Character Bio: main character

Amilcar Cabral Smith

Amilcar Cabral Smith doesn’t have any memories of his life younger than four. He can’t sleep by himself or he’ll have terrible nightmares all night and wake up exhausted. From the age of four to seven he lived in an orphanage in Atlanta, where he was constantly ridiculed and beat up because of his name and inability to sleep alone. When he was seven he was adopted by a twenty six year old single woman who wanted kids but thought having one of her own would slow down her career. The woman Rosemary Patrice Brown also adopted a five year old girl named Li Mei Sun.

Thanks to Rosemary’s good job and wealthy family Amilcar was able to enjoy a long period of happiness in his life. He studied tae kwon do at a local YMCA, received excellent grades in school and started learning about Chinese history with his adopted sister making them very close. He did most of the household chores including laundry cooking and cleaning because of his mothers long work hours, but he was always happy to help. They would soon find out the period of tranquility wasn’t built to last however.

When Amilcar was fifteen his adopted mother married a man who she had been dating named Leroy Jonathon Williams. For the first 8 months everything seemed to go well, but after a while Leroy started to yell at Rosemary often. Not to long after that he began to beat Amilcar for making small mistakes. Amilcar tried to talk to Rosemary about Leroy’s beatings and yelling many times, but she insisted everything would be fine. Amilcar’s grades in school began to fall from the pressure at home and while his grades dropped Leroy began to beat him more to try to “encourage” him to work harder. Things spiraled farther out of hand at home when Leroy started to argue that Amilcar needed to be sent to a boarding school so he could concentrate on getting better grades, when Rosemary disagreed Leroy slapped her in plain view of Amilcar.

The next day Leroy told Rosemary to take Amilcar out for a while and explain to him that if he doesn’t do better in school he will haft to go to a boarding school. The conversation didn’t last long however because Amilcar simply stated he didn’t care and walked home. Amilcar went into the house and tiptoed past his stepfather’s room to him in his sister’s room. He pushed the door open and was shocked to see his sister half naked crying with a washcloth shoved in her mouth while Leroy struggled to hold her down and take of the rest of her clothing.

He stood in shock for a split second while he figured out what was happening, but then he kicked Leroy in the back of the head as hard as he could. Leroy seemed momentarily dazed so Amilcar grabbed his sister and told her to run outside. At the same time he ran to the kitchen so he could call the police on the house phone. By the time Amilcar got into the kitchen Leroy had already started to chase him. Leroy grabbed Amilcar from behind and started to choke him, which Amilcar responded to by elbowing him multiple times in the gut. Leroy eventually stopped choking him and threw him into the kitchen counter. Leroy then picked up a large cast iron frying pan and tried to bash Amilcar in the face. Amilcar blocked the frying pan with his right arm. While the pan made impact he felt his arm fall limp to his side. Amilcar franticly searched for something to fight back with, his hands wrapped around the hilt of a bunmei sushi knife. Amilcar slashed blindly at Leroy multiple times until he could feel blood running down his arms from the blade. Amilcar got up to find Leroy lying in blood clutching a deep wound on his throat.

The next time Amilcar saw his sister or mother again was from a holding cell three weeks later. He was found guilty later that day and sentenced to three years in a juvenile detention center. He was also prescribed daily therapy. He wrote his sister every week while in prison. He tried his best to behave in prison and do well in therapy. His hard work allowed him to get on parole after 2 years. He was given 1 year of intense parole and if he didn’t violate he would be allowed to continue his life.

When Amilcar left the prison the first place he went was to his sister’s school. Even though he had to wait outside for three hours until her classes were over just knowing he would see her again made it seem worth it. When she spotted him outside she ran over to him dropped her bag and jumped into his arms. She cried for about 15 minutes then they started to walk to his mother’s house. She caught him up on everything that was going on in her life. Even though she was talking to fast to understand he was still more then happy just to here her voice.

After working out living arrangements with his mother Amilcar started looking for a job, a search that took much longer than he thought it would. Even though he had earned a GED while in jail, no one wanted to hire him. Every workplace he went to told him to leave because he would steal there things, but Amilcar also new that if he didn’t get a job soon he would violate his parole and possibly go back to jail. He eventually lucked up on a janitor job at a small gym. It was there that he also started to learn the martial art Mauy Thai. He loved the powerful attacks and tight defenses of Mauy Thai and studied diligently.

One year later when his parole was up Amilcar decided to move to Vegas and try to break into the professional fighting scene. He knew how hard it was for an ex convict to get a job and thought fighting would be the best way for him to make money. He got a one room apartment with three other aspiring fighters and started his amateur career.
