Ew! Realism! Burn it! BURN IT!!!

Art Critique Joamette Gil - Thursday, February 8, 2007 - 03:02

Or criticize it. Either one. :D

I drew this a couple weeks ago when the realism bug bit me. It's a drawing of my little sister. I don't have any photos of her to give you guys to compare with, but please criticize it based on the actual technique. Please and thank you! :)

Ah, and kindly excuse the lines. Inspiration strikes at the oddest times (and the oddest times are chock-full of lined paper). o_o

Look Its Nichole; Thursday, February 8, 2007 - 03:06

I like it! You can totally feel motion in it. That's one of my issues my drawings looks so stiff.

The only thing I can think of is that the tank top looks really thick...but it's hard to say, because I don't know what it's supposed to look like.

Now please critique mine. XD

Joamette Gil; Thursday, February 8, 2007 - 18:38

Steph: Keep at it! :D

Nazi: She does look older than she should. I think perhaps the contours on her face are a bit too defined, giving the effect of wrinkles? I dunno. I do know many people thought it was supposed to be a self-portrait, so I know I at least got the family resemblance down.

CatChewer; Thursday, February 8, 2007 - 21:16

Maybe we're all so used to cute little manga characters so it takes a while to adjust :D

I agree with Nichole, there's a certain motion in it. I think it's the way you drew the neck; it works well.

It must have taken a while to draw all the hair! Does she have a side or middle parting though? If it's middle then it could be a little off...

CatChewer: Her hair is always parted in a lop-sided manner, so I honestly don't remember what I was going for. x3

Caramel: Yeah, the tank does take away from it somehow, I suppose. :( Or maybe it's something else none of our eyes are noticing. Our eyes are such slackers. o_o

That's great! I love your shading and general style; and it's great to see some realism around! <3

Some of the facial features look a wee out of place towards the bottom of the face, but that could just be me being pedantic. And I'd agree about what's said about the tank top.

Even so, those things are barely noticable and it's a fabulous picture! =D

Sometimes if you leave a drawing for a few days and look back on it, you notice all these details that are off.

Okay... Whoo... that was reeeeeelly off topic.

What I think makes her look older is the line under the line defining her cheek that is to the left of her mouth (the bigger one). If that made any sense at all just but your thumb over it and see what I mean.

The shading is excellent Joey!

EpsilonZero; Monday, February 12, 2007 - 01:42

Hmm...you have lots of negative space at the top, which gives it a nice texture, but as you go down the lines blend together and it looks less realistic..I don't think there's any good way to fix it, but that my only complaint. Everything else looks very good, and it's way better than I could do.

Want to hear something

Joamette Gil; Monday, February 12, 2007 - 04:18

Want to hear something funny?

The hair wasn't like that before. An art professor (one that actually does great art herself) I had critique it told me to do it that way. The hair should be treated as a "form" rather than "a bunch of grouped up lines," she said. ;p

True, but for the form

EpsilonZero; Monday, February 12, 2007 - 05:27

True, but for the form theory to work, it has to be applied to the whole thing. Right now, it's like the bottom is a form, and the top is a texture. So....I guess you should just blur the top too? Ah hell, I'm just a self-taught hick, what do I know.^^

And, yet again, I have a texture psuedo-fetish, so I'm biased.xD

I got started on a realism

rabbitpiss; Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 06:31

I got started on a realism project. I was thinking of giving my bf a mix CD for Vday when he comes back from his camp. But then I though that was Cliche.

So I decided to fill up a school note book with anatomy sketches and portaits of myself and my family memebers and give the book to him. Cheap! And I wanted him to have something personal.

He's not really into art. Is this a good idea?
