JOEY NEEDS *YOU!*

Joamette Gil's picture
Joamette Gil - Saturday, February 9, 2008 - 01:02

Greetings my lovelies! I need as many of you as possible to read the following:

I'm going to attempt to create a full-length comic book for my final project in my color theory course. I've got four weeks to draw, ink, color, prep, and bind 24 pages worth of comic.

But I'm going to need your help!

I'm going to be updating this blog frequently over the next few weeks with progress reports and sample images. I would very much love it if everyone could participate actively in critiquing my art as I post it up to make sure I make the best sequential artwork I can possibly make within the time frame (it's already been written, so the story itself is not up for debate ;p). You guys are great at catching things, so I know this is the right place to choose! :)

Joamette Gil; Saturday, February 16, 2008 - 20:35

That's pretty much what's gone on so far, but I'm going to have to step up my pace significantly: these pages need to be partially achromatic and partially colored. Plus I need to print it.

By the way, I should be posting what I've got so far up tomorrow! Thanks for responding, you guys!

Joamette Gil; Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - 21:09

Alright, guys. I'm having issues with the scanners on campus, so upload the pages is going to take a little longer than I expected. Here are a couple of samples, though, just to give you guys an idea of the general style. They're really bad quality because I had to rape them with auto-contrast to make the blue linework visible online (the originals are NOT dirty, as these appear to be :P). Also, only sections of them were scanned for use in a design project I was working on, which would explain the printer issue: the damn things are too small! =/

Ren-chancrusade; Wednesday, February 20, 2008 - 20:09

I like two page a lot and I hope your not adding words to it because it really captures the kid's emotions.

Page five is a little to blurry, but it might just be the scan. I also don't really get whats going on in it however, that might be because I haven't seen the prior pages.

Joamette Gil; Thursday, February 21, 2008 - 00:53

Thanks for the comments, Ren!

I don't remember if I mentioned it earlier or not, but this entire comic is going to be done without words. Just straight-up pictures telling a story.

And yeah, page 5 would make a helluva lot more sense if you could see the prior ones (ah, and it's all blurry because of an effect I was messin' around with... and silly Joey clicked on "Save" instead of "Save As" ...so ashamed...). He's basically a class show-off. After going to school and being his usual know-it-all self, the teacher starts passing back they're exam papers. He gets an A and decides to brag to the girl behind him about it; she simply flips him off.

That is so good! Go, Joey, go!!

It portrays emotions and actions perfectly. I can't really tell if anything needs to be fixed, though, because it's all blurry on my end. Otherwise, I enjoy and understand the story thus far.

Good luck!

EirinoYuki; Monday, February 25, 2008 - 20:09

on page five I don't think you really need the three box's of the hand putting or picking up the paper. One would be good. To give the idea or put anther hand to give more of the idea that he or she is handing it off to the guy.

If your trying to give the idea that hes handing off the paper to the teacher do one box him handing it to him and the second box same but with the letter grade on the paper you can do that with out having to use three box's which make it to long.

but thats my option on that really its the only thing that is really bothering me the most.

other then that work hard! *little guts*

Joamette Gil; Saturday, March 1, 2008 - 01:28

Still having issues with the scanner, guys. Just thought I'd let you know what's up: I'm currently penciling page 16 of 24, and 3 of the other 15 have been inked (on a day when I was in an inking as opposed to a drawing mood). I have 1 week left - gotta step up the pace!

Update

Joamette Gil; Tuesday, March 4, 2008 - 07:46

After making some cuts here and there (mostly just panels that weren't entirely necessary), the story is now 21 pages long as opposed to 24.

All 21 have been penciled.

Page 4 of 21 is currently being inked.

I have 3 days left (plus homework to do).

Wish me luck (I'm going to need it)!!

Thats why its always good to do like small page layouts before draw out the large sizes. so you can see the layout cut out whats not need and see if you need to add more of make boxes bigger so you can make more pages or less. you can check out the draft I did on "Kurenai Ichi Untitled - Manga- Love/ Horror/ Fantasy" its really only for you to understand whats needed or not. some are really detailed and others are very simple.

I saw those already - I think you did a really good job! Anyway, I appreciate the advice, but that's is what I always do when planning a comic. The cuts were made to the thumnbnails, not pages I'd already taken the time to draw only to realize it was too much. I'm certainly not new to this game. ;)

Joamette Gil; Wednesday, March 12, 2008 - 20:13

Alright, here's the deal.

All 21 pages have been penciled AND inked. The coloring has only just begun. Due to time issues, I was forced to present my comic to the class before it was finished; but even so I received outstanding marks simply for how well conceived it was and how much the whole class enjoyed it (score).

That being said, I'm torn between doing two things: 1) continuing the coloring at a more leisurely pace now that the course deadline isn't an issue or 2) make a commitment to color 1 page every week for the next 6 months or so and post each page up as a weekly comic as I go along.

Comments? Suggestions?
