Ash, that's exactly what I

killijoy; Monday, December 3, 2007 - 15:19

Ash, that's exactly what I would say if I was trying to hook you. XDDD Thank god I don't think of my online friends that way? Also, glad to know the way I do things is unusual. It must be a Yankee thing to do.

And 'lilbit', dear, if you are looking for friends on a comics site, why don't you try to first clean up the typing? Chatspeak is really hard to read, and nobody wants to be friends with someone they can't write to on a basic, kindergarten level. Also, you must have a reason for being on Mangapunk. Are you a writer or an artist? What comics do you like? Any particular anime?

If you're stumped for any of those answers, you might just want to delete your account, because you are garanteed not to fit in here, and I'd personally like to save you all the grief that a lot of people are going to put you through if you treat this like Myspace, myself included.

I'm really serious

Plant; Wednesday, December 5, 2007 - 03:28

love, darl, ma'am, sir, mate (to a stranger), all those terms are considered condesending by most people. It's ok coming from an old woman or something, but if you called any of the girls I knew "dear" they'd slap you to the ground (half the girls I know are looking for someone to slap anyway)

xXRed13Xx; Wednesday, December 5, 2007 - 11:48

Maybe you should hang around with some less violent people :S

Everyone in England basically calls everyone else "mate", and plenty of people say things like love and dear (normally old people) and I don't think "Your being condescending!!!" I think "Hehe you call people sweetheart, dear, love or whatever... your weird!"

Unless you were talkin to some chav or pikey who was already looking for a fight, I'm 99% sure you could call someone dear without worrying about getting decked.

Awww, poor Red, we heart you. I'm sorry, but you're illegal for me, dear. And if you find that condescending, I give you permission to slap me.

I type like I talk, and as I said before Plant, if you find it CONDESCENDING, I've taken that into consideration, and it won't be directed at you. Otherwise, get over it. It is obviously YOUR opinion, and I have a lot of opinions on the things you do too, such as not letting this topic go and getting over it, but I don't make such a big deal about.

And I'm fifteen, not fourteen. True, not much of a difference, but it's one more step to that little old lady you are JONESING for me to turn into.

To be honest

xXRed13Xx; Wednesday, December 5, 2007 - 23:38

To be honest plant, I don't think it's people that find it condescending I think it's you? I don't know anyone who would be offended by being called dear or love.
We have 2 girls working at my store who talk in a very cockney voice, and they always call people love and dear (they are late teens, early 20s), no one finds it offensive or condescending it's just the way they talk.

Aww hehe, I heart you too Killi :) and don't worry I can wait a year *dodgy wink* ;)
And don't worry there will be no slapping.

Also, it's not just me, a friend quit her job because she couldn't stand the supervisor calling everybody "darl", it has been on 2 of Australia's so called "current affairs" programs and one time in english last year we had a big conversation about it.

Wow. I am so peeved by this

Joamette Gil; Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - 02:17

Wow. I am so peeved by this thread.

Number One:

lilbit22 wrote:
well sorry for the inconvinience i was just postn some random crap cuz i didnt know what to write so whatev ok

First of all, please try to type in proper English - it's a rule on the site. Furthermore, what you posted wasn't an inconvenience. You seemed to be confused as to what the purpose of this site was, so I directed you to one that seemed to suit you more. Forgive me for being as curt as I was; just know that you are more than welcome to be here. Just know where you are - it helps in starting conversation. :)

Number Two:

Killijoy wrote:
That, Plant, is how I talk to people. If you have problem with it, get over it, LOVE. I say that too, unless you find that condescending too? Because the way you said that was CONDESCENDING to me.

Sarcasm not included.

Killijoy - my love - your rudeness has surprised me. Not only did you react very insensitively to Plant's opinion (which he stated in a very civilized manner), but you made a point of it to rub the term "love" in his face after he just specifically stated his views on its (very real) negative connotations. Yes, you have every right to use those terms. Plant didn't tell you not to. He simply stated a fact: some people are can be offended by it.

Yes, Ash, there are people on this planet who are offended when someone calls them love, dear, sweetheart, etc. No one here has performed any viable, legitimate statistical research to back up any claims about "everyone" or "no one;" we can only speak based on what we have observed while avoiding gross generalizations.

Am I saying it's logical to be offended by traditional terms of endearment? No. But it's true that some people are, just as it's true that some people do intend them to be offensive when they say them.

Hell, "dear" is often the word I employ when I feel a smidgen of sympathy or pity (to which many people take offense) towards the person I'm addressing. Furthermore, I have been addressed as "sweetheart" and "dear" by men who were rather obviously (given the context) trying to establish their own chauvinistic dominance over me. Sometimes people replace words such as "lousy mother-$%#@er" with "darling" or "sweety" for the sake of keeping their mouths clean.

Ash, Kill, if you guys live in parts of the world free of this form of doublespeak, congratulations.

But once we know for a fact that a certain individual dislikes being called a certain name (no matter how harmless we may find it) it is only common courtesy to refrain from doing so.

That being said, the vast majority of the time, I address people by any one term of endearment as a sign of friendliness and/or genuine affection. If anyone dislikes my calling them something or other, speak up so that I can stop.

Number Three:

Not necessarily directed only at Killijoy, but I'm simply puzzled as to why certain people felt the need to come in here simply to repeat what I had already said to lilbit22. This isn't meant to sound mean; I'm just honestly confused because it makes so little sense. If anything, all the repetitiveness did was make this thread grow to such a size as to make it seem that we were picking on lilbit22.

xXRed13Xx's picture

Sorry

xXRed13Xx; Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - 07:07

Sorry the thread peeves you so much Jo, I'll try not to be so sarcastic and jokey for a bit :(

But I just don't think people should be offended by being called "love" or "dear", and if I see no reason to be offended by something, then unless the person can give a convincing reason that persuades me that there is cause to be offended, then I find it hard to accept.
Ofcourse if someone says these things in a condescending manner then it could be offensive, but for most people it is just part of the way they talk and I don't think anyone has a right to be offended by that.
Like people around here will naturally just add "mate" onto the end of a sentance when addressing complete strangers. And for thm to then say "I am not your mate, I don't know you therefore I am offended by that" (or something to that affect) I think is just stupid.
Words are only offensive if you associate them with offence, so if someone says something in a tone or manner that is not meant to cause offence in anyway and you take offence to it, then I feel that is your hangup not theirs.

Plant; Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - 07:31

If my little brother had come up to you 3 years ago when he thought he was black and said something like "whadup mi homie, who dem b*ches you be rollin with?" you and the girls you were with couldn't possibly take offence because he didn't mean for you to?

Well

xXRed13Xx; Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - 16:38

Well to be honest that is slightly different I think, because b*tch is actually a derogatory term and widely known swear word.

But it would depend completely on how he said it, if he seemed to be acting perfectly friendly and was using it like "Yo yo b*tches, wassup?" rather than "The girls you are with are a bunch of b*tches!" then it would be fine, I would probably start laughing...

And as for the girls, well I can't speak for them because they are not me (plus they are fictional) but if he said it in a completely non offensive manner then I think it would be fine.

I have walked into a room and said "Alright b*tches" and "Alright jack*ss how you doin?" and I say it in a non offensive manner therefore it's fine. If I said "Oi you b*tch, your a f*cking jack*ss" in a completely serious tone then it would sound offensive.

Okay, this is wrong to say

WaterFaerie; Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - 20:17

Okay, this is wrong to say but this thread is funny as hell.

My opinion is that if you know the person you can call them "dear" or "love" because hence, YOU KNOW THEM. And if they take offense for that than there is something wrong. But of course, if it is someone I don't know it is a bit disturbing. Like I had a teacher call me that and I was like, "WHAT?! Have I met you before or something?".

I don't think Red was being snarky. I could see he was joking. I find it funny too that someone would send such a random letter asking to be friends, especially since from the thread, I am guessing Red does not know lilbit22.

I'm not even going to get

Joamette Gil; Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - 20:44

I'm not even going to get into how racist that was.

Plant: Properly edit your post to censor "b*tches."

Ash: Whether or not it makes sense to you or anybody else for someone to be offended by anything you decide to call them is not the point. The point is that when someone lets you know that they do not want to be called something, it would be nice if you didn't do it. No one is perfect - everyone has hang-ups. Be sensitive to them. That's all I ask of any of you.

At least on this message board. Do whatever the hell you like elsewhere.

But

xXRed13Xx; Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - 21:06

But Plant wasn't saying "Killi, you called me dear and I am offended please don't call me that again."
He was saying "You know most people find terms such as "dear" condesending and even offensive."
Which I just don't think is true.

And the point I am making is that not everyone conciously says dear or love, it is just part of the way they speak... almost like an accent.

Obviously if I used words like dear and love and Plant said I don't like that, then I would try my best not to do it (admittedly it's easier to do so online than in real life.) But I don't think people should be FORCED to make an effort to change the way they naturally speak to make someone else happy.
If they wish they can try not to use these words out of courtesy for the other person, but I still think it is their hangup not the person speaking's.
