"...not your average comics/anime site..."
I (Rachel Nabors) founded Manga Punk way back in December of 2002. Originally, MP was just another portfolio site, but then I realized that the manga-inspired artisan community really didn't need another self-absorbed portfolio site. What all the new manga-influenced artists cropping up in America needed, what I needed, was a place to belong. A place to share information, links, concepts, tutorials. A community where we could learn the zen of self-publishing. It seemed like everyone was just floating around manga, art and comic sites, where they didn't always fit in. There was no site that really tried to help them understand this confusing world of digital screen tones and publishers. No site that focused solely on the changes occurring in this generation of comic creators, the changes brought about by Japanese comics i.e. the Manga Revolution.
Hence, I stashed all of my comics and art at Subculture of One and made Manga Punk a community site. It hasn't always been the prettiest of sites. Once it was maintained completely by hand, but now it is far more user-friendly, operating like a huge blog. Manga Punk made numerous friends along the way, many of whom now contribute to the site.
"...a digital tribe..."
Over the years, Manga Punk has become a sort of online tribe of young, female comickers (with the occasional male who could weather our feminine habits). Everybody knows each other, but new faces are welcomed with gusto. If somebody has a problem, be it trouble in paradise or a faulty scanner, it's everbody's business. For that reason, forum trolls don't last long here, and people with bad attitudes usually can't stomach our group hugs long enough to cause trouble.
But, we're not all sugar and spice. We have our own opinions, and many a discussion has become heated. However, we are all manga punks here, and we know the unspoken Code of Honor and how to respect one another's opinions. Simply put, if you act like a silly immature brat, people will tune you out, and you won't last long here. If you say what you mean in a mature manner, you will be heard.
"...a girl-friendly site..."
This site is pretty much overrun with girls. Guys are welcome here, and we have male mods and such. However, the estrogen definitely outweighs the testosterone. You can imagine that young men are always on their best behavior here (or else).
Manga Punk is not...
"...another elitist art site..."
We don't do the gallery thing here. Comics are about telling stories, not showing off nifty pinups. You want to flaunt your talent? Go to Deviant Art, a great community for stashing your art and getting feedback. Be warned: You're not going to learn the difference between copyrights and trademarks or how to properly color a cover for print there. If you're an artist with a scanner and no site, you should get a page there and link to it from your profile here.
In the future we hope to let users post comics, because that's what we do here: make comics and try to improve our storytelling. But, don't ask for image galleries. You won't get them. We can't do better than Deviant Art, and we're not going to try.
