Synopsis:
Daisuke Niwa is an ordinary middle school student with an extraordinary genetic "condition." Whenever he starts longing for the girl of his dreams, he transforms into the legendary Phantom Thief, Dark! The only way to have him lift his curse? To have his love returned, of course. But how can Daisuke win the heart of a girl he can't even romance?
Review:
OK, this is one of the girly mangas, bar none. I mean, there's romance, there's hot guys at every turn, there's a bad boy, there's a good boy (for all you boring types out there). However, every guy I've forced to read it says they love it too.
Perhaps it's the whole danger thing - Satoshi after Dark/Daisuke - and he knows the secret. Perhaps it's the real-life-like rollar coaster ride of feelings. Perhaps we like the fact that Dark is doing something that thousands of people find immoral and dangerous (stealing rare and priceless artifacts). But maybe it's just the magick it creates.
Daisuke is your average Joe Schmo kid - he's not particularly gifted in the smarts and looks departments, and he's not clever, cute, funny, smart - all those things girls would want. However, he has a good heart, and you can feel for him and believe that he just wants a break. He's friends with Satoshi (whom Dark is rivals with). He likes Risa, who doesn't like him, because he's just the average Joe Schmo.....The list goes on that makes Daisuke loveable, and more importantly, believeable.
Sugisaki creates believable characters/backgrounds, and he takes you on a rollar coaster of emotions, and events. The book never takes itself too seriously, though, and never let's you stop to say, "Dark so did not do that!"
