Critiques, please!

Art Critique EpsilonZero - Sunday, March 11, 2007 - 04:40

I'm working on this action pic, and I'm wondering if the posing is alright. I really like the guy on the left, but the guy in the air looks a little off somehow...

Any anything else you notice, please let me know, I just don't want to do anything else until I know the poses are right...

Whoa, nice! i like it! Unfortunately, this is exactly what I'm bad at.

I always try flipping the image when I want to find what's off.

Considering the way the guy

David Doub; Tuesday, March 13, 2007 - 02:55

Considering the way the guy on the left has his torso twisted in a way that wouldn't give him much leverage/support to block the downward swing on the sword. Also the sword looks like it's going into his head.

The guy on the right is in a very stereotypical pose that's a bit overused.

Hope that helps some.

Both hand are holding the sword, right? So I think the sword and his hands should be positioned in the center between his legs. If this was real, he would have more power coming from his core.

Left-guy's right leg has

Joamette Gil; Tuesday, March 13, 2007 - 12:19

Left-guy's right leg has some anatomy issues: his calf muscles don't seem proportional to his other leg and his knee is completely out of place (and if that's not his knee portruding from beneath his right shorts-leg, those lines there certainly make it appear that way). The angling seems wrong, but I'm not going to claim to know how to make it right.

I agree with Iko and David as well. Right-guy doesn't seem to have any downwards momentum going, either. He seems suspended in the air rather than forcing his way down. His muscles seem too relaxed for someone doing that move; Left-guy seems more tense, which is good.

Mom mom looked at it, she sad the same thing that Joey did. The left guys leg is twisted inwards while the foot is pointed outward.

Thanks! That helps. Now that I look, all those things are true. Time to rework it, I guess.

My First Critique

petersjm; Wednesday, March 14, 2007 - 16:33

So far I agree with everything the other mps have said. No one has said anything about the sword though. The blade is perfect, however the hand grip (i forget the name of it) needs to be thicker and two handed. Falchions are two handed not one and have thick hand grips. Of course, if thats not the kind of sword your trying to make never mind. Scimitars are similar one handed swords but they have thin blades, not thick like yours. I realize of course you could be going for that whole anime guy with a ridiculous, hisotrically inaccurate sword so whatever. Still you should work on the hilt reguardless.

The sword block seems to be positioned to close to the left guys face and especially his forhead. Also, blocks are made with the flat of a blade not the edge for two reasons. The first is so that a downward slash like that just glides off of it instead of the other guys face. The other reason is so that the guy on the left can parry the sword to his right, leaving the guy on the right wide open for his attack.

Also, the hands need work. They seem to small to me. I am no artist so I have no real concept of perspective or shading but they still just look to small to me.

The left foot of the guy on the right seems wrong to me too. It should be positioned exactly like the right one...or at least close to it. I know it's not finished but it looks like we are looking at the bottom of the guys foot, not the side of it.

Lastly the right guy's vest is not angled right for someone coming down from a jump either forward or straight up. It should look more like a sail full of wind.

Hope this helps.

I think the right guys left

CatChewer; Thursday, April 12, 2007 - 06:49

I think the right guys left leg looks a little off, the way the foot is twisted outwards.

This drawing has alot of momentum in it though, and the anatomy of the arms is amazing. :D

I'm sorry for the short comment, but it was all basically covered before i got here o_O

What's under his shirt that

WaterFaerie; Tuesday, April 17, 2007 - 14:21

What's under his shirt that he's holding it for WHEN the sword is going at his head?

It's good, but think through the drawing a little.

I do like it even though it has it's faults.

Actually I agree with WaterFaerie. The sword is hard to see. Maybe try a clearer angle?

His feet.

furubafan3; Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 00:27

I was really impressed and was tempted to say something nooby but now. I think the boy who's standing on the ground has his knees a bent in an awkward position. It's not a stance I could imagine myself able to stand up in if some guy was going to pounce on me like that! I think if you had one foot bent forward and one behind it'd be more realistic.

I agree with what everyone

Reiko Kitsune; Thursday, October 18, 2007 - 20:41

I agree with what everyone else has said so far, it really is a good picture, just needs a bit of re tweaking.

Also, I don't know if its just me, but the ankle closest to the edge of the page on the guy on the ground seems off, I think maybe its because the shoes material seems to be perfectly following the contours of his foot. shoes usually have a bit more stiff appearance, unless they have suffered lots of lovin'tear. . .I really wish I had shoes that followed the flow of my foot like that.
