Sequential Art, yo!

Joamette Gil's picture
Joamette Gil - Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 21:36

Hey guys! I was going to put this in the Art Critique forum, but I'm putting it here because I don't really care whether or not any constructive criticism is offered (it's always welcome of course!) but rather wanted to share it with you guys as I'm pretty proud of it. =)

It's called "Telephone Game," which is basically another name for "Chinese Whisper," that game where a statement gets passed around the room and it changes by the time it gets to the last person. It's all fuzzy because it was photographed, not scanned.

By the way, since I have a mac now, I can't tell whether or not this image is screwing up the page for anyone; if it is, let me know so that I may fix the problem. ;)

I really love the color

Hairballed Kat; Friday, January 11, 2008 - 00:32

I really love the color transitions and the outfits and the shading and *pantpant* everyone's gestures. It may just be a matter of taste, but the facial features don't always go over well with me -- actually, I'm really jealous of your perfect mouths and noses, but the eyes seem a little... I dunno, strange. Maybe the irises are too small?

In any case, yaaay Joey! ^-^

I like it! Typically fine

Vikingr; Friday, January 11, 2008 - 19:50

I like it! Typically fine drawing, nice little twist at the end. Who needs words to tell a story?! Having the last frame in monochrome is a nice touch, too. I'm curious to find out what you used for colouring, though? That's the only thing that doesn't sit too well with me... I'm not too sure why, but I suspect your art loses some of the detail in the colouring. Great drawing in any case; 9 stars!

Thanks, Kattiness! =D

My favorite outfit from the bunch is the one the blushing girl is wearing. Her's is the least minimalistic.

I think I get what you're saying about the eyes; every eye is colorless. I was focussing more on the eyes' shapes since the emphasis here is on personality and emotion. Also, I've been noticeably straying away from eye detail in favor facial detail; I believe I was relying too much on hairstyle and eye type to distinguish my character designs from one another. In this way I guess I've been "de-manga-fying" my style. Slightly. ;p

Thanks a lot, Aong! ^_^

Joamette Gil; Friday, January 11, 2008 - 20:05

Thanks a lot, Aong! ^_^

A little note though: monochrome means "one color," which is not what's going on in the last frame. The proper adjective would be achromatic, which means there is no color (as black and white are considered non-colors).

I wanted the colors to become more powerful as the emotions became more powerful (yellow being the most subdued and red being the strongest on the color wheel). The guy who offs himself would have been the point at which the circle came back 'round again, back to yellow, which is appropriate for someone who loses something like the will to live. I wanted to represent that total sense of loss by the total loss of color.

Ah, but enough of that. xD

I used watercolor pencils. It was my first time playing with them, so I'm not too happy with the coloring job. There wasn't really too much detail to lose, honestly, since all of these were simple line art beforehand - no shading, no hatching, nada. If anything, they're more detailed with the color. =)

I am so VERY happy you like it, of course! <33

But i always feel anything

Vikingr; Tuesday, January 15, 2008 - 22:55

But i always feel anything coloured with pencils looks kinda... scribbly... :P
Thanks for the definitions, btw, but then why are black and white photos called monochrome? Ignorance?
Lotta thought went into the colouribg though, and it shows. Nice stuff!

Joamette Gil; Friday, January 18, 2008 - 04:45

Ignorance, or perhaps a difference in perspective. As far as the Western European and North American cultures are concerned, black and white are not colors. They are considered colors in countries such as India and China.

The logic behind the Western definitions just makes sense to me *shrug* :P

AWWWWW That is sooo sad!!

Kurenai Ichi; Monday, January 21, 2008 - 22:45

AWWWWW That is sooo sad!! NOOOOOO!!! TT.TT

Aww that worked really well, I felt the intensity flowing perfectly, I love it, even with emotion of love shown as is known that love is of the strongest emotion besides a killing, which is I beleive the ultimate display of emotion! This must have been well thought out, you definately deserve an icon for this.. I wonder if it will let me do it..

And yes it makes the page two inches too big.
