Price: about $25.00 or €20.00
Rating: 10

Synopsis:

Though I may be wrong, I'm going to assume that this section is for films etc. So, I've decided to review one of my favourite anime films of all time, "Spirited Away". This is my first review, btw, so sorry if it's not great! Enjoy anyway...

The film's protagonist is Chihiro, a spoiled little girl who believes the world revolves around her and her every whim, so she's far from happy when her parents announce they're moving home. Exploring the new neighbourhood, the family stumble across a mysterious tunnel and, lured inside, find themselves in a ghostly town in the Spirit World, where they become seperated almost at once.

Alone and lost, Chihiro wanders a fantastical world of ancient gods and magical beings. Ruled over by the sorceress, Yubaba, this is the Spirit World, where Chihiro's life will be changed forever...

(I admit I stole most of that off the back of the DVD box, but it gets the point across.)

Review:

For me, this is just an incredible film, for many reasons. Firstly, the artwork is just incredible, as anyone familiar with studio Ghibli's art would expect. The've surpassed themselves here, though, as the art helps create a mysterious, surreal atmosphere that's absolutely in keeping with the story.

The story itself is quite simple; Chihiro's lost, she wants to save her parents (who've been turned into pigs)and get home, but she can't. She's trapped, and nothing is as it seems. That's just the basic plot, as a LOT of wierd stuff happens in this film, which is part of what makes it so great. That's beauty of this film, really, that it's so bizzarre. Just sit back and bask in 120 minutes of sheer sublime madness!

Some might say that this film doesn't have enough action, and that maybe it's too...well..whimsical. (I didn't think so... :P )I say, if you want something with action, go watch Ghost In The Shell or something. If you want a film that's stunningly beautiful, a film that makes you care deeply for the characters, a film that makes you think, or a film that leaves you sitting there thinking "wow...", then this is the film for you.

I'm so glad to see the first

Anime Punk Joey; Sunday, April 8, 2007 - 18:49

I'm so glad to see the first anime review up on MP, and this definitely is a fantastic movie. Just don't get used to using abbreviations like "btw" in your reviews. ;)

And, um, on a side note... that's a nice icon you've got there. ;p

Spirited Away is what made

Crayola; Tuesday, April 10, 2007 - 20:31

Spirited Away is what made me fall in love with manga (even if my 8-year-old-self didn't know it). Amazing movie, everyone should see it.

Spirited Away is a beautiful

killijoy; Friday, April 13, 2007 - 23:52

Spirited Away is a beautiful piece of animated cinematography. The story is truly beautiful. Truly. I love the way you come to care for the characters, and truly want the good ones to suceed and the bad ones to fail. But the most beautiful thing is, there is no real definition as to who's bad and who's good. That's because each of the characters, while set in a fantasy setting, is basically human, each with their own faults, moods, thoughts and actions.

Miyazaki has created a classic that will be watched time and time again.

Miyazaki doesn't seperate

Anime Punk Joey; Saturday, April 14, 2007 - 04:54

Miyazaki doesn't seperate the good from the evil in any of his films; it's one of the things I like most about his work.

I think the fact that he

Vikingr; Sunday, April 15, 2007 - 12:03

I think the fact that he doesn't delineate between good and evil adds a lot of realism to his storys. That might be an odd thing to say about fantasy, but it really doesn't matter how many demons, spirits, dragons or unicorns you put into something, if the characters are solid, credible beings, it'll have realism which improves it vastly. Contrariwise, even if you write a "real-life" story set in, say, Detroit, it'll still feel horribly fake if the characters are bland stereotypes...
