Synopsis:
Finney Bleak lives in a world of horror- literally. His family members are ghosts, his classmates are monsters, and Finney is the most normal kid in school. But within the halls of Mephisto Prep, normal is the new wierd and Finney dangles from the lowest rung of the evolutionary lader.
Then along comes Jenny. Smart. Beautiful. And totally into Fineey. only problem is, she's kind of dead. Just how far will Finney go to be with his true love? Let's just say not even Death can stand in his way.
Review:
Wow! This is so funny- like laugh out loud in the middle of a library and not care that people are staring funny. It's amusing partly because you know it shouldn't be funny (where's the humour in being eaten by a shark?) and partly because of the sarastic comments made by the main character, Finney; there is nothing like a well timed "Perfect" in a time of crisis. Oh yeah and the wierd factor.
Aside from the jokes there is the story itself- which is tad predictable as it's written on the back of the book and not really expanded on in this volume and because it's the perfect "boy meets girl" during high school set up. Jenny (the dead girlfriend) is a really good character because she manages to appear the perfect girl for Finney, without being ditzy or bland.
Plus the art is great! Really different from the type of thing I normally go for (magical quests, princesses with super powers and the like) I really like the bold black outlines and rather square edges.
The only real downside that I found was the dream sequence; for some reason it gets on my nerves when random dreams are chucked into plots to either pad them out or add the element of danger that may be laking. But for some reason I'm happy to let this manga get away with it.
All in all it's witty, relatable and a little morbid. I really would recomend it to everyone.
