Gender imbalances

Vikingr's picture
Vikingr - Thursday, January 17, 2008 - 14:49

We all know that Mangapunk was concieved mainly for girls. What I'd like to know is:

Firstly, was there any particular reason for focusing on female manga lovers?

Secondly, there are still quite a number of guys who use the site. Any idea how many? P'raps we could do a poll on it, even if just to satisfy my curiosuty...

There was a particular

Anime Punk Joey; Friday, January 18, 2008 - 05:53

There was a particular reason actually, and it ties in to the fact that this site is NOT for manga lovers.

*GASP-SHOCK-SURPRISE*

"Manga Punk" is in fact an official trademark, a brand name. MP is a publishing company. Due to many complications and factors, however, Rachel's books are the only ones that have been published under this name as of yet.

It was actually intended for girls who were inspired by manga to become comic artists themselves. It wasn't about copying manga or making Ameri-manga or even about manga vs. American comics - it was about women, period. It was about the fact that women are so involved in the Japanese comics industry while comics are still considered a "boy thing" in the United States. Manga did a lot to start making comics a "girl thing" as well here in America.

A "Manga Punk" is an woman who challenges the status quo of comics and is heavily (or even just partly) influenced to do so by this simple idea: if Japan can do it, why not us?

As you can see, of course, the MangaPunk.com you all know and love today has grown significantly more inclusive since then. =)

By my count, there have been about 11 highly active (meaning they posted often and were well-known amongst the boarders) males in the 4-year history of MangaPunk.com. At the moment we have 6: you, David, Quamp, xXRed13Xx, Plant, and DreamingSoul. Sinn was also pretty active up until about July of 2007, and ScaledawG had a recent bout of re-activity around the Christmas season. I may have forgotten someone...

...or I may be completely missing the fact that someone else around here is actually a male. >_>

Wow.

That was very informative. I agree that there is an imbalance but...if you consider how many active (using Joey's definiton of active) girls there are compared to actives boys...well, i've always felt there was a balance.

Sorry, alvischain! I can't exactly count you as "highly active" yet... you just got here after all. ^_^*

I look forward to having you become one of our beloved testosterone bags, though! <3

I think the idea of a Pole sounds neat for that infromation, like.. "see whos dominating the site now." XP

And oh yea, I need to mention.. That even though I am a girl the majority of the manga that I read is "boy type". And I am working on one as we speak. ^-^

Hey that is realy interesting, I like that idea alot, and yes! Every time my friends and I are reading our manga peacefully in school there is always someone who has to challenge that fact and ask tons of questions as if they have never seen a girl reading a comic.. At any rate thank you Joey, your comment has made my day.

Dungionman 3; Thursday, January 24, 2008 - 17:33

Well I always felt it was meant for women, but I never thought it was for a PUBLISHING COMPANY! I thought it was a website for the women to talk about manga and other, less manga-y things as well, us gals need more ridiculous girly websites!
