or online. So they don’t take submissions from anyone, but they work with talent they’re familiar with in one form or another.
2. Your work may not be polished enough to where a publisher would be interested because of skill and/or experience. Sometimes a publisher will be nice and point out issues they see in a story, but typically they’re too busy to help. I think you focus too much on the subject of your story and I really don’t think that would be a problem for most publishers as long as it was a well executed story. I’ve only really seen the brief overview of your story, and while that seems fine in of itself, it really doesn’t tell me much about the story’s quality and style. It’s like reading the ingredients for a candy bar to see if I’d want to eat. In most cases I wouldn’t.

A side note, you do seem to focus on certain details than you really should. Like worrying about getting the work copyrighted. Yes that can be a concern, but I think you need to worry more about your work than the copyright at this point. You really need about working on your story.

DreamingSoul; Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 14:59

Well that could explain why I didn't get responses from many publishers I submitted. And you do hold a valid point, so here's The Manuscript of chapters 1 through 4. and of course I'm focused on getting this story licensed because all the improvement I make won't mean a thing if it's stolen from me by some underhanded publisher!

@ Joshua

Thanks again Josh.
