Synopsis:
Toxic Shock Comics is the new book on the indie scene by Mike Storniolo, Nick Clark & Zach Russell. Between the high school hijinx, ninja fights, herb slinging and arguing lies a book of epic proportions with a not-so-epic projection. The Kind Budz, The Subcultural Syndicate, kung-foo monkeys, killer lawn gnomes, a kick to the face and a punch to the funny bone.
Review:
This made me laugh out loud. If a comic can do that, it's already on the right track. That's about the whole gist of what I can say about Toxic Shock Comics: they're on the right track.
These artists, of course, still have a long road ahead of them. While the writing is both witty and original, but the visuals still need a lot work. Issues with anatomy and perspective abound in this comic while backgrounds, quite plainly, do not. Thankfully, the drawings are good enough to be intelligible and to convey a style unique to the creators.
Despite its typos and sometimes awkward word-balloon flow, I liked that the book was entirely without pretention: the creators knew their flaws and incorporated them into the humor, which worked out pretty nicely. Also, my all-time favorite comic book character makes an unexpected cameo in one of the comic shorts, which I can honestly say gives them brownie points.
Toxic Shock Comics Issue #1 gets a 6 out of 10 for not living up to its greatest potential but for being an enjoyable, entertaining read nonetheless.
Note: The book contains much profanity--hide it from your Catholic mothers.
