Review:
This is one of the rare events where you can't judge a CD by it's cover artwork or any overly-poppy singles with repetitive lyrics that may reasult from said CD.
I've been an Avril Lavinge fan since I was about nine. She was the female predecessor of 'punk' for me. She was my hero. I used to doodle the chorus of "Freak Out" all over my binder, between stick figures and unicorns. I used to play "Let Go" on continues repeat...until I listened to "Girlfriend".
I was disgusted: how could a musician responsible for converting me from pop to rock create...this? I immediatly scoffed it. Never the less, I still bought "The Best D*mn Thing", writing it off as nostalgia purposes. And it's not as bad as I thought.
Sure, it's not her best work. It's actually her worst. But it still infects your brain so you can't get the songs out of your head for a while (I've been singing "I wish you were her/You left out the "E"/You left without me" all day). Some of the songs still have her amazing songwriting, even if it's a bit more pop-ish. Read "Innocence", "When You're Gone", "Keep Holding On", and "Runaway" and you'll get what I mean. Others are o.k. "One Of Those Girls" sings about the slutty HollyWood princesses who use men and break their hearts.
But some songs are...horrific. Like "Hot". It makes me ashamed to listen to it. The lyrics are overly sexual, and "I Don't Have To Try" has the most annoying beat in the history of time. And "Girlfriend". I will not elaborate more than EW.
Overall, "The Best D*mn Thing" is good, if you skip over a few songs.
